Thank you, I use a soft tape to measure the circumference of it and and some if using a concho, on my first one made a connector strap for the back to fit it. This way it will fit different hats with a new backstrap. On the one with the concho you could make some extra hole on the bottom piece for adjustment. For fit try to make it snug so it stays on the hat, be careful if to snug it will make the hat tight, could use a dab of hot glue for added security or a stitch. For me being able to remove it easily for cleaning or changing bands cause I made a different one. Added photos to show, hope this helps.

Those came out well. heck all your stuff is looking good! I've always wanted to make some hat bands, but I've always wondered how to make them if you don't know the size of the hat it will end up on, and how they are attached to the hat. Any pointers?

Top photo is of an Osborne six inch round knife. I bought this when I was in the Navy Circa 1954. Number embossed in blade doesn't come up on Google. It has been ground professionally and cuts leather like butter. There is a slightly flat spot at the top of arch. I do not remember why that is there. $50 plus shipping Round knife at bottom of photo was custom made for me by Terry Knipshield. Three and a quarter inches tip to tip. This is a top of the line blade. I used it to skive leather and cut intricate pieces of leather. Blade is scary sharp. $200 plus shipping. Found the answer. There is a float with pin which is visible in the site glass. It should be between the two lines. Not something one would notice easily.

Chuck, you can get the two-sided leather tape from Wawak sewing supply with some thin leather, 2 to3 oz, on a let's say a 3" rad corner. If you wet the leather just a bit, I think you can compress it enough so you won't see any wrinkles. Make a 3" rad on a small piece and try it make the strip about 1 1/8 wide.

would really be cool to wrap in leather were you could see both sides , like a key fob maybe, but I don't know how to do that. I have a coin I'd like to-do that with but really , don't know a good way to do it so both sides show unincumbered. any help would be appreciated

Don't mess about with it Chuck. Some double sided tape and a double fold is all you need.

Thanks, I'll sure test it out, and it may work just fine, and if not on this, another project. I bought a side of utility-grade chrome tan from Tandy to see what it was like. BTW did you know a 17+ year old cow, according to the tag, is only about 30" wide in the middle lol. Just a note to those who order online, you get what the folks who go in person don't buy!! In this case about 10" or more was taken right down the back, then probably returned, as there was also some pen lines down the edge and on the rump area someone had something partially laid out with pen marks. I won't bother sending it back. I knew there would be problems you don't get in person, but it was cheap and just something to try out.

@chuck123wapati all foreign territory to me reading those posts, but sounds expensive, but I have to remember how incredibly cold it gets over there I have a solar hot water system on the roof. Nothing technical, just a booster switch for the winter months, but the water in our town can be quite salty and high in calcium, so the brass fittings pressure valves etc and element , and the tank corrode resulting in periodic ex$y replacements. Our local plumber gets plenty of work 😆 Needless to say i never drink the tap water unless it's boiled,and bottled water is very popular. Keep warm HS

I've had good luck burnishing with hide glue/bone glue and beeswax for firmer chrome tanned leather, such as the SB Foot "oil tanned" sides that Beiler's sells. The hide glue is water soluble so I seal the edge with wax after burnishing. I apply the beeswax with heat to improve penetration. Maybe the plain edge isn't the look you're after?
