One more time....as the Adler, the one you mentioned before and this Pfaff now,,,,these machines have an external motor mounted under the table....no matter what brand it is (motor) as long as it pulls the machine and sews your leather it is a OK motor!! ( most likely a clutch motor...) Cant tell if it is a walking foot but you should be OK with purse leather in several layers....get yourself a DC servo motor from Toledo industrial sewing machines in Ohio ( Bob Kovar) and life will be good!! Dont have to worry about sewing your fingers into a purse and you will love the ajustable speed control on these motors!! Speed is a NO No on leather sewing machines!! Have fun and sew the heck out of this machine,,,,always use new needles ( spear point for leather...) and keep everything oiled,,,,get a manual!! then show off what you have created... Greetings

Well...the Adler 105 needs an external motor....no matter what brand it is....as long as it turnes the machine, not to fast....and strong enough to do the job..., Adler 105's go for about 800 bucks in bad condition to 1500 bucks in mint condition and some more.... James

Are these tools any count, I am sure they all made in Taiwan.....will that work for me being a medium beginner in leather carving and stamping...? Seems most stuff STleather has is a bit lesser then others.....anybody has dealed with this company?? Thanks for the effort to answer this topic... Greetings Jimbob

Hi there I have an ADLER 105 and make a lot of bags and 3-dimensional items as such.....works great and these ADLER's are very reliable!!! Some cheaper clone parts even fit these babies!! It has a small enough cylinder arm and works like a charm, very simple to operate and easy to tune, oil and clean......no wonder they have been around for so long!!! For bags, pouches and belts that is the one to have!! Not a saddle machine and no walking foot but affordable good 'ol German iron work!! Greetings Jimbob

Any of you heard or have dealed with a guy named Uriel Levy ........from Atlas levy sewing company in CA??? Is this a good source for parts, info or machines?? Thanks for the info... Jimbob

I have been carving more and more leather latly and enjoy this very much.....now I thought I do some highlites with dark dye...antique ? Went and protected my finished carving with tan-kote let it dry well and applyed (sheepwool) some antique dye from Tandys, let it set for 3-5 minutes and gently rubbed off overflow......boy was I mad when I discovered the mess....all the anthique dye had somehow made its way into the unfinished leather, I was able to whipe off most but it made a nasty mess and just about ruined the piece.....not what I wanted. Was tan-kote wrong.......it does a great job on protecting my acryls on leather, big time!! I have some leather sheene.....is that better for this task>>>>?? TNX fer all help on this jimbob

Jimbob replied to bex DK's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
Cool idea!! Need to try that one day, I have some of them pens laying around.... But myself I am using small, extra small and 000 size brushes, I decorate Furniture with acryl.floral motives...get u a very fine brush from the art store, dip it in dye touch a scrap piece of leathe to get the first heavy flow of dye away from the tip and go after it....steady hands, good light and magnifying glasses help too!!

Natalie The Adler 30-70 is strictly for repair work on shoes, handbags and leather clothe,,,,great to put on patches on biker vests....works wonder on repairing small purses. It is a money maker if you do small repair work, will not take much bigger then 69 thread!! So it is clearly NOT a machine for a saddlery!!!! But if you can get a working 30-70 for less then $500 take it home!!! It will pay for it self in a years worth of small repairs!! These machines cost in good used condition around 800-1200 dollar, they have a long arm and big bobbins...parts for these still plenty! If u get a killer deal, get it, they always sell good! Just rememnber it is called a shoe patcher for good reason!! Hope this helps a bit!! Jimbob

His forum name is sewmun I think!? Hope that helps,,,,, Greetings James

Thanks Bob Yes I was lucky this time, this one was owned by a VERY picky shoemaker many many years ago and his nefew got it to keep, it was stored in a heated room and well taking care off.... Thanks for the hint on the take up lever stroke! It is just amazing how well these machines are build, I found this machine sews very well, in its limitations as a patcher....but well capable of doing other stitching tasks too. It did not make these nasty marks every body was talking about, but a man could see some fine marking anyway....stitch looked beautiful....lots of people denied this here on the forum. So I am very careful to make a remark...me not being a pro. But me being crazy about these machines, that's for sure, haha.....just faszinated about the art of mechanics build many moons ago, regardless of brand or country they came from!! Oh, and by the way...they all are made to create, repair or make some money for the owner, well done!! Thanks for your time Bob James

She is home....230 miles straped on the basket carrier at a JEEP. All covered and secured well, she was a heavy girl to get back out of the basket....but I took sewing head off first then stand. Now she stands here in the shop, all cleaned up, oiled well and looking like new, I love the handwheel!! Now how do you thread one like this....never had had one before...so where does the thread go?? Well there was some kind of fishhook thingy, long and wirey...so down the tube hole it goes...bobbin threaded...wow differet too....OK, will this thing sew??? Leather scrap, well let's be careful not go to thick!....now handwheel turning, hoping and: BIG surprise___that baby is actually sewing, wow!!! Stitch length is changed by this little collar on needle bar, bobbin is small! But last's pretty good while on 69... Now I am stuck, what is the little lever close to the thread pick up lever, u can change the setting from duenn, mittel and dick....that is German and means: thin, medium and thick....is revering to the material thickness???????? I have her done promised to somebody, of course for greedy provit@@@ But should I let her go...somebody will treat her bad, will not oil her well and maybe one day put her in the basement to die....once proudly made to do great work and straight stitches, to repair and to please its owner....gosh, somebody help me...I've got this sewing mashine syndrome@+!?/.@+-)):::...

Fixing to pick up a mint working Adler 30-1 on Friday.....wonder if this is a long arm and how much material thickness it can handle.....anybody would have a service manual?? Also parts and such.....I am aware it is a patcher, is it the one with the bigger bobbin and finally what would be the value of such beauty in very good original condition??? Thanks soooo much for ya all"s help!!

How Do I Get Started Making Bags?
Jimbob replied to particle's topic in Satchels, Luggage and Briefcases
Just got caught in the "bag" thing too!! The Al Stohlman books are a very good way to learn Bag tricks and my way of learning is peeking, anywhere I see a bag I peek....open it, turn it around and touch it....often get the looks of the lady's.....but that's how u see how's made! I also use poster or brown paper to make the basic design then, as siad!!!> I think it throu, because when its sewn up or cut off it is done...haha...often u need to put it together in reverse....so make sure u know what goes where! Also try to buy an old bag at a yardsale, take it apart und copy the design or change as u go!!!!!! Remember most bags are a box with rounder corners...front, back and a skirt...a flap and there u go!! As I said, me just getting there....I love doctor bags and back packs!! Gud luck and get into it deep.... Greetings James
