I’ve wanted to try making a trunk or hard sided suitcase for some time. My wife suggested a trunk for her cook books. Sure, sounds fun. I used 1/2 inch maple plywood for structure. Leather is chocolate pull-up from Waterhouse Leather and W&C English bridle for black trim. Hardware from Ohio Travel Bag and Brettuns Village. A bunch of brass escutcheon pins and black wool fabric for lining. Since I’m not a woodworker, hand sawing and assembling a “square” trunk took some time and practice to get it where I wanted it. Primarily watched You Tube videos for ideas on how to construct, cover and finish a trunk. Couldn’t find many written resources so I created …

Customer loves green so it will get progressive coats. I'm going to use an 'Alligator pattern' skin for the cover flap and other pieces. Sam:)

Hi all! I posted an album of a simple purse that I made as a first project, and mentioned I was working on a briefcase. This is my second project, and it took a lot more work than I anticipated. I couldn't afford a Saddleback Leather Front Pocket Briefcase, so I made one! The dimensions are all nearly exact. Other than some added pockets inside, it's nearly identical in every way, even the hardware size. Planning, drawing, making templates, buying stuff, and everything else probably took me 5 months. I researched every aspect for days, because I was so paranoid I'd buy the wrong thing or do something wrong. This forum has been instrumental in helping me, both in technique…

I finally finished a Dulles bag. I bought The Book of Dulles Bag Making about a year and a half ago. Even though it's in Japanese there are so many photos that help you figure things out. It also comes with full size patterns. I used some Bridle shoulders and from Maverick and pigskin from Springfield Leather. The front and back panels have a stiffener in them. The handle is all leather with several layers sculpted and then covered. I made the frame from some aluminum bar stock and wrapped it with some grainy calf from Maverick. Hand stitched with Lin Cable @ 7tpi. Lots of mistakes but happy with it and glad it's done.

This is a Braec Moedoic Budget Bag, It would have been used by Irish monks around the 9th-10th century. This is a reproduction piece as well as an apprentice piece. Its certainly not perfect, Ive never made a bag, nor have I ever done any tooling before so this entire project with all the research and detective work involved as well as the techniques was quite an educational experience. The stitching was quite special too since its Historical counterpart was sewn from the inside rather than it being turned inside out then sewn. Below is the other thread referencing with some other rather helpful leatherworkers helping me figure out a certain stitch i never actually u…

Used 2mm chisel punch by mistake, stitching took a very very very long time. Wickett and & Craig is a lot softer than I expected but it also makes the gusset a lot easier to make. Made a few design mistakes here and there, but OH WELL.

I just picked up Lisa Sorrell's book on leather inlay and overlay, and now I have a burning need to make some bags as a place to showcase the applique I'm going to make of my favorite dumb video game characters. From what I've seen and read, basic messenger bags are basically a couple rectangles with a gusset to bridge between them, which seems like something I shouldn't have trouble making a pattern of; I also have the Stohlman books on leather cases, which have a lot of nice tips for handle attachments etc. even if they're geared toward hand-sewing and veg tan. There are just a couple questions that are keeping me back from getting started: I really, rea…

Latest case off the bench, I wanted to do something to pay homage to the leather workers and saddlers who paved the way for modern leather craft and style. Its a 2x4 with a custom dye job to give it an old worn saddle look, 16" pocket, strap and pad, and a LOT of saddle style stamping. Thanks for looking! Chuck
