Don't You Hate It When.....

Recommended Posts

Working with leather is a combination of things.

The material is stiff and tough....

Materials are also expensive....sometimes difficult to obtain.

The cutting tools sharp...razor sharp.

The use of tools are often such that you must get it right the first time...mistakes cost time and materials to the point that you must start again....

So let's hear it....IE

Don't you hate it when skiving a piece and at the ¾ point you cut through the leather....

Oh I know right?

Everyone has a mishap...part of the price of admission.

Lots of finger strength,  sharp knives, permanent results from paint or dyes...stuff just seems to happen.

And it happens to the best and worst of us.

It's the journey, not the destination.  (Although we delight in destinations too)

When you make a made-to-measure item based on the client's measurements then the client decides that the original item they took the measurements from wasn't a good fit after all.

OUCH!

That's a "change order" .  I charge extra for that on top of time plus materials.

I love it when I cut each side to 9" then realize I actually cut one side to 8".:head_hurts_kr:

I have not done this one yet...but I imagine it's in my future.

Smallwares are the saving grace of materials....lots of things to make out of scrap leather.

Not so much as an oops, but my indecisiveness. Starting a project, "  do I make one of these? but I like the other ', but,  these are cool"  when I do finally choose, which carving pattern?  , theres so many. Takes for ever to decide .  By the time I've finally decided , its lunch time

Finish the holster that needs to ship in a couple days only to realize you didn't cut and die the strap you have to attach to actually finish it.

The folks who made wood putty in a squeeze tube made a fortune . . .

Somebody making leather putty in a squeeze tube could follow suit . . . maybe they could golf together in Miami beach

May God bless,

Speaking of which...any guesses as to when to fill the propane tank?

Some of us got 500gallon tanks to fill.  It's a big bill but one that lasts all winter.  Filling it in the summer is much cheaper than filling it in the winter.

You should patent that . Might come in handy to repair scratches etc . A bit like body filler on a car, fill scratch ,  smooth out or sand,   dye over the top. ;)

you guys know this sort of thing is already available right?

I just bought two tubes, one of blue and one of black. I'm going to try them as fillers on edges of made items, rather like a thick edge paint. If they work I'll get other colours

Its a vinyl repair paste for repairing scratches or splits in leather, especially furniture or car upholstery. I first used it about 35 years ago to repair splits on my Cadillac dash-top. I bought a kit from a company called 'Eastwoods' of USA who specialised in supplies for refurbishing US cars, With that kit you got special sheets of plastic which you pressed onto the paste as it set. The sheets had common surface textures so you could match your dash top's texture. The stuff worked ok, it wasn't the best but at about $10 for the set was a lot less than $500 Cadillac wanted for a new dash top panel shipped to me.

photo example of tubes of paste; the colours can be mixed, just like paint

Wood putty you can use for a gouge . . . an inadvertent saw cut . . . a hole drilled in the wrong place . . . a corner broken off . . .

It would be nice if leather workers had such a product . . .

Been almost in tears at times over a stupid mistake . . . did one the other day . . . but I'll get by on this one.  Was stamping serial number on a piece . . . doggone stamp bounced . . . got a lighter second stamp above and sligtly to the right of the original.  If this was wood . . . open the can . . . get out the putty knife . . . smear it down flat . . . sand it smooth . . . dye it . . . re stamp it . . .

Ain't nothing in the leather goods you can do that with.

May God bless,

Dwight

Yep...

Some of the dumbest stuff happens at times....especially when doing commissioned work.

The serial number?  That's gotta hurt.  Everything else had gone well up to that point...then the literally last step before putting it in a bag or box to go out the door.  I hate it when that happens.
