  1. Cool idea!! Need to try that one day, I have some of them pens laying around.... But myself I am using small, extra small and 000 size brushes, I decorate Furniture with acryl.floral motives...get u a very fine brush from the art store, dip it in dye touch a scrap piece of leathe to get the first heavy flow of dye away from the tip and go after it....steady hands, good light and magnifying glasses help too!! Jimbob
  3. Natalie The Adler 30-70 is strictly for repair work on shoes, handbags and leather clothe,,,,great to put on patches on biker vests....works wonder on repairing small purses. It is a money maker if you do small repair work, will not take much bigger then 69 thread!! So it is clearly NOT a machine for a saddlery!!!! But if you can get a working 30-70 for less then $500 take it home!!! It will pay for it self in a years worth of small repairs!! These machines cost in good used condition around 800-1200 dollar, they have a long arm and big bobbins...parts for these still plenty! If u get a killer deal, get it, they always sell good! Just rememnber it is called a shoe patcher for good reason!! Hope this helps a bit!! Jimbob
  4. Very fine work, love the almost water color effect!!! Nicly designed but still simple....fine art work out of ordinary leather hide...well done!! James
  5. I located a beautiful Adler 30-70 with motor and stand in Montana....got the guy down to $750!!!! And now I realize I am not able to travel that far....shipping to much for me also... He needs to sell fast and seems to be a nice guy! He has it on craiglist, search under Adler 30-70 or email me, I have his adress...I hope somebody closer to Montana can get this deal!! JimBob
  6. Thanks so much for this great info....I was aware of the BCC thing but did not realize the harvesting fact...good solid info for all of us here!! Agn TNX James
  7. Hello there... I am guessing this is not a walking foot machine, u may attach a roller foot and get by to do light to medium leather....but best bet would to move ur question to the sewing machine forum...there are tons of people with great Singer knowledge...try to find Bob Kovar from Toledo Ohio....he is a sewiong machine god!!! His forum name is sewmun I think!? Hope that helps,,,,, Greetings James
  8. Thank's so much, been looking for a while now....never done garments, we will see how this works out! Again, thank you....
  9. Thanks Bob Yes I was lucky this time, this one was owned by a VERY picky shoemaker many many years ago and his nefew got it to keep, it was stored in a heated room and well taking care off.... Thanks for the hint on the take up lever stroke! It is just amazing how well these machines are build, I found this machine sews very well, in its limitations as a patcher....but well capable of doing other stitching tasks too. It did not make these nasty marks every body was talking about, but a man could see some fine marking anyway....stitch looked beautiful....lots of people denied this here on the forum. So I am very careful to make a remark...me not being a pro. But me being crazy about these machines, that's for sure, haha.....just faszinated about the art of mechanics build many moons ago, regardless of brand or country they came from!! Oh, and by the way...they all are made to create, repair or make some money for the owner, well done!! Thanks for your time Bob James
  10. She is home....230 miles straped on the basket carrier at a JEEP. All covered and secured well, she was a heavy girl to get back out of the basket....but I took sewing head off first then stand. Now she stands here in the shop, all cleaned up, oiled well and looking like new, I love the handwheel!! Now how do you thread one like this....never had had one before...so where does the thread go?? Well there was some kind of fishhook thingy, long and wirey...so down the tube hole it goes...bobbin threaded...wow differet too....OK, will this thing sew??? Leather scrap, well let's be careful not go to thick!....now handwheel turning, hoping and: BIG surprise___that baby is actually sewing, wow!!! Stitch length is changed by this little collar on needle bar, bobbin is small! But last's pretty good while on 69... Now I am stuck, what is the little lever close to the thread pick up lever, u can change the setting from duenn, mittel and dick....that is German and means: thin, medium and thick....is revering to the material thickness???????? I have her done promised to somebody, of course for greedy provit@@@ But should I let her go...somebody will treat her bad, will not oil her well and maybe one day put her in the basement to die....once proudly made to do great work and straight stitches, to repair and to please its owner....gosh, somebody help me...I've got this sewing mashine syndrome@+!?/.@+-)):::...
  11. Fixing to pick up a mint working Adler 30-1 on Friday.....wonder if this is a long arm and how much material thickness it can handle.....anybody would have a service manual?? Also parts and such.....I am aware it is a patcher, is it the one with the bigger bobbin and finally what would be the value of such beauty in very good original condition??? Thanks soooo much for ya all"s help!!
  12. OK....I need to know...what is it with this Santoro guy???? Is he special....me not know much, my girls at home get hyperventilated over Guccii or Coach...is he in this catergory?!? Just wonder...me learning! James
  13. Just got caught in the "bag" thing too!! The Al Stohlman books are a very good way to learn Bag tricks and my way of learning is peeking, anywhere I see a bag I peek....open it, turn it around and touch it....often get the looks of the lady's.....but that's how u see how's made! I also use poster or brown paper to make the basic design then, as siad!!!> I think it throu, because when its sewn up or cut off it is done...haha...often u need to put it together in reverse....so make sure u know what goes where! Also try to buy an old bag at a yardsale, take it apart und copy the design or change as u go!!!!!! Remember most bags are a box with rounder corners...front, back and a skirt...a flap and there u go!! As I said, me just getting there....I love doctor bags and back packs!! Gud luck and get into it deep.... Greetings James
  14. Are they walking foot and is it head only? Reverse? Where are u located...? Thanks

  18. Hello I am using hobby lobby acryl paint, on belts, chopper seats and more...make sure u paint on damp unfinished clean leather (veg tan only!) Then dye all remaining spaces then apply to the painted area several thin coats of acryl leather coating, there are several out there...that will last for a very long time!! James
  19. Shirley Thanks so much...my wife and daughter are "handbag freaks" so I went and looked at their collection...seems like lots of them smaller ones have liner glued on leather....well...wonder if glue will show thru? I have fabricated the "sack" style liner, just not an elegant way for smaller pieces!!?? Thanks again!! Greetings James

  21. Being born and raised in Germany means if you like guns or knives u are somewhat out of the order, so here I am...the odd guy...the custom knife making wave just started peaking over the fence in Germany arround early eighties and guess who was hooked....the odd guy! I read tons of stuff about knife making, made some knives and then some more...collected knives and was in heaven working on weekends in a Master knife shop. This master, Eduard Trittler had a son....he just had taken a leather class with Wolf Borger(later a first class custom knife maker!!) who also was working in this shop a few years earlier. Well, short story long...I sat down with the son, learnd for 3-4 hours how to do leather knife sheats. Boy was I proud, made my own knife sheats...wow! Guess what, knife making died and the love for leather grew so fast...here I am, the odd guy doing leather stuff and not looking back....ohhh and I still love knives and guns!!
  22. Gamekeepers friend.....sure they are!!! Ur work is outstanding and very clean....I have a Bullmastiff girl, Biene is now over 14!!!!years old and still going...our brindle English mastiff keeps her company and our adopted Pitbull baby is hanging on her tail all day!!haha...... They all wear nylon, to keep the image low profile...Oh well, but I love ur collars, really cool stuff!! Thanks for sharing!!
  23. OK, I am back....picked up a Singer 211G155 and 2 Singer 188K1...all on tables and with clutch motors, 2 extra motors and a bonus TWI household?? freearm machine??? Gave $50,- bucks for all , so I better not complain about the looks...they look ruff......the 188K's look Ok but the machine I wanted the most is in ruff shape....short story long....where do I start.....they all turn and needle bar and feed dogs move....the 211 was kind'a hesitating then gue ?? came loose and it went ( all by hand with hand wheel...) Now where would a man start to bring them back to life...they deserve a life after death, they need to be put to good work, I am assuming I can put in a new bobbin case and bobbin in the 211G....how far would you take them apart to go and get all the dirt out...how do I get some of the lite rust out of around the bobbin case...? I don't think there was water in, but some damp conditions for sure...? The 211 has a lid over bobbin missing, the 188's look complete.... As usuall, thanks for all the gud info from this part of the forum!! Greetings from SW-VA James
  24. Hello back.... Just did not have the time and financial means to get a roller foot, also have a roller guide.....they are easy to make ur self! Neels has all you need for this machine, give him a shout....did not realize u are in the gud 'ol UK...I am original from Germany, got hung here since abt 1993...OK on the manuals and I will make you a nice clean cpy and will send it over the big pond if you give me your shipping address.....so If I can help u any more let me know! Oh...and if you send Schmetz a letter or e-mail and ask kind'a naïve what needle would work...they send u a nice info packet back with at least one or two packs of 328's needles,,,haha, don't tell anybody I said that,,,hihi... Be gud and have fun!! James
