  1. what good is your hand made maul, if you cannot use it. What the hell did you make it for? It's a tool, and yes it will take a beating. That's what it's for. It's not to "JUST LOOK NICE AND SET ON THE MANTLE" Use it. Or make it a 'WORK DE ART' and keep it pristene condition and look for another, "less gentile tool" to use. Kevin
  2. Hi Philippe! I bought some skins from you a couple years back. Not bad skins! I used for inlays on a couple pieces. I thought your price at $40, not bad, but on the edge. For $60, they better be WAY larger, are they? Kevin
  3. HI MIke. Where are you in Illinois? I'm in bloomington and would like to get a group together every once in a while to discuss leather work. I've got a friend near Urbana that wants to make boots. So do I. And yet I started with Belts and Holsters. BTW, I'm not that good at doing them, but I am a good critic, and I slept in a Holiday Inn one night. LOL

  4. I made my earlier comments on your first, first piece. It was a good, maybe really good first piece. But like Ferg says the second was not up to what the standard is you want to achieve. The shield was pretty O.K. Margins a little erratic. The border stamping started, stopped, ended, started again? Basket stamps must have been an after thought to fill blank space, or not a previous thought? Shell stamps here and there with no pattern. Try getting some hobby putty and make your pattern on it, first. You can just roll it up and try another if you don't like it. If you do..put it on leather. Again great start and you have a future doing this stuff. BTW, I like the holster pattern for that weapon. Good job with the pattern. Kevin
  5. I don't have an index, but GOOGLE ...youtube... then "knife sheath making".. Several videos on HOW TO. Try that for a really good start. Kevin
  6. Hi Mike and Welcome! You'll love it here, as reading and visiting is also addictive. That is one impressive first project and you should be proud. I wouldn't even post my third. Give me a shout sometime. Illinois worker Kevin
  7. Do not try to be a pioneer. The definition is..people with arrows in there backs.. But, buy a Servo from one of the dealers here on the forum. They stand behind, to the side, and in front of the machines. You also get FREE follow-up on questions, Then again you could go to free-bay or craigslust and get something good..or knot! Experience is... trading your dollars to someone who has it and when done, you have their experience, and they have your dollars... Just buy the right stuff and be done with it! Kevin
  8. I think this to be pinned, and stopped! The ultimate site for shops. Kevin
  9. You just entered a subject that is a BIG CAN OF WORMS! IT HAS NO.. ONE answer, OR A HUNDRED ANSWERS. Do you want to stand or sit? If you stand how tall are you? Two people?... how tall is the other person. Are you going to cut leather? ..Or tool? Or glue and shape? Belts?, saddles?, boots? bags maybe? Do you want to build, or buy? That includes legs as well as tops. Do you want it permanent, or to move around the shop, maybe, or even relocate to somewhere else? A picture of "What Tandy uses" that you refer to, might help. Just some thoughts on your question. Kevin
  10. I think Biggun laid out for you the things you need to decide, BEFORE you can go to market with anything. It's called a business plan. See if where you live, or nearby, is a SCORE mentor. Senior Corp Of Retired Executives. They will be happy to help you develop a basic business plan, and then, later a marketing plan. All for the nominal fee of...FREE. They are an affiliate of the Small Business Administration. Check with your local Chamber of Commerce to find them. BTW, you handle says something about bow hunting??? How about you take Sylvia's idea and do something you know about????? Just some thoughts. Good luck! Kevin
  11. I don't think Wiz was saying it's worth any single dollar amount of money. He simply stated a fact that there is an appropriate place to put it. That' all I saw in his post. Keep it..sell it. Your choice. Kevin
  12. Nae! Not me! I still have the splitter and I only dunk sewing machines now, and keep im all. Bet that shipping was a problem!!! If I ever ship you something, I promise it'll be clean. and DRY! Thanks BTW for some great tools. I just got my American Knife and it is perfect. Just like the other great tools. Quit selling me stuff, my wife says! Kevin
  13. I had the same situation when I started tooling. I bought a BEARMAN mall (maul?). He is here on the forum. Helps alot when the tool is as good as the work you WANT TO DO! I got the white 18 oz. first, as a general mall (maul?) and then added the 24 oz. black, a year later, as my second. Never have regretted those purchases. Though, I have many other lessor quality tools I regret buying.! I also know I have a great resale market here on the forum when I retire in say..100 more years. LOL. Grandpa Kevin
  14. When you get to a dime, be sure to instruct me on that one..I can't wait to here this!! Just keep going, this is good stuff. Kevin
  15. Hey Eric. With shooters info you can now cut a cheap wood block/two and not have to buy a real mag. Nice eh?? I really love this place! Kevin
  16. HAHAHA! Sorry Mark for your pain. It just reminded me of when I bought a similar machine a couple years ago, an American instead of a USM. I had to chuckle. Same thing, no matter what I did. Just keep cleaning, oiling and I hate to say..WD-40. I personally don't like to use it much, but the s8=5576&*^%$t sometimes works. I have read since a good bath in diesel fuel will speed the process. But with the price of fuel..maybe a new machine is cheaper???? LOL You can ..eventually loosen it up and yours will adjust better than mine. It's much newer and better, but I'm still chuckling. Sorry Kevin
  17. The topic just about says it all. Just want WORKING machine, could use just head??? Since I've switched mostly to servos, have clutch motors laying around and could? buy a new table I guess.
  18. Use pete's method. On the top I use a metal yardstick and on the bottom an old wooden one. Like mentioned, leave the top back the thickness of the leather and "c" clamp together. Great little easy JIG. Kevin
  19. Just put it in the oven and turn it on. Take it out before it burns. Alcohol.. Drink three fingers of Crown ///////////////////Royal. The leathers done now. Kevin
  20. Do not forget the "anglaise". Many times I wonder what shoes/boots were made with these tools. Who used them, and the memories of those gone before. Always use the tools the way others did, before you and me. Thanks, TROX Kevin
  21. Sent you two messages PM. Would like the post machine. Serious buyer! TODAY.
  22. See if you can take it apart. Many of these older horses would allow for the legs to come off. The "jaws" also could be lifted off. That makes shipping a lot different. All the PARTS lay down and the box is not so big. Just a thought to help. And yes, it is a stitching horse, and a good one.
  23. Jake! Hello, you live in tree country! Go get a leaf..great pattern.. those darn leaves. think maybe flattened they will give you ideas???? Kevin Tight Stitch to You.
  24. Yes, it is worth selling. It could be $25..it could be $100, but it is an art piece. Do not just trash it. Keep the memory going.
