Through the wonders of the internet and what I call internetworking, we have a series of videos made by LW member Nigel Armitage for another member. There have been a LOT of questions about the basics of hand stitching and I thought the entire site could benefit from Nigel's expertise. Take a look at his work and his other videos to see why I am impressed with his work. Thanks Nigel for taking the time to create these videos and I am looking forward to the next installment! http://youtu.be/zeQt-nvLWyo http://youtu.be/xS1j_Uifmhw

@Tugadude has suggested we setup an area for stitching irons, etc. It fits under Sewing Leather, so rather than a whole new forum area, here it is. For this thread, its main purpose is to collect and provide information. Posts that go off topic will be removed. So a couple rules for this thread. Reviews and information should list manufacturer's names, locations and model or item description so they can be found by other members. A link to the company website would be fine. Don't link to a specific page, keep it at the top domain level so the link is less likely to be broken when someone decides to reorganize their website or offerings. Photos should be p…

Okay - I got my Boss, have practiced a bunch with it - at least to the point of using the entire sample bobbin that shipped with the machine, and even made a quick sheath for my round knife. I'm using the standard leather needle and thread that was included with the machine, which I believe is 277. Last night I attempted to sew my first holster with it. It's obvious I needed a little more practice... One thing I quickly found was that I needed to plan the direction I sew better as the heel of the foot dug into the leather pretty severely where it wasn't flat (was sewing an avenger style). I also think I need to use the overstitch wheel to mark my stitch locations so I ca…

Hello fellow leathersmiths. I decided to post this hand stitching guide to hopefully help others avoid the trial and error and weeping and wailing that I encountered when learning how to hand stitch properly and to humbly attempt to contribute to the forum which I perceive as a wonderful thing. If only this type of information had been around when I was first learning! My heartfelt thanks to you Johanna! I offer my apologies beforehand if any of this has been previously addressed as I'm sure that some of it has been. This guide is not meant to be all encompassing but merely to add to the wealth of information readily available in books. I very highly recommend the boo…

I know this is a long shot, but does anybody have any examples (or any advice on where I can find examples) of stitches made with a 794 spear point needle? I'm curious to see how they look when compared to the 794 triangle points. Thanks! -Adam

Hello and thanks in advance. I have more tooling practice, by far, than sewing, and so I'm studying two handed saddle stitching, got a pony, etc. I just want to chose a saddle stitching thread that is practical for durable use on H. Oak veg tan butt dog collars I'll be concentrating on, and trying to eventually get a few into the local tack shop with tooled designs. And I'd like to get used to what I'll continue to use, up front, and not start all over, soon, with how something behaves. I have been looking at saddle stitch info... Al Stohlman was back in the day and, even today, Jo H. is purposefully traditional. These sources recommend non-waxed linen…

Hello! Previously I'd only hand-stitched stuff with waxed thread but decided to try bonded nylon. I like how this project turned out aesthetically, but I have two questions. 1) How do I keep the thread tight? I stitched the bracelet but when I bent it (copper core), the bottom thread appeared loose. Do I just need to try to sew with a lot more tension? Thicker thread, smaller stitch holes? (The thread I used is 277.) 2) Any suggestions for keeping the thread knot from unraveling from the needle? Because the thread is so slippery, it doesn't hold a knot very well, and I constantly have to re-tighten the knot.

So, I'm going to commit heresy. I've had time to ponder this while spending about 8 hours hand stitching a project. Here I go ... I don't believe that the saddle stitch is any "stronger" than the lock stitch. We often see it said, but I just don't see any reason for it. Hear me out - any given stitch length is the same whether it's locked by machine, or a hand sewn saddle stitch. If the thread is the same, the strength is equal. Each stitch line has the same number of stitches and, thus the same length of thread. The bottom thread on a saddle stitch goes all the way to the other side. The bottom thread on the lock stitch goes half way, thens around and goes ha…
