I have only ever used 277 thread with 180/24 needles, or  ' small nails' as I call them, I've pretty much  done everything with that set up, but it just depends on your needs, obviously. All the best with your new machine  :)  :)

Thanks mate, I seem to recall that Wiz mentioned 277 is perfectly adequate for holsters and belts, I'm guessing that the only "advantage" of 346 for my needs will be appearance. 277 also appears to be available in a wider range of colours (here at least) so I'm thinking that will be the logical choice. But it's nice to know that I will have a machine that can sew rope if I want to.

What do you make, by the way?

Machines wot I have - Singer 51W59; Singer 331K4; Seiko STH-8BLD; Pfaff 335; CB4500.

Chinese shoe patcher; Singer 201K (old hand crank)

You appear to have gotten a bargain,  the prices on this model are now over $4k delivered to Adelaide.  This is from the same people you got yours from @dikman. Funny how a year later I find myself looking at the same thing.

Is this garbage or can you actually make something out of it. I am mechanically inclined and short on cash

I got one, and it stitches, out of the box. Maybe I got lucky. Never tried it on the supplied "tripod" and instead mounted it on my own wooden base. There is a picture somewhere around here.

Since I got it and sewed it off, I never used it and am still contemplating either buying a copper and chromium plating kits and plating some parts myself or taking it apart and sending it to be chrome plated because all that is not painted is bare steel and doomed to rust.

I got this machine locally, from an eBay seller in my city, and it only cost me about US$150, at my door, so I do not see a point in buying from China directly.

Today it is even CD$20 or US$15 cheeper than what I had paid: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/193082243092

The first thing I would advise is to change the needle system to 135 x 16 or 135 x 17. That would give you a better range of needle size selection and thread sizes.

Good luck,

My question is how well it sews, we all know they are built to a low price level,

But how different is a patcher say singer 53 or older, row of stitches than a Chinese patcher that's set up properly.

If you were given two sets of stitches could you really identify what one was made by the Chinese version

As I maintain they do have their place but... for the average hobbyist they are more of a tinkers machine that could get you out of a pinch. I wouldn't invest in one as an only machine or as an alternative to a good Singer 29K or even a clone of the Singer 29K. I do have both the Singer 29k and a China Patcher which is delegated to the darkest corner of the basement for probably an out the door journey after two more tinkering projects.
