I just picked up a nice used seiko lsc-8bv in Bangkok. Great place for cheap used machines! Its a binding cylinder bed (I believe it is the same machine as the consew 277) and I’d like to convert it to a standard machine - something akin to the seiko lsc-8b. Leather keeps catching on the binder needle plate. Can I just swap the needle plate for the non-binding type plate? It seems I can’t as the feed dog mechanism appears to be completely different. I’d be grateful for any guidance anyone might have on this type of conversion. Thanks!

Hey All, New to the forum, but not quite new to leather working. Wanted to pick the brains of experts around here and get some suggestions as to the best machine and attachment for our needs. We're looking to produce our current leather bag line in-house along with a few additional styles in the coming months, but don't have the correct machine to sew leather edge binding on our bags....or even the bags for that matter. I've been sewing our smaller items with a Brother LS2-B837 walking foot honed in exactly where I like it, but it does not suit the purpose of sewing duffel bags due to the flat bed design. I've prototyped a few duffels in the past on this machine, but it's definitely not ideal for production use! I really have 2 questions. One is about machine selection and the second is about sewing leather binding. Question 1. What machine recommendation do y'all have for sewing our style bags. We use #138 polyester thread on 5-5.5oz veg tan, edge skived, 2 layers minimum, more where pull tabs, handles, etc attach. We're not sewing through anything crazy like 1" of thickness, but we do have a few spots like handle sewing where its close to 20oz of leather. Picture of duffel bag attached for reference..... Question 2. When sewing a leather edge binding, do most manufacturers prefer to glue then sew or use a binding attachment to feed it through? Also, is the binding sewn on the same time as the seam, or is the bag sewn, then the binding attached after? We're low volume at the moment (15-20 bag runs) so not vitally important we're the most efficient at this time, but still need to be able to grow into our machine. Thanks all for the help in advance and excited to see what else I can learn in the meantime! Regards, Joe www.blvd-east.com

A lifelong friend is getting married, and another friend bought him a kit muzzleloader pistol as a wedding gift and asked me to put it together. I decided to make him a possibles pouch to go along with the pistol. Is is made from cognac colored heavy garment leather, lined with canvas, and trimmed in deer skin. The Strap is 5/6 ounce vegtan with a wool felt liner. I put two rows of stitching on it "just because". My friend is into bushcraft and stuff, and likes to make his own waxes. I figured I would let him duck the canvas.

I am looking for some leather binding? Does anyone know where I might be able to pick some up? This is my first binding experience with leather, so I don't know what I am doing yet. Is leather binding something that you can buy? or is it something that is generally made? What about binding attachments (I have a Singer 45K25)?

So I'm looking to try my hand at bookbinding from scratch, from printing and folding signatures to attaching wooden boards for the covers, to tooling and connecting the leather binding to the wood. The book that I want to bind is planned to be 8-1/2 by 11inch after folding the signatures, thinking about trying to find some 1/8th inch boards for the covers, and I'm planning on using 1inch leather strips to bind the signatures to and then glue the strips to the boards. I also plan to have a serious amount of tooling to do on the leather. I'm curious about what extra leather I should have around the edges, any recommendations or critiques would also be helpful.

So I got the book Purses in Pieces and was really excited to see the actual binding method was shown. Unfortunately, I just can't figure out how one of them is done! On page 19 here: http://www.oxbowbooks.com/pdfs/books/purses%20amerika.pdf it shows a binding that looks like twisted rope on the front, but in the back it's a tidy straight line stitch. How the hell is this done?! I can only figure out how to make it twisted on both sides which bulks it up too much.

Brand New Scharffix 2000 Leather Paring Device For Sale. Sensible Offers Considered Long story short, UPS delivered this late and I had to forfeit the commission for which it was purchased. Outside of this project, I do not have a use for this tool. Unfortunately, the company I bought it from want to charge me $80 to return the product, and so before doing so, I thought I would offer it for sale here. This tool has never been used, and comes in its original box, with instructions, spare blades, and adjustment wrench. Scharffix tools are made in Germany and as such are of very high quality. I was very impressed with how well made it is! For those of you who aren't familiar with this tool, Schmedt, the makers of the tool, have a video here. Skip to 1.26 to see this tool in action. I'm understandably looking to recoup as much as my original expenditure as possible and will consider sensible offers. Please let me know if you would like any further details or images. Nick

Hello all, I am new to this forum and new to leather working so thanks in advance. I am interested in getting a Highlead GC0318 (http://www.highlead....ead-GC0318.html ) mainly because it will fit my budget for a non portable walking foot machine. I am interested in working with a wide range of fabrics and materials, but primarily canvas and leather. The first concern that I have noted it that I can not find a binding attachment for this machine specifically. Does anyone have experience with this machine? Is this a clone of any other brand (pfaff, juki, etc.?) Does anyone know of a specific feet, and binding attachments that do work with this model? Alos what are the limitations with working with lighter fabrics like cotton or regular fabrics? Thanks!
