  1. start anywhere u want except at tip "continus stitch" - Im sure u ment continuous line of stitching, No. Most people just cut off about a ams span (6-8 ft) and splice. guessing u haven't read- Al Stohlman "Art of Hand Sewing Leather" yet, as it answers these and more.
  2. maybe some pics of the cushions would help us to help u?
  3. stitch regulator puck-down (moved a little) foot lifter block-to center end of travel (have plenty of lift) Now have 7/inch Feed motion cam- sounds difficult and expensive? Think I've read comment that Toledo Ind. sewing machine has parts for these machines. I'll get them on ph tomorrow.
  4. "Am I being a stingy old man or am I on-target to politely redirect requests for essentially free time and materials and turn them into offers to teach the person themselves? I don't ask my mechanic buddies to change my truck shocks for free, nor my cattle farmer friends to give me free hamburger. Is everyone but me giving family discounts? Jumping at a chance to do something for free? Don" Normally, family and Close friends I write it off as Christmas, Bday or .... Relatively strangers, hope u have something good to trade if not $.
  5. Ok, I can lookl into some of those. Feed motion cam sounds difficult and expensive? Thought 8/inch was pretty good what should I be going for?
  6. I have a recently aquired Singer patcher and it only has about 1/2 the paint left on it. Does it devalue to go with a non-stock paint job? Otherwise I'm thinking fantasy or nose art. Samples: and since I can't load what might be my #1 choice (sitting lady in red & white 2 piece with the phrase "Do What?" here's the traditional paint job too. I'm looking for similar suggestion - no porn here please
  7. Guess maybe I'm dense/ looking for an easy way, because only turning the gloves just seems to give the same problem only witha different material on the outside. I'll get pics up showing things, till then I'm working on patcher.
  8. OK, i've got it sewing (8spi on 1/8" leather). Next issue may or may not be mostly cosmetic, when I t ook off the cover plates for oiling there seems to be rust on everythng except the cam roller. I'm sure correct amount of rust is 0 but is there a poinnt where I should just live with it or is it automatically take apart and clean? On cleaning I suppose wire brushing followed by naval jelly would be the way to go?
  9. I'll have to try this, if I understand correctly you're saying to turn the fingers in a kind of "short finger" position. I've also got a cheap pair of gloves where the factory bar tacked the liner and I'll post up a pic of one if we still aren't communicating.
  10. Matt T: Are u sharkgirl? this is one of search hits answersyahoo.com/questions/index/qid=2007
  11. good to know that I'm at least on the right adjustment-I'll check on the bottom of foot when I get home tonight. thx for speedy reply
  12. Still have the gloves sitting on shelf... am I missing something in the above reply? Don't I still need to get inside the finger (once the glove are turned - the non lined part) to put a couple stitches through the 2 sides? (Add that this is a floating liner, not one where it's captured in the seams and has pulled loose.)
  13. Ques about Singer 29-4 stitch length and presser foot pressure: I've got the manual out and I'm looking over the top of the machine at a rectangular bar that has a slider w/wingnut at one end of bar and a knurled knob w/knurled locknut toward the other end. Are these the stitch length and presser foot pressure adjustments respectively? Because I can't seem to get machine to feed even though I've screwed down the knob (clockwise) 2 1/2 turns. There are marks on the vegtan and I can see the foot moving forward and back, but it doesn't seem to be getting a grip.
  14. 1. I've seen products w/tension so high it buried the thread (invisible thread) in the leather- obv not somethng u can do w/sunbrella. guess it depends on tension u think thread can take and the "look" u're going for. 2. because I have vert bobin I've never thought of crawling under table w/screwdriver. I have a racheting screwdriver from Stanly or someone that could maybe be reshaped for that small screw, there are rt angle screwdrivers as well that could be reshaped. Be aware these have very short reach.
  15. At least that's what I'm expecting to see when I get there. I know that sititch length is important to check on these - with any particular thickness leather? Other things to check? Is there such a thing as long arm or big bobin in this generation? and how would I recognize it? IF there is a big bobin is it worth paying more for? For some strange reason seller says she wants to keep the stand - how much to deduct for that? Thx
  16. I've read a thread about tanning and some articles and they talk about damage to the skin if left untreated for even a shjort time. will the damage go beyond loosening the hair? is there aa timeline on how much damage and uses that can be made of it? above ques if skin has been scraped and salted? what do people use for the scraping anyway? should I grind down something witha special profile? Brain, Bran, Veg, Alum tanning what are the + & - of each method? Brain-some swear by, but what of u don't have Brains available? are there other methods? can I just stretch the skin on a framework in an open shed for drying or is something more needed? will my neighbors complain about the smell? Is ther a "tanning for idiots" book avail?
  17. I'm going to bump this with couple questions "green skin" - does this have a firm definition? I've read this thread and other articles about tanning and they talk about damage to the skin if left untreated for even a short time. Will the damage go beyond looseing the hair? Is there a time line on how much damage and uses that can be made of it? Above ques if the skin has been flensed and salted? What do people use for flenseing anyway? Can u just stretch the hide on a frame in an open air shed or is something more needed? Will my neighbors complain? more than couple ques, but hope they aren't too dumb from someone who has never done this

    Looking For A Head

^^^ cute... from PB: sculpted bear head sale-$199.99
  19. I asked this ques of several knowlegable people when I wanted white for motorcycle leathers and the answer was you have to get drum dyed or settle for what passes for white from other sources.
  20. Sorry, I was having problems posting. this was 2 questions I've got my dye (spirit) thinned to about 10-20%...Fiebing's Dye Lt. Brown Trying to lighten up the coverage of red...Tuscan Red acrylic paint due to irregular area(s) dipping isn't possible
  21. Brushing my dye (spirit)on - I'm thinned to about 10-20% but to get the color evened out I'm having to apply 3-6 coats and this is making the color darker than I want. I read thread about daubing tip of brush first but problem is also overlaping brush passes. Pink!-when what I want is thinner, transparent Red. Is answer to shade with black or should I be trying something else? Thinking of using Lexan or acrylic to glue my walletbacks to - wil lthe solvent in rubber cement affect them?
  22. I've got my dye (spirit) thinned to about 10-20%, but wind up with darker than wanted because I have to make 3-6 passes to get the color evened out. Trying to lighten up the coverage of red I wind up with pink. Should I be adding black to make it a darker red or maybe the compliment of tan?
  23. thanks for your replies: countyholster-I'll admit I hadn't thought about game travelboards, as I want something I can sketch, carve, tool, etc. on. Wonder how that would holdup? MikeCahill- hadn't thought of mono-pole design.
  24. I googled mechanics belt too: www.mechanicsbelt.com looks like there are two styles, since u ask about skiving yours must be the hidden buckle style not the double prong? As long as all it's doing is holding pants up I'd treat it like normal belt.
