Most of the scrap around here will be veg tanned, and usually 7/8 oz or 4 oz. From HO "A" hides, or in some cases W/C "standard" drum dyed skirting (split to about 8). At any rate, this is stuff that shouldn't be pitched out, but not what I want to use on my projects, so ... This stuff IS worth having around, or I woulda pitched it. But how many HOURS do I really want to spend going through a box of scrap to find a piece when I could have cut a chunk off a hide in a few seconds @!!#!#$!@! I found a box, I'll get a pic and a weight for the shipping. Seriously, this is not going to be a little envelope

Yeah, I like neatsfoot. There are other products I haven't tried, so I can't swear it's THE one to use. But it works well. I mean lIGHT coat. Like hold a bottle of neatsfoot in yer left hand, project in the right hand, and TALK about oiling it. Not much more than that. When I was new I completely RUINED a piece with too much oil.

Wow.. checked the tracking. Not coming 'til at least Tuesday? Like 7-8 days from NY... did they send it by mule?@!@~!!

As a former too-and-die guy, I've used all manner of 'stuff'. When I made jigs to feed wallboard (the 'conveyor' type thing used at the gypsum plant) they wanted to pay for 1020 cold rolled. Fair enough. When press broke a punch and we needed to get it running quickly, a scrap of O-1 and a lathe take care of that, with the understanding that was a temp fix. And in the end, I use D-2 for everything if I had to pick (A-2 not far behind). These steels not only don't corrode by lunch time like the cold rolled or the oil-hard, but they have a wear resistance that is to be preferred. Now, I'm not a knife maker, and tomorrow I'll be NOT making knives again. Just a guy who is really tired of YEARS of sharpening stuff, and elects to go with what I dont' need to polish daily.

Too bad there isn't a pattern somewhere, like we could all see it, and then some of these die guys could give us a ball-park idea of the money we'd spend having that made. I mean, say like somebody put up a pattern where we could all look at it, and agreed to the free and fair use of it by anyone, then a die guy could - theoretically - say 'that pattern right there could be done for $Xx in Yy weeks in 11pt steel at x/32" precision. Maybe if somebody had a pattern that came without guarantee, then somebody could produce a 'mock-quote" that came with no guarantee. You know, all ballparky like. Oh, hey... there's that loud bald guy... always givin' away free patterns for somethin'. Maybe we could use ona them. Like..." this design right here would be $49.95 .... " Nah... never happen, right? I'm just dreaming here. Not entirely my fault. I have dies that aren't quite what I drew. I have dies which are very much exactly what I drew, but came dull as a butter knife. They seem to ALL come with a wonderful flowery story Maybe this post will be the last in the thread for a long time (?). Call this an invitation to add something relevant and useful to the discussion. If you have a quote (one not set in stone) then post away. If not, then I guess no answer sometimes is an answer? Personally, I've contacted enough people by now that I simply cannot be bothered with another "contact us for a quote" line. In the time I spent on the phone, I could have cut out 1000 parts with an x-acto ... No, hey,... I 'get' it. Nobody wants to be compared any more. Everybody looks good when they're not standing next to someone else, right?

Always got scrap. Always cleaning up (never done). I know some people who can't throw out anything, but I'm not one of em. I save enough scraps for assorted tasks, but always still have some. I'm not talking about stuff 2-finger size, that's already in the trash. Some pieces are more that a square foot. Some with scratches or wrinkles, some cosmetically okay but from teh edge and thus not that firm, etc. I mean stuff that could be used for testing dye / stain colors trying out new finishes setting sewing machine tension and stitch lenght (and thread color against a given leather color) embossing fillers exotic leather backers testing patterns (first dry run only -- if it was firm enough to trust for the pattern, it would be firm enough to use!) chew toy for the dog chew toy for the wife whatever else you think of The leather is FREE, just either pick it up or pay the shipping. Here's the one 'rule'... I want this to go to the new guy. Some you folks been at the leather bench for 10+ years got scrap already.. don't ask for this just to packrat it away with some you already have This not in teh "for sale" area, cuz it aint for sale. There will be more time to time... not gonna "schedule' it. Best place to list? Shortly I'll get a quick picture of what currently needs to go away. If it's been a week since i posted this and you're now seeing it, the leather is gone... somebody took it,OR I pitched it, but it's gone.

Thanks, Boss. I'll tell the wife she was wrong, I DID do something that worked -
Thanks, can we ask what products you prefer? Personal reviews are good. Anybody can write a check and buy an ad.. but let's hear what the people who "been there" (even if they haven't actually been there) think

And while I don't think it's the same issue, I can't be the only one who thinks it's not okay to have wrinkles on there.-- no, not even on the back. -

Whatcha mean by "clean"? You talkin' bout the stitch lines up close? Cuz that's stitchin' BEFORE moldin'. and then a good bonin' tool. -
I have a facebook. Basically just so nobody else can open one and say that they're me. Hey, don't laugh -- I've had it happen. Bout 11-12 years ago I got a call from a lady lives about hour anda half from here... wanted to know when we could start work on her house. And we DID own a contracting business. Seems she had a estimate from "Jeff" for an $8k roof repair. I drove up and met the lady -- nice gal who showed me MY estimate sheet, but that aint my signature. Turns out, somebody had put a logo on a truck, and was driving around with MY software and a portable printer, signing up people for "jobs". We had the office number on there, but always had the boys doing the estimate put their OWN cell phone number on the sheet, so if the home owner had questions about the job, they could call and get someone who already knew that home. Apparently, on this one, the guy forgot to clear the phone number area at the bottom, so the lady called and got ME. I generally wouldnt' travel that far for a job that small, but I told her I'd do it for that price (which didn't leave me rich OR broke), and I'd give her $100 out of myy own pocket if she can get that guy to show up to discuss the job on the day we start Now, somebody is gonna git thinkkni''' hey that's a funny story, but what you telling US fer? Well, honestly, it did happen. And I did create a facebook to avoid that happening again. And it was my turn to fill the page with a bunch of stuff that don't really matter.

See, now, this is good stuff to hear.

Even with many of those being duplicates for me, that's STILL a good deal. Let me know if you change your mind and take PayPal.
-
Ahh.. the good ole days.. when customer service meant giving you what you paid for the first time Glad to hear they got ya fixed up!
-
I should be seeing some of it shortly

Fair enough. I just ordered some smaller stuff which I'd been getting somewhere else.. but found they had the same thing for about half the money (ish). So, we'll see how this goes? I did get an email invoice and a receipt saying my card was billed, so maybe we're 'in the works' now.

That's INSANE. Makes any tooling and designing I ever did look like a kid's toy Nice1! -
Well, that works for folks up that way, so thanks for the info. For myself, at $40/hr + shipping both ways on leather i already paid shipping on, maybe just buy me a piece of the weight I need I really don't need "splitting service", I was just wondering why there were people offering clicking, sewing, design, web site and graphics, but no splitting. Oh, well ....

I never touch the stuff. Somebody sent me 'pinterest' stuff, so I put in a couple of pics. Next thing, I'm getting emails about "pins you might like". WHEN exactly did i ask for that? So down the road, somebody said "check out my blahblahblah instagram", but when I got there it wouldn't show me the pic without signing up, so I NEVER DID see that one That whole "social" thing is just ONE of the many things wrong with hand made crafts these days. Some people could stand to spend a bit less time "marketing" (we used to call it @$$-kissing) and spend that time IMPROVING their skills (or acquiring some). Guess I'm not feelin' the need. And certainly not feelin' it for " increase local traffic to your leather shop ". SAD, really, that there is some truth in all that poop. People DO pay for "followers", which is no matter to me. The sad part is, a bunch of people who are TRAINED over the years not to think for themselves will "follow" that same thing, simply because it looks like "everyone" else is. It's pathetic, but true. I of course am the odd-man-out. For a long time, I didn't own a tv or a couch. People would come in,.. and say (in disbelief and shock) HEY you don't have a couch!. Yeah, I know. I knew it BEFORE you did. They expected a couch... cuz "everybody else' got one. I bought a house 4 miles outside town. Not in the zoo of the rat race, but still get to town in 5 mins if I care to. But not people casually just "happen to be in the neighborhood". So one night, couple gals show up with like a 5-course meal... thought maybe I was "lonely". WHY? Did you see my truck go past yer house? Did yer phone ring? Hey, I like girls,AND I like food, so all worked out there. But do not... like pinterest.... assume that I want you to stop by again when I'm doing something else

Simple enough --- if you're worried about it -- to cut a narrow slot instead of the cut,.. then burnish the slot before folding. That item there, clearly the main concern in kicking them out quickly as possible -- minimizing the work done to it at all turns. I personaly wouldn't want something that uses FOUR layers of veg-leather just to have 4 card slots.

I'd cut a hole and put a window where the tv is. Otherwise, looks very functional.

My new holster
JLSleather replied to compound's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Tha's a LOT of angle adjustment. Stitchin' looks great, too. You could shoot it standing up, you could shoot it sitting down. You could shoot it in the air, or shoot it at the ground. You could shoot it in a box, you could shoot it with a fox.
