    See edit above, you could also use a nut inside the chuck if you don't have any tubing.

    Can you drill out the snap? If not, you can put the threaded portion inside something like a small rubber fuel line, place inside a drill chuck and hold a file to the head as the bolt spins in the chuck.

    I learned how to stitch the Mexican Round Braid from this video. Chief has other excellent video's on lacing but I'm partial to the MRB.

    Belly leather is prone to that. I also pre treat with neatsfoot oil and don't use belly leather.

    I don't think you will want a polishing wheel in close proximity (at least a few feet) to where you are working with leather, they throw a lot of compound and debris. A variable speed drill press might be another option for you, I use a small bench mounted drill press for burnishing and sanding. I keep metal sharpening and polishing separate.

    An oak or other hardwood branch would make several mallets, and the scouts could make them easily. Different diameters and they could choose their own.

    I bought one of those as well from Tandy ,it's well made but I wouldn't buy the same one again because you can't get all the dies you need.

    For a wood grain finish you can wet a piece of plywood to raise the grain, let it dry and then press it into cased leather and the pattern will transfer.

    You could use a varnish or urethane.
