Thanks for the advice and it seems that other people use that way of marking/spacing. I also wonder how the lettering turns out the way it does. Joe St

Making Lightbox For Tracing Patterns
Stewart replied to crossvillepappy's topic in Patterns and Templates
What I did was use a glass out of an old picture frame. Cut bottom of box out, taped glass to box, cut hole to put a flashlight that you wear on your head and tape opposite of box. Joe -
If you are making the walls of the circle and lines 1/16 inch wide use Pvc or the conduit that has walls about that thick as a tool. The connecting lines cut however width you want out of the tubing. Connecting lines a flat-headed screwdriver or chisel ground down to 1/16 width. depending the distance between the circles the chisel would make a longer impression. Joe

Cheryl, You got to do what makes a living or providing income. Leather work takes practice of course. Basket weave takes a lot of measurements. Joe. -

Thank you Cheryl. The items that you produce make mine look like throwaways. You also think out of the box as they say. Joe -
Pipe Smokers Belt
Stewart replied to Stewart's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
It does not matter what type of belt you wear when smoking but pants have different width belt loops. Since I retired, I have lost weight and the last belt I made was wider and a heavy buckle. Buckle is a Champion Spark Plug logo (brass) given to me by Champion for outstanding sales. The belt was themed with the parts I have sold tooled in. I started carving pipes a year ago and the other belt was to heavy and I like to tool leather. I put the two together for a theme. I am dyslexic,so all the artful tooling is a no go.If is functional it's ok with me. By the way my wife will not let me do a purse for her. Would hate to see what the theme was . Sorry about large pictures.iit is not a statement of any type the lighter colored pipes ar some of the ones i carved. The pipe that has bowl on top is anther one. Joe -
Finished this Today. Just wanted to share. Joe St.

Finished these and finishing up on the last one . Now to the belt that's about to whip me. It seems that i am stuck on one style of pipe, soooo to the back burner they go. Those make 20+ pipes since a year ago. Think about making a bandoleer or utility belt to hang pipes and accessories. Joe

I have basically the same problem with drawing. I can draw a cure on the right and of object but not on the left hand. side. Example is i am trying to do a ULU knife. To get the contours on the handle about the same, I have to flip the blade blank over an draw. As my work is a hackers job at doing something, I found its the hand flow that maters. In watching my Mother paint and do pencil etchings it seems that she did the main focal point than fill in around. Training hand and eyes to work together and keeping sizes of parts of a drawing similar is another art. If I need the drawing done right I send it to my sister. She inherited that skill. Joe

Well this whole project was bad news from start to finish. The concept was good but the application is not worth it. Put it forward towards buckle, hard to get to front pocket. Towards the back and no way to get rear pocket for wallet. Molding was easier than I thought. installing snaps same. The notch on bottom was the leather buckling when molded. That was a good cut.because of the form of the blade it's hard to get out so ii use my finger to push up on knife. The other good thing is that the off weave matches the off weave of my belt. I t was fluke that i picked the weave.was not thinking about my belt. Fixed the loop holes Joe St Joe

Hi You All, Always wanted a holster for the NAA so having second thoughts about wet forming I put it off Well I took The plunge and It was not hard as i thought it was. Used a shop lamp to dry leather. I did forget to take the bullets out. In the research i done I don't think anyone mentioned to do that. Anyway I need to lengthen the belt hole and finish edges. Joe

Done several like these. Using blade blanks and broken blades. The blade for this came off a filet knife. drilled antler coin and epoxied Joe

It has been awhile but it seems that pipe crafting is a little better than my leather work. The other thing is that i ran out of ideas and relatives. Well not ideas. the other thing that is I have free wood and no free leather. Now I did have to send Luke H. a pipe to calm him down. He is a true leather man and woodsman and friend.
