Holster #2, a little better
JLSleather replied to carguy4471's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Oh, yeah.. full-strength resolene is spelled C- A- K- E- Much better to let the leather shine.. not the wax on top of it! -
This - in my mind - is simple production stuff -- not the same realm I'm talking about. If parts are clicked, glued, stitched,.. and that's the scope of it, then that takes a bit of experience, but no real talent. ANYbody could do that equally well. In that case, I'd "price shop" too -- if there is no difference, then why pay a difference?!@#! Two guys order the same great quality leather, assemble with the same glue, stitch with the same thread, in the same (or virtually the same) machines, then WHY pay more for one than the other? I mean, once the die is made, does it MATTER who hits the button on the clicker?! I don't mind paying more IF IT REALLY IS better. OH,... and if anyone has ever been to cutesy -- you know you'll see items (spelled c- r- a- p- usually) are "crafted" or "made with love", or "home made by Jenny (or wally, or whatever)".... Here's a tip: love is not an ingredient

Yeah, basically. I'm going to sell a couple of houses shortly... you should see them LINE UP to "help" me with that Seriously, if I sell a house, and you buy a house,... then some "third party" gets thousands of dollars ... WHY exactly?!@#!@!!
-
Yeah, personal integrity is the way I choose to do things. BUT.. keep in mind that there are people who do nothing but buy something somewhere so they can sell it somewhere else at a profit. They basically have no skills, and have often convinced themselves that this 'knack' for scavenging and re-selling somehow IS a skill I mean, some of them do know what it's worth.. but if they can catch you selling underselling it (no matter the reason) they can sometimes manage to convince themselves that they have some 'talent'. This is often women, or anatomical males. You know .. not a job for a man, really.

I'm not saying there aren't cheap products made which aren't worth a dime even though they claim "hand made" (because some really is just junk, regardless of how many hours someone claims they have in it). I can make a GOOD holster with the best materials available for an actual cost of about $15. And I could make poo in the same amount of time. the time invested does NOT make them equal... Yesterday, I threw two holsters in the trash, which - in my opinion - were considerably better than much of what I see for sale these days.

Yeah, just one more "plug" for that guy (next time I send a bill ). Fast, friendly service and a product exactly as he described it. Install painlessly.

Holster #2, a little better
JLSleather replied to carguy4471's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
That's a bit smoother. Just a tip... you may find it's beneficial NOT to crank that curve into the back "fin" of the avenger. I know them sensitive types like to see it that way, but truth is it conceals far better if you let the belt pull it -- and the pistol grip -- in to the body. If you wear it "at the appendix", maybe don't matter, but the farther back, the bigger the benefit. -
Yeah, true. Often comes with some long-winded story about how the "flaws" are what make it "hand made". It certainly occurred to me to educate, but as Ron White points out.. 'ya can't fix stupid"
-
What holes aren't the same as what? Are there two 6mm holes in the back of yours?
-
Well, in all fairness, there are some $38 holsters listed at $100+ too. That custommade site is FULL of low-grade, overpriced poo. I got an email.. was it a year or two ago, about selling on there, but when I saw the fees I got out quick. That would have been a good bit of money for them for doing basically nothing.

I'll be selling some things here after the 'break'.... from dyes / finishes to chrome tanned leathers to hand tools. And machine needles and threads. And the stand up drill press, if picking it up. Basically, I'm keeping the stitching machine, the tooling 'stuff', the 'dummy guns'... and most the rest kin git gone Just a 'heads up' at this point, buy FYI I'm looking to downsize and help the next guy a bit -- but not looking to dump a bunch of stuff at 10¢ on teh dollar (some folks see "for sale" and get ignorant). Oh, I do have one of those sewing edge guides, used about twice (or was is 7 times, whatever), I'd take $50 for. I replaced it with a drop-down guide. Came off a Cobra 4 machine, ...

Got one for the new .45 shield.. don't s'pose anybody interested in that one, tho ... Doing a little purdyin' up, pattern on cutesy soon...

Sometimes I throw a few things on ebay,... partially cuz I like to see how many leather people "watch" it, and partially jus cuz I kin Somebody jus offered me $38 for a holster Gotta have a sense of humor sometimes ....

Belt Length
JLSleather replied to mojave's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
To make a belt, you need a strap 8-10" LONGER than the "size" of the belt. And a double shoulder CAN be had in the 66" long range, but I would let the supplier know that you need it that long (wide). And that WOULD work. But personally, I would instead look to buy a back, or a bend. These WILL be long enough, and will be firmer leather (a fella that size, FIRM is GOOD ) -
Belt slot punches.....
JLSleather replied to carguy4471's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
My 1/4" x 1 1/2" slots fit quite nicely with lined belts. Not sure what you're doing differently. I've seen them there slots 3/8" to 1/2" wide, and long as they aren't in my holsters I'm okay with that -
I never point. But I sometimes do use names and labels
-
Yeah, pretty much. I don't have a "job" because i'm not one of the useless (and generally effeminate, truth be told) 75% (personal integrity is genetic)... and I have no desire to be the one carrying 3, so there's that. And I don't have employees, because I have no desire to pay 3 boogers while the fourth one does the work! Usually, it's the ones having long convesations about "working smarter, not harder".... when they really mean not working at all. Just wouldn't work out. I'm not opposed to tact and politically correct, but I don't' adhere to either at the expense of the truth. If you're useless, prob'ly just a matter of time before I point that out
-
Might make a difference on the time frame depending on the model (they could be temp out of a popular one, I suppose). But $39 x 8 = 312. All 8 pistols would all go in a large flat rate priority box, which is currently $18.75. That's $330. Maybe vary time on occasion, but my last one from Rings --.gun in hand in a few days. Not just blue guns, but anything really .... I don't mind paying a bit more if there is a service being offered. Like, you pay more at retailers for Hermann Oak leather, but you skip having to buy 10 sides. Fair enough .. IF the leather is the same I'm getting from HO (it likely isn't). Or I pay an extra $1 for buckles but I get to not buy 100 of 'em. All of that is generally fine. But if I'm paying more for some "service", then I need to know what service it is I'm getting, and what I'm paying for it.

Pancake holster construction
JLSleather replied to JLSleather's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Having made both, I can tell you they are not the same. -
GOTTA go with teh LL. The 'S" point leaves too "long" of a hole.. see how it almost looks like there is space between teh stitches. The LL fills the hole much better. The "D" point and the "TRI" point are similar results to the S. And the LR leaves that goofy angled looking stitch perhaps popular with them sensitive fellas?

If you post which machine you have, most likely someone here will know JUST what to tell you
-
Yeah, I'm in the "just gimme somethin that works" croud here. If a fella makes custom knives, he certainly can set his own price -- no issues from me. I remember that day I was in the auto parts store, the kid behind the counter got a personal call. No hurry, so I told him take his call. His wife, just got her first ever BRAND NEW car. Now there's a buzzer and a warning light going off on the dash... she's freeeeekin out. So what ya do? Call yer husband the auto parts guy, right? "Diagnosed" by asking what the light says... "low tire pressure".... So he asks 'did ya try putting air in the tire?' Now, this is where I'm sitting.... do I REALLY wanna pay several hundred dollars for a "sensor" that tells me to check the tires?@!!#@$! Car dealer won't sell me that model WITHOUT that sensor (dont come that way), so I dont own one. But then, if I won the lottery tomorrow, I'd still be at the fishin' hole with a old pickup truck and a stubborn dog, NOT answering my cheap cell phone ...

You can do that with a simple edge guide. The type you need will depend on the machine you're using. Some mount to the bed of the machine, others mount to the machine head itself. Strange that the machine dealer wouldn't fix you up with what you need. I got mine from a member here. By way of example.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWd4FlRHv-Q

Seems to have veered a bit, to discussing quality and craftsmanship. When considering a name, are we considering craftsmanship, workmanship, and quality to be factors? Cuz if those aren't factors, then the name put on it is pointless and irrelevant. Used to be you had to know something about building principles and building codes to be a carpenter. Now, just buy a saw and a hammer, and pay $50 at the county office for "registration", and you're a "contractor". I always get a 'kick' out of those geniuses buzzing around in trucks that say "licensed, bonded, insured" under a logo of some sort. See, in Iowa, there is NO license for a contractor (electrical one exception) - and the only person needing "bonded" is the one who posts a bond IN LIEU OF insurance, and insurance is passed out to anyone who will write a check. No point in apprenticeship -- the new guy would just be standing around watching the old guy standing around! This is largely due to the govt "creating jobs". See, it took 4 guys 2 days to roof my house (the one I live in). But now there are 7 guys out of work, so we hire them too. And of course, they need a decent wage, so now what cost me $4 now costs me $7, for the same thing. ANd there ya go.... same work done, but at twice the cost, and 7 guys made lazy (er). My wife was - until recently - some kind of fancy-pants at Purina (the pet care division). BUNCH of people have jobs there. I almost said "bunch work there", but that isn't true. Now, I'm not saying a guy has to be covered in muck and ruining his spinal cord to be "at work" (though, hey - work IS a factor in being a man). But at the end of the day, if that entire plant burned to the ground, then a bunch of kitties have to remember how to catch mice - BIG DEAL, SO WHAT?!@! And the state of the union, as they say, is that the kitties WILL figure it out -- and the "men" likely won't figure it out. Just file for occupational disability -- ousted from their "job" through no fault of their own.. blahblah Unemployment. Welfare. I mean, it aint like we're gonna go catch the mouse (actually work) OURSELVES (shame for even suggesting that!). So, yeah -- I would need to see the quality and integrity involved in a piece before i attach a name ...

$8.10 for "A-grade" leather - very nice stuff.
