My First Tooled Belt
OdinUK replied to OdinUK's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
I first dyed the whole stamp area in red making sure the dye went in the lowest parts of the letters. When dry, I got a bit of an old t-shirt, and used it to tightly wrap up some paper towel ( would have used cotton wool but had none) and I applied black dye to that. Just enough dye so that it was not too saturated but enough so that it comes off onto the leather and gently dabbed it over the raised areas of the stamp. Once you get a feel for how much dye comes off you may add more dye and go over it several times. Thats how I get that two tone effect. Its the first time I used it after a couple of practice goes. I was a bit miffed that the stamp was not quite level! -
My First Tooled Belt
OdinUK replied to OdinUK's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks Matt. I would normally use a matting tool for the small areas between the red strands but I had to make sure that the belt was finished for this weekend so I tried to get the beveling even. It does take q fit bit of practice I must admit. I did several practice goes first. -
This is my first tooled belt. A friend bought it for her partners Xmas present. The pictures could be better but I found it difficult getting a suitable exposure with the camera I was using. Any constructive criticism would be welcome, if it would help to improve my next attempt.

Thanks. Before dying, I used Oxalic acid to clean the leather, it also has a very slight bleaching effect to make it lighter. The red was airbrushed on and that comes out lighter than applying the dye directly. I prefer using the dye where I can so the natural texture of the leather can be seen.

Thanks Aurelie! I only use paint when I cant use a dye to get a bright enough colour or certain effect. I've been learning to airbrush, so I'm hoping to make them a little more artistic, using dyes and paints in more creative ways.

Its absolutely stunning! Congratulations!

Only the white is acrylic paint. The red and black is Fiebings oil dye. All colour is airbrushed on, liquid latex used to mask the various bits off and then a fine tip regular brush to touch up around the edges. The finish is Saddle Lac sprayed on. I'd like to use a less glossy finish, maybe super or satin sheene. Can anyone reccomend anying else that can go on dyed and painted leather to seal it or protect it from rain and dirt? Thanks for your comments.

Excellent work, I love it! What is the final finish you used?

Deer Skin Fringed Bags
OdinUK replied to bluesman1951's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Nice bags, Ive not made anything like this yet, the closest I made are suede ring pouches for my friends weddings. -
Thanks for that, I like it.

Thanks Jon, The black background is done with the E294 series background tools. The white background is done with the pebble tools from Springfield leather, although I see a similar tool at Tandys (M884), I think its the same tool but not certain. Im currently learning to airbrush, so I hope I can add more shading and artistic dying and painting to my leatherwork soon. The hammer logo is from the Sign of the Hammer album cover and depicts a stylized hammer of Thor and the Valkyries wings.

Here is my latest Manowar back patch. Its a single large back patch to go onto a bike jacket. It measures 17 in tall and 14 in across the top and tapers to 10 in along the bottom.
