Don't misunderstand... I got a purdy good scrap pile 'round here too

Self taught is the best way! This way you're not bogged down by somebody else's opinions / quirks / misconceptions. You get to actually LEARN and get EXPERIENCE instead of listening to someone else's (often self serving) poop! GOOD FOR YOU!

Wondering About The Fit
JLSleather replied to cleanview's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
All the video was about was to say that holding a holster upside-down with a "blue" gun means nothing at all. -
Well, the economy of it is a no-brainer. 10 backs is about $1850-1900, depending on weight. Anywhere else, a back is going to run $225-$250 each - so going to HO saves you at least $50 per piece ($500 on a 10-pak), PLUS 10 shipping charges (another $200-ish), PLUS you're getting A grade (which the "retailers" aren't sending, with the exception of Goliger). Now, if you're in a location where it's difficult to control humidity, that might make a case for not buying multiple hides, otherwise ... if you will use 10 or more, best to save your money until you can buy them all at once, if that's what it takes (I cheat.. swipe a card ). Or, if someone else is doing leather - say within 100 miles of you -- maybe get together and 'split' an order (get it.. "split"... leather... uh nevermind..) A guy could drive over and pick up his 5 sides for about what the retailers are jacking up EACH piece.

Probably silly question
JLSleather replied to Mattsbagger's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
See, there's where I got lost. If you added material, then the stitch lines can't be in the "same place".. they would be further apart. I know what I think you meant but if there's 1/2" more leather, then the fit can't be the same. HEre's what I did with the G43... make it 'wrap', and if you've seen that video with the airbrush then you've seen me making a "pouch" -

Okay, lost me again Took me a minute to follow that If you "stretched" the front panel, that would explain why the gun is so far from the stitch line. Couple comments -- I like cardboard for making patterns like Dwight is describing. Manila envelopes (which is where most of us start, since we've been told that) don't allow for thickness, and belly leather stretches too much to be very accurate (though it does allow for thickness). But a regular piece of corrugated cardboard (the 'honeycomb' stuff shipping boxes are made from) work well for that. Kinda roll it and flex it until it's softened up some, and then works okay. Personally, I usually just sketch on graph paper, and when I know I'm 'close', I make one from the same leather I'm going to be using for holsters. If it isn't quite "right", I'm out less than $10... which I'd pay just to not to have to go get the cardboard Graph paper, because if I like the design, but maybe it could move in or out "right in there" for about 1/8", tehn I just move the line over 1/2 of the 1/4" square on teh paper.. and vee oh la. And then I often keep a scan of it (because something ALWAYS happens to the original). Comes in handy when you find that the G19 is the SAME as the G17, but about 12mm shorter (each end). So just bring up the scan of the 17, re-draw the bottom 2 squares higher, and there's yer 19 As for "adding to the front".... coming soon ... Oh, yeah .. 5-6 stitch to the inch is about what I like for 2 layers of 8 oz. -
No reason for me to "take any credit" there... yer show on this one! Lookin' good, too. You coulda used teh "wrap around piece" with the stitched channel - just gotta think the order of operations (I know you likely already did , I'm saying that for the next reader). Lookin' good all over, fellas --- this is the point of those patterns... add yer own style... just a starting point! Now, I gotta catch a mail man and decide how I feel about being called "mechanically economical), which sounds a tad like 'anatomically sparse" Oh,..checkn' later, but how wide did you make the site channel strips?
-
I've had people ask for "no molding in teh trigger" just because they don't like the way it looks after some use, with the guard pulling at the leather fibers.
-
You should be takin' vantage o the discounts... like ... you know -- 10% for UPLOAD A PIC of what you did with a G27 pattern (for example) OR.. like that one where a guy loaned me a BT380 blue gun, and got the postage paid both ways AND a free pattern (this didn't happen, I'm just hopin' out loud here .. )

's'over at cutesy https://www.etsy.com/listing/486424992 Took me a minute there FYI.. teh 45 is 'just a tad' bigger than the 9 (not the same). Aguycould maybe get the 45 into teh holster made for the 9, but that holster wouldn't work for the 9 any more Oh, yeah -- plus the 45 gonna stick out the bottom 3/4" or so ..
-
The G43 STILL IS a popular one -- I really wondered for a while JUS HOW MANY o them things glock made!!@#!! Crazy for a while there ... And I'd say that around here, the most popular models still teh G19, G43, P938, and XDs45
-
Just under 61,000 downloads - and the winner is ... Glock 19 (5,109 downloads)
-
I'm not "determined" to sell it -- that G43 has been sitting around here in a box for about 2 years since teh gun came out and I bought multiples. was actually hoping someone had the BT380 and didn't need it (or even a P238) to trade, if they were going to buy the 43 anyway. But if I need to buy those, then the 43 is okay here, too.
-
I'm gonna go with Alex here.. most of those holsters are running about 6/7 oz (and I've actually seen some like 4/5 oz!) It's that same old tired inside radius/outside radius story I keep on tellin'... the thicker the leather, the wider the bend (which is what Alex said, just different spelling). Personally, I want it INSANELY detailed on the INSIDE.. for grip/friction, but not maybe so highly detailed on the outside - after all the idea is concealment, not ADVERTISING
-
Is the forsale also for swap? I got a rings Glock 43 - never used extra - and would trade for a Bersa Th .380 4...3....2....

Ahh..thanks- now I got ya.I wasn't seeing the "posts where teh slots would be" part. -- gotter now. And yeah, flex is good. As a rule, I make IWB's much more 'shaped' than the OWB's... not just flat, but curved PAST flat... same idea. -
Well, was this reaction a bit severe? Seriously, I see people posting links to web sites and pootube videos all the time... I wouldn't think this that different. In fact, HOW MANY times has someone shown up here, to give us all a link to YET ANOTHER video about something that's been basically done to death And, I've never met her so I suppose I could be wrong - but I guess I've always assumed Johanna was a big girl capable of defending herself herself

Actually, what you describe sounds pretty good! If you're not getting crisp detail, your leather may be either too wet or not wet enough.
-
Oh, crap... that's right. I aint put up a new pattern ALL YEAR
-
Exactly. So tell me again why we're discussing this? I don't buy what I can't see. You don't show me, because you don't want me to buy. Where is the problem? The "pet rock" sold MILLIONS of copies, at $4-8 each. Then there were "imitation" pet rocks. Then after some years, there was a "re-release" of the "original" pet rock I didn't buy any, and I didn't sell any, so... I did recognize that there were "knock offs" and that was largely due to the product being something that anyone could easily duplicate. But I didn't care...
