  1. Welcome from the West Middlands! You will find all the resources you need here, they are such friendly folk. I attempted a horse carving but I have a long way to get as good as some of the pictures Ive seen on here. Already being able to draw them should put you in good stead. Im sure you'll have lots of fun on your journey. Paul
  2. Hi Em, Welcome from the West Middlands (almost Wales). This forum is is especially friendly to newbies. Yep, leatherwork goes hand in hand with motorcycles and rock/metal. That's how I got started, by wanting to make an Iron Maiden patch for my bike jacket. You will find all the resources you could imagine here. Paul
  3. With the rubber cement, do you apply it to one or both surfaces? Ive used Parcel tape (and then double sided tape to stick it down) and other types of tape but it leaves the gunk behind on the leather when I peel it off. Is there any way to prevent this? Does the rubber cement peel off cleanly? Thanks.
  4. I would have thought that a fraction of a millimeter either way would have no adverse effects in setting equivalent fastners.
  5. I have not used Resolene much but I will be using it on a pair of black (with a white tooled logo) bracers that I'm about to start making. I will be using an airbrush to spray it 50/50 with water. I will try it on some scraps that I'll prepare first before using it on my project. I'm sure I'll find your advise useful too
  6. That's a great idea. I like it.
  7. Wow! That is a truly stunning case! If the customer isn't happy with it somethings wrong with him! I'm sure he'll be blown away by it. I was just by looking at the pictures!
  8. I like them, especially the panniers and tool bag. How are the things held onto the forks? Snap fasteners or velcro?
  9. I like it. What dyes did you use?
  10. That's absolutely stunning! Excellent work!
  11. Very nice.
  12. I use a small stitching pony for the time being, until I make something better. I find it much easier and more consistent to punch my awl holes in advance too.
  13. Welcome from Herefordshire Shaun!
  14. Thanks again for the tips. I know the strapping you mean. I'll consider it. Thank you all!
  15. Createx airbrush paints are very good. I would apply it in a few thin coats with an airbrush if you have one.
  16. The phone cases I have done so far are the slip cases. They are wet formed and fit snugly. (2mm thick veg tan leather). I have a semicircular notch cut out of the bottom and top to make it easy to remove. There are pictures in my Gallery and website if you'd like to have a look. I wouldn't consider using chrome tan for such a case. But that's just my opinion. Phones tend to have the screen/buttons locked when not in use so the buttons being pressed in the case has never been a problem.
  17. Cyber, do you also spray the lace braiding right around to the rear of the seat? Nice seats guys.
  18. Thank you for your comments and advice everyone. That's a great help.
  19. I was considering to use a 2 in wide strap and possibly a 2 in buckle and D loop, but now I'm thinking it may be too wide. Maybe better to go for 1.5 in strap and 1.5 in buckle. I wouldn't want it to be restrictive for the dog.
  20. Hi All, I'm looking for information on how to make a dog collar sturdy enough for a St Bernard. Ive seen many dog collars in the collars section, and Ive seen a number of methods to fix the hardware. However, I'm not sure If any special precautions or construction techniques should be used for such a big dog. My first thoughts would be to have the buckle and D loop hand sewn in and then to use rivets. I was also considering 10oz or 3.5 - 4mm thick leather 2 inches wide. I'd be interested to hear your comments on this matter. Thank you.
  21. That's amazing and I would never have guessed it was your first seat. Id be happy if my first seat is half as good. It's a project in waiting.
  22. Fantastic work, the tooling/stamping is very crisp.
  23. Dave, I never regarded myself as an artist either, I'm still not sure, but the leatherwork has definitely brought out my artistic/creative side. I agree about what you say about the cheap tat thats sold everywhere. Friends think I'm being pedantic when I point put a mass market belt has been sewn incorrectly and the edges arn't burnished or even beveled and buffed.
  24. I usually scan the design and print it on a laser printer on OHP film. You can press pretty hard if necessary and use the film several time before it breaks through. Since its made from acetate or similar, its fine on cased leather. I use it for pretty much all my work.
  25. Interesting thread! I'm a microwave/RF (radio frequency) design engineer, designing antennas, components like filters, couplers and polarizers. It has nothing to do with microwave ovens! Antennas are for civil and defense applications. I work from a few hundred MHz to hundreds of GHz. I even have a couple of my antennas in orbit around the earth on satellites.
