Just finished this one folks. I really like the colours on this. Still a few mistakes here and there but getting better. Sorry about the bombardment of pictures :)

The work is great. The green Taupe reminds me of my youngest daughter and her brunette hair died Red.

Neat, well stitched and you obviously done a good job on your blanks,

Thanks for the comments folks. I really like using bright/contasting colours. I think I might try mixing some with veg next.

Love these.

Is that a fabric liner in the billfold?

Thanks.

Yeah it's just a thin nylon fabric. Its a bit of a pain to line but I think it looks a lot better than just the back of the leather. It's realy cheap too so I picked up quite a few different colours.

very nice. So you turned the top of the backside piece correct and the front panel is only one layer of green as well? Curious because the goat I have from alran seems too thin on its own without lining it with another piece of leather.

Ill post pictures of a wallet where I doubled it up.

* Is this also the lower line of fil au chinois like you mentioned in the other post? If so can you send a link..would like to order some colors I can't justify a full spool of.

thanks

Great job!

I have to apologize, but is there a certain reason why the stitches don't go into the corners?

Thanks. I dont turn the top, I just skive the back layer towards the top a little and attach a second strip to give the appearance of it being turned. Although I probably should be turning it I just find it much easier this way. I like to be able to trim the top edge after it is attached to get it as straight as possible and I also find it easier to edge paint on a flat/square edge.

The front panel is one layer but its actually facing backwards, I use a narrower strip of leather, skived down which overlaps (sits behind) the pockets by about an inch. This adds strength to the centre section (between the pockets) and also looks a lot better when looking inside the wallet. Quite hard to explain but I've added some pictures below. Funny enough I just worked this out myeslf and it seemed an odd way to do it but looked good. I've just picked up a few books on wallet making and they used exactly the same process. I was quite pleased with myself :)

Here is a link to the Au Chinois, this is UK based so not sure if they ship US.

Thnak you Thor.

I've had a few people ask 'why the gap?'. No real reason except for it gives me larger scope for error.

I've not been doing this very long and still learning, I dont use any templates for my work, everything is measured and cut as I'm doing it so I tend to cut things bigger (so I can trim down) or leave a few gaps where stitches should join to give me that buffer for error.

I really need to spend a bit time drawing up some tempates, I think it would speed things up a lot.

Interesting. I understand what you mean by the back piece with the extra layer but the front Im not sure. :head_hurts_kr:

There is one extra piece facing out that just covers the center portion and goes under the hidden pockets but ends about half way in? If so that makes sense since it would look nice in the middle but it adds no extra bulk to the edges. Next wallet I make with goat on the outer Im going to try one layer like that, I don't know why but I thought it would be too thin on its own without some type of liner. Im assuming the liner you used is more for aesthetics, its not heavy enough to add any bulk.

Either way awesome colors. What edge paint is that and what color?

Yes the piece in the middle just sits behind the pockets. I have skived it down a bit as not to add too much bulk. And yeah the liner is just there for asthetics, Id doesnt add any thickness to the wallet.

The paint on the pocket edges is just one I mixed up from some Giardini paints.

Cheers Petewon how interesting as i have just bought from them can i ask which leather you bought ? i purchased the Chevre Liegee Main and quickly realised you need a good command of your stitching .

No problem. I have placed a few orders with them and have found them great.

I buy either Liege Main or sully depending on the colour I needed. The sully are a touch brighter in colour but seem a fraction thicker.

Enjoy

I would be interested in the swatch card pics. Alran was supposed to send me one but I haven't received it yet. Very curious about that Green color!

I'll dig them out and photograph them tomorrow when the light is better. To be honest I was after more of a lime green but I was well happy with this when it arrived. I've just picked up a lovely black calfskin today, I think it will look nice with the green.

Super clean and really nice edges, you used a machine right?

Thanks. :)

No it's all hand cut and stitched.

Ahh I see. Its just sanded then painted. The paint applied with a round awl. It takes around 3 coats with sanding between each application.
