  1. Cecil, I always liked the looks of belts like that, but I dont know how anyone can stand to carve those tiny details. I have to use reading glasses and magnifiers when I carve big pictures these days. I am sure there is a market out there, I hope you find it. Thanks for sharing the pictures Clay
  2. if you go to the other side of the leatherworker site, not the forum, there is a list of suppliers towards the bottom of the page. Beside a lot of the names, it tells what they sell and has contact info for them.
  3. Shirley, The lacing is really nice, and I kind of like the fringe, but it sure isn't as attractive as your normal carved seats. But, WOW, what an advertising opportunity. I hope it gets you a lot more attention, and business!
  4. Thanks Regis and Roo for your comments. Shirley, I tried to get pictures of you from Guido too, but he had this sledge hammer and was looking at my kneecaps and I decided to drop it. Skip, the bear face is painted and sealed and was done on too small a piece of leather to do much more with it anyway. I really need to learn to figure out whole pictures before I start out. One way or another, I'll figure out a way to make this work out.
  5. I just assumed that since Guido gave it to me, I had permission to use it. If he has a problem, tell him to take it up with Guido!! The cake was yummy, btw!
  6. I haven't posted any pictures in a while because, well..... I just cant see to get anything finished up. Trying to come up with original stuff to work on instead of someone elses patterns is a LOT of work and I sure do make a lot of scrap leather. I think the buffalo feathers picture is done. I can't get a decent photo of it but here it is anyway. I think I might send it off to that show in April in Indiana. I did a tutorial on the buffalo feathers project and I think it's floating around in cyber space somewhere. Johanna probably pulls out handfulls of hair and bangs her head on the computer desk every time I send her something to work on. I bet she'd love to be able to do this to me somedays :comppunch: I have also been working on a bigger version of the open mouthed bear I did a tutorial on last year. Somebody ( I wont name names here but she really carves a neat mule!) complained that the one I sent her was too little! So the latest version is 8X 10 and in color. So far, so good. But when I put it in a frame, it looked boring. So I tried to think of some way to add a little something to it. My first idea was a matt that looked like tree bark. It ended up being a hole in a tree. The matt turned out pretty neat, but most of the people that have seen it asked "how did the bear get inside the tree?" I had planned on adding some leaves to the tree to spice it up a little, but never got that far since most people didn't like the bear inside the tree. So then back to the drawing board. My next idea was to make a matt of carved leaves that looked like the bear was crashing out of the leaves. I started drawing this up, and my wife said it was going to be WAY too busy and take away from the bear, so she suggested just a couple sprays of leaves framing the bear. So I drew it up that way. Well, my consulting team doesn't like that at all. They all think the bear will look cooler crashing out of the leaves. (they probably just want me to carve all those leaves so they can say "gee, that looks too busy". So I had another thought. How about a couple bear paws coming out of the leaves too, like he was clawing his way out (like Robb Barr's eagle). Yesterday I decided to see if I could make a bear paw. Here is what I came up with. Well, after I got this finished, I realized that the paw is WAY to small for the bear's face so it's not going to work either. And, there is no way a paw the right size is going to fit on the picture. So, it's back to the drawing board again. Guess I'll work up a pattern of leaves for the bear to crash out of and see how that looks. I'm sure someone will sell me more leather if I run out, right??

June 13-14 Jim will be conducting a workshop for the Santa Fe Trail Leather Artists Guild. The actual location is yet to be determined, but it will be in the Topeka, KS area somewhere. We haven't finalized the project, but it sounds it will a notebook cover and include some figure carving. There will be a small materials fee. People can get more info by contacting Jane Turner
  11. April 12 Jim Linnell will be doing leatherwork demonstrations all day at the Tandy Leather Factory store in Mesquite, TX. Jim says "I like doing this sort of thing because I get to help people with whatever they are struggling with. What I demo will depend on what people want."
  12. Now that Peter has joined the forum, hopefully we will be better informed where he is going to be and what he is teaching. We try to keep the calendar updated, but cant post what we dont know about. So if anyone has information on an upcoming class or event, add it to the calendar or let one of the moderators know so they can do it. I hate to see anyone miss a class that they would have attended if they would have known about it. Clay

  14. Ok, I agree Mr. Miller is a great guy, but he's around 6'3". Wouldn't that make him more like a banana????
  15. If you look at this previous topic, maybe it will help you out some. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=454
  16. My turn now. Hope you have a reallly great birthday Roger!!! Lets all see if we can get Bruce to lead us in singing!!!
  17. Hey David, If they reject any of the seats, you can send one of them to me. I'd love to have a piece of your art hanging on my wall. I dont get it. If you're gonna have a custom bike, why not have custom seats. And doesn't a custom seat mean "different" than everyone else's? They really need to let you run with your creativity! Do these people have an email address? All your seats look great David! Clay
  18. I have to agree with Jon here. I try to read all the posts here on saddles and trees, and a lot of times I feel like I am just getting more confused. But, this last post by Rod and Denise explained "rock" in a way that makes sense to me. Thanks for keeping it going until even the slowest of us "get it". Clay
  19. Here is another one from Peter that just popped into my email. He said he'd figure out how to post himself when he gets back from his latest trip. These are crazy, I had to look twice to make sure they weren't just photos. Hello, ...here are some inlays for boot tops. Both the Harley and Porshe are four inches wide (they should appear on your screen close to actual size) and are carved on 2-3oz leather. The blue surrounding these matches the color of the boot top and is there just in case the cut-out in the boot top leather is not precise. I will post the finished boots when they are completed. Peter
  20. Hey Pete, I do everything left handed, but at drawing patterns, I aint no better than you. I was wondering if you ever carved the leaves? It sounds like a neat idea and I'd like to see how it went. I had never thought of trying to make it look like some of the leaves were backwards. I'd like to see examples of how Bruce does it too, but getting pictures out of him is almost as bad as getting him to sing Happy Birthday :rofl:Hey Pete, I do everything left handed, but at drawing patterns, I aint no better than you. 21. Hey Roger, Looks like you have been busy lately. I really like all the seats you have been doing. You got the feathers down pretty good, but I think I like this one best. I find faces to be a challenge too, but this one looks really good, especially in color. And you did some really neat effects on the stockings! Clay
  22. Last week, Peter Main became a member of our forum (finally, I can quit begging). He is leaving for Austrailia on Wednesday and hasn't yet had time to figure out how to post things here, so he asked me to post this for him. For any of you that haven't seen Peter's work, check out his website here ...here is a wedding album recently completed. The covers are 2-3oz leather with inverted lettering, borders and corners. There is thin foam padding between this leather and the heavy card boards. These boards have beveled edges to give it all a nice roll around the outside. The leather is turned on all edges in traditional bookbinding style, and meets with a goatskin lining on the inside. The hinging is made with two folds to enable the cover to lay flat when open. The pages (12 x 12") are held in place with three inter-screws...these have goatskin covered heads. The spine has a leather covering (which conceals the pages) that can expand if required. The covers and spine were sprayed and all the front detail was done by sable brush...with spirit dyes.
  23. Hi Tom, Your helmets are really unique and you do great work. I am glad you found us and are sharing pictures of your work. It's always fun to see the things that others are doing especially when they are doing really cool stuff like you are. Welcome to the forum. I'll be watching for more stuff from you. Clay
  24. Is it the mask he doesn't like, or the fact that someone has a stangle hold on his throat???? I think that mask is AWESOME!!! I love how you did all the embossing on it. I wanna try one of these someday too. They look really fun. Clay
  25. I just want to thank each one of you for your birthday wishes. I really appreciate the kind thoughts and word from each of you. Bruce, they used to have karoke on Wednesday nights in the lounge at the Holiday Inn in Sheridan. Maybe you should let us all hear what you got there! Shirley, Guido never did show up with that cake or the surprise. I am probably lucky about that, huh? Thanks again everyone, you are all great! Clay
