Wondering what you guys use to cover your workbenches when dyeing? I’ve been using brown paper bags but it’s a mess, still have to put down garbage bag below it etc. Is anyone using anything washable? Like a silicone mat? Or are there any surfaces you’d recommend, since I’m going to build my own workbench this summer? There’s some cast off granite countertop coming my way - it’s ugly already and I don’t care if I stain it. Need to find something that either doesn’t absorb the dye, or just doesn’t release it again onto future projects. Honestly, maybe glass? I could certainly set up a separate table with some glass on it for this. What do you think?

Hello, I am putting together a workbench to function as a multipurpose space for tooling leather, assembly, stitching, and a little dyeing too. I have access to a lacquered maple butcher block style table top and was wondering if there are any pitfalls about a lacquered finish with regards to general leatherworking? I hear lacquer is a very strong finish, but also tends to be thin and can scratch after some time. I will be tooling on a granite block inset into the table so there's no damage happening there. I might use the table top to bevel edges now and then. Is lacquer a good choice for a table top or should I go with a laminate instead? Thanks!

This is my first post but I have been lurking for a while. I read many times a nice thick piece of granite is the way to go for stamping leather. I had a guy message me off craigslist with this slab ( pic attached ). I assume this is a crazy good deal and i should jump on it and he will DELIVER it to my house! My question is ( probably stupid ) how can i tell if its real granite? Can you guys tell from this picture? Thanks!

Just finished some workshop renovations, thought I would share before you can't see it for stuff all over. So this is what happened I got a new surface plate for tooling so new bench for that, which led to new bench for punching and general stuff, which led to new cutting table and light box, which meant rearrangement of sewing machines and stuff. The wife says that she can't remember it ever being clean with nothing on the benches. I have to agree I seems weird looking, but that will change soon.

I think i came up with a solution to my current lack of a dedicated workspace - I've modified my computer desk to double as a workbench. This involved getting the monitor and such up off the desk so they wouldn't accrue damage when I bang away at rivets and such, and I've had to pick up a new poundo board and a new slab (the 70-pound surface plate / tombstone is too much to be moving around) but I should be able to keep on working now. There's a full write-up over at my main leatherworking blog, and here's a shot of the finished bench:

Here are some pictures of my workshop after I re-arranged it. I needed to re-arrange it and utilize the whole shop due to the increase in business. Let's see some picture of your shops and workbenches. I've seen some forums on there that have workshop and workbench pictures but none of them appear to be recent so I would like to see some of your shops and workbenches to help me utilize my space more efficiently. Thank You!

Hi folks, Just suddenly came across this great step-by-step "how to" for making that sort of workbench. I think it might be useful for someone who short in space, doing demo/keeping workshops etc etc etc It might not be as solid as 18th century Royal desk, but easily reconfigurable, extendable, fits in car etc etc etc All the credits to the author, please Click here!

Hi, I'm looking to build a freestanding mini workbench to use in my office/library/computer room or move it into the family room. I'm thinking of something with a 18" x 24" footprint or maybe slightly smaller that is sturdy enough for stamping and absorbing noise but is light enough to move from room to room. I have been thinking of using 2" x 4" or 4" x 4" lumber for legs with a wooden top. I could place a removable 12" x 12" or 12" x 6" small granite or marble block on top leaving a bit of room for tools and supplies. Any pictures or plans or suggestions for me? Thanks and regards, Mike

Just thought I would share a few pictures of an organizer / toolbox that I just picked up. I'm still trying to organize my work area and I think this will hold all my rivets, snaps, eyelets and anything else that doesn't have a spot yet. My local Tandy store has a fishing tackle box that they have to support with a block of wood when they open it or it tips over and spills the contents I like that I can remove the separate bins as I need them and the best feature is the "built in support" for the top shelf when you open it (2nd picture). I think it is a reasonable price at $29.99 ( in Canada) I'll post some pictures once I get some stuff in it. Have a great day.
