My friend had an old wallet that had fallen apart from usage/age and asked if I could make a replacement. Here is the result. Used thin veg tan inside and sheepskin on the outside. I was not happy with the results because the sheepskin seemed too soft/flimsy and puckered up in a couple of areas of the stitch line. I used 6mm Ritza thread and a 2.7mm pricking iron for the stitching - looks like it works out to @10 SPI . I figured this would be a good project to practice my stitching. Each pocket will hold two credit cards and the money clip inside was removed from his old wallet and reused. I sealed the wallet with a mixture I made that contains beeswax, lanolin, neatsfoot oil and a bit of carnuba wax. I rub the mixture in, heat it a bit to soak in the leather, then buff with a clean rag. This is my first attempt at a wallet and I look forward to making another one to learn from these mistakes. I will appreciate any critique and suggestions for my next attempt! I really enjoy reading all the great information provided by the other members of this site and I hope I can add my own tips as I improve.

These are my projects, very new to this. 4 months in. Guitar strap for my 12 year old cousin DW. I used a ready strap and just tooled it. She is learning guitar, I am learning to let my paint dry before adding clear... wallets are the 3rd and 4th things I've ever made. I think I like the interior that is empty best. and the FIALA tooling is for a duck call neck strap. first attempt at tooling. I know now that I want a sewing machine and better quality leather.

I have a small wallet company with a wallet design that lends itself well to custom embroidery. I would like to find an individual or company that would be interested in partnering with me to provide customized products. If you or someone you know might be interested, please let me know!

Bought a bag for rements from tandy which I had forgotten about, then stumbled across them while cleaning my work area up, amazing what you find when you clean up a disaster area lol. Anyways this is a white veg tanned embossed cow leather and misson pigskin that I found as well. All hand stitched, this came out rather nice I think, can't make up my mind if I want to use a dark edge paint on it or not. more pics here http://imgur.com/gallery/Wrlwe

Gator Skin Wallet
Chief31794 posted a topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Genuine Gator (still has the hunting tag attached to the skins). Whoever tanned and finished this material did a great job, most of it is usable and feels like butter, cuts well and really easy to work with. I have 4 skins in the shop and three are like this one, the other not so much, stiff, hard to cut, very little usable. A good tannery/finisher is imperative for working with this stuff. Interior is glazed pigskin, and a faille cloth liner on the wallet back. Chief -
I have had this camo pattern printed on leather that I got from Springfield for a while, decided to make some items from it. It is a really nice leather 4/5 oz and very soft. Inside is hand made from Mission Grain Pigskin. Also I posted this because many people think that all I know how to do is Mexican Basket Weave lacing. This is more "old school" double loop lacing. Can someone explain to me how this is done? I was wanting to do card slots like this for a wallet that I am making, but couldn't figure out, so I went on etsy to see if it was even possible and found a good example, but still can't figure it out. How do the cards in the higher slots not fall to the bottom? I am confused.

Hi, I have a relatively simple leatherworking job that I'm looking to offer to someone either in/near Norfolk, Virginia, or Portland, Oregon (I live in VA, but the majority of my business is located in OR). I have a straightforward wallet design that I need someone to construct. I'm considering two methods of manufacture. 1) Having the leather laser-cut (including stitch holes) and then hand sewn. 2) Having the wallets die-cut and sewn by machine. Either way, the requirements will be relatively basic. If you live in or near Virginia or Oregon, and have an interest in this work, please let me know by personal message. Further, if you have contact information for someone or some business that may be interested in this work, please forward it to me. FYI, this job probably will not begin for the next few months, but I'm trying to get things in order now. Also, I'm currently at sea with the US Navy, so my response time may be delayed. Thanks!

Hello, i recently bought a new leather wallet and it didn't last 3 days intact. It got damaged in my pocket somehow and when i saw it i thought that it might be a stain, so i tried to clean it off with a cotton swab, but it got even worse as some of the dye at that spot came off. Now the spot is really noticeable and it has a few minor scratches around it. Generally, it seems that the skin is very delicate and easy to scratch. Now, what i want to ask is whether i should try to dye it or not even bother? Will i be able to find a sufficiently similar color? How should i do the dying? It's not really about the wallet, but i am afraid that even if i buy another, the same will happen again.

Hello all! I am looking for an experienced leather crafts person or company to help me to make a leather wallet for production purposes. I already have the design and have an initial proof of concept prototype made. Now I need it to take it to the next level and to make a prototype which is good enough to take into production. I am looking for someone who has experience making leather goods prototypes for established companies. The work involved would include assisting in selecting type of leathers, cloths and accessories, help in determining stitching and cutting details etc, determining final sizing of all elements. The goal is to make a fully refined product which I can take it to production. There may be several iterations and variations. The person or company would be required to sign a NDA before proceeding. Please contact me if you are interested and we can discuss what your charges are. I am based in Singapore but am fine to work with anyone from any country. The key for me is to find someone with the right experience. If you also know of a company or person that does this type thing, I would be glad if you can point me to them. Thank you for reading this.

Looking for Alligator leather worker for high end wallets/phone cases

Hello, I am seeking a capable craftsman to make high quality alligator leather phone case wallets to sell at my high end retail location in Los Angeles. -
Passport Wallet made from Hermann Oak (c) 4/5 oz leather, glazed pigskin pockets (5 credit card/ID slots and two currency storage areas) and a faille cloth liner. Since Passports have RFID chips embedded in the back cover and the information can be stolen this wallet has a RFID Shield embedded between the outer leather and the liner, this prevents ID theft. Got a new hide that I have never worked with from tandy called a Montana side, along with a bit of sheep skin, which again haven't worked with this either so figured a simple bi fold wallet would give me a bit of a feel for the way the leather handles both have ab it more pull in them then what I am use to but do like the feel of both of them

Hey folks, Ive been wanting to make some new wallets and I had a few questions. First does anyone know where I can get some different patterns for different styles? I know most folks just draw their own. But I'd like to make some bifold and trifold wallets. My other question is on leather thickness. What ounce leather do you all use for the main exterior and interiors? Do you buy the wallet inserts or make your own? Thanks, Chris

Album: http://imgur.com/gallery/4xN94/new Hey folks! So as opposed to the last build journal I did here, this journal is a tale of the things that went right. I'm really proud of how this wallet turned out and also, looking back, feeling good about where I'm going with this craft. This wallet order came from a random Instagram user who emailed me looking for a bifold with an ID window. We had a really nice, long email exchange consultation and finally landed on a variation of my usual design. He wanted additional, decorative red stitching on the inner cash pocket and the wings. I had recently done another Simple Wallet in something of the same scheme so I really liked where he was going. My goals for this build were to not repeat some of the mistakes of the last one, and to be more intentional about the application of my skills, specifically: * Skiving...I wanted this wallet to be much thinner than my previous bifolds so I was going to spend extra time skiving things down. * Edges...really wanted the edges to be clean, even, polished, and finished looking. * Stitching. I wanted to make sure all the stitching was clean and crisp. Cutting and basic construction was really quite clean and easy. The creasing went much faster than usual (not sure why...I've been feeling very confident lately in that department so I may have just creased more intentionally). The interior pocket edges were very fast, clean, and polished. I was trying to pay particular attention to where I started and stopped on these edges especially at the bottom of the cash pocket as I would be merging the wax during the final wax polishing. Once we got to skiving I applied the technique that Terrick over at Chartermade had taught me with his skiving knive. Basically you flip the knife over, and use the corner edge to "trace" the skiving line away from you, and then slip the round edge into the traced line and pull it back towards you skiving the leather away. Additionally he showed me how to feather the edges to make them even cleaner but just going back at the edge with the knife at a steeper angle. I didn't get the edges quite as thin as I'd like (went from 1.2mm to .7mm) except on the pocket insert which I got down to .5mm. We got started stitching the wing panels and the cash pocket and then looked really grand. The client chose a black foil on black chevre for the logo (my favorite, very subtle in my opinion). Once we had all that done we glued the panels together and stitched our way into a wallet! And it went really clean. I felt this was some of my best awl work yet, and the extra thinness of the panels really helped. Finally, the exterior edges, worked like a charm. I was very focused on making sure the iron, wax, buffing, sandpaper were all going the same direction and, in the end, I'm really pleased with how these turned out.
