  1. There's one on eBay from a good seller - here I would love some feedback on it. I've been contemplating a buy for a long time.
  2. Does anybody have any experience with modern Blanchard or Dixon irons? At the moment I'm considering ordering a full set from Jeremiah Watt. I would like to see some in the flesh, but living in Denmark that is probably completely impossible. However what I've heard Watt tools are good. I'm mostly using Tandy punches, and of course they're awful, but they've been getting the job done so far. However I have some vintage Dixon ones and they're way better. But unfortunately I can't buy from the past all the time, so I would like quality set from a reputable maker.
  3. Mine looks a bit different than the one in the clip. However, it's basically the same. The blade is mounted between a series of discs that decide the strap width. I'll post some pics, when I find the time. I forgot to add that I bought mine through a guy who emptied the estate of a saddler in Walsall along with some other English tools.
  4. I have that strap cutter. I haven't really used it yet. I bought it as a part of a tool lot, so I can't comment on the usability, However I think it would be quick to use, if you're doing a bunch of straps in one width, but it isn't quick to adjust to a different width
  5. Those are amazing. Thanks for sharing your collection and don't let vultures like Tor and Bruce ;-) get any of your tools. Donate them to a worthy cause. Like me.
  6. The problem with most European/British edgers is that they'll never be as sharp as the American. Sad but true. However I think one of your edgers is double sided, so if you pull it/jerk it the iron will come out of the handle and reveal a secondary beveler. The single creasers are mostly used without a ruler or any type of guide. Just a steady hand and practice.
  7. I've become sufficient at sharpening and honing, but I'm still at a beginners level. I don't have that many problems keeping the knife in the same angle and I can quite easily get my knives sharp enough to go through 6mm veg tan. However I'm using DMT diamond stones, which are fairly aggressive and when I go from the 1200-ish grit to honing on the strop, I find that I need something with a higher grit, as it's very hard removing some of the small scratches. What would be a good grit number for the step after 1200 but before stropping? And can you recommend a specific stone/brand etc. Ps I know that DMT offers a 8000 grit and I would like to purchase that one, but it's very expensive in Europe.
  8. I'm using linen thread from Barbour, Somac, Hoogen and Crawford. Fil au chinois is nice but too expensive.
  9. There's an American company called Ronso. They make a braided thread very similar to Tiger thread and just as good. I can't remember where and when I bought it, but I have two large spools of it, so it must have been good. I'm a linen addict so it's just taking up space in the drawer now
  10. Interesting. I'm always a bit apprehensive when buying something from China (sorry, but I'm being honest here), but I'm hoping that someone is a bit braver than I am and buys it and then shares his or hers experiences.
  11. So I saw these clamps in a shop here in Denmark, that bought them directly. My first impression was; WOW! They're so well made and made of beautiful and solid materials. And the details are great - like the magnetic needle holders. BUT then I started wondering, and I think I concluded one thing - a big problem about them. I may be wrong though. The curve is too big. It should taper towards the end where it holds the subject. It could easily be hard getting ind with the awl. I'm having a tough time explaining what I mean, but I think it should be more narrow and tapered. That being said I would still consider buying one, They're NICE!
  12. I've seen some here in Denmark. There's a slight pull up to it and it's very uneven in texture, as if the leather has been creased purposely. I think it's impossible to find any urban camo. So I would get some dye at get to work on some natural veg tan. If it's only watch straps it might be possible, as the surface is very small.
  13. OurJud, The bigger the number the finer the thread thus making it thinner in most cases. Unless it's a 12 ply thread (if they exist...) Most ready made (twisted and waxed) linen thread is of the weight 18, but it comes in all sorts of weights like 20, 35 etc I reckon 18/3 would be good for your wallets, unless you want it to be a bit coarser. But it all depends on your SPI (stitches per inch) - longer stitches don't look very good with a thin thread and thick thread doesn't go too well with small stitches.
  14. Hallo Walter. Thanks for your input. I'll definitely try to get some samples from Emme Leder. The Zeugleder sounds interesting. Unfortuantely her trip has been shortened from three days to one day, so she won't have time to do any shopping for me. Which is probably fine anyways. In fear of going completely off topic, I was simply wondering about one ting. An We've touched the subject before. The Swiss military and their goods. Do you know, where you buy the surplus stuff (like bags, rucksacks and tool rolls)? I was considering a road trip to Switzerland just to buy up bags and other stuff from the Swiss army, but I wouldn't know where to find it. Thanks and sorry about going totally off topic.
  15. Walter, my girlfriend is going to Basel to attend some kind of jewelry fair (she's going as a journalist) and I was just wondering if there were any good leather related shops in Basel that I could send her to? She sometimes works with me, when I have larger orders, so she has some knowledge and I would trust her with my money.
  16. I have a belt sander and polishing set up already. But I would like some diamond sharpening stones. What grits should I be buying? Oh, and does anybody know of a good UK or European source?
  17. I don't mean to take over your thread, but how does Barry's size numbering compare to Tandy's edgers? (alternatively to Dixon or Geo Barnsley)
  18. I just started working in a leather shop here in Denmark. Actually the one I mentioned in the previous post. Somehow I ended up accepting a job offer from them. Long story short. We have Tiger thread in stock and in some different colours and probably thicknesses too - I can check up on it, if some of you would be interested in it.
  19. I think you can use some pieces of wool felt crammed together if you put them on a drill.
  20. HAHA - That's nice. If you make another, please make a step by step pictorial or video of how you made that kitchen knife into an edge beveler.
  21. There's this guy making these straps. He sells them in steel. For the love of God, I can't remember his name. But they're called frogs, and that might help you in the right direction.
  22. There's a shop here in Denmark that had some rolls of tiger thread in stock last time I was there. I'll gladly check if they still stock it and try to find out more about this - apparently Danish - company, Julius Koch . I'm not a fan of tiger thread myself. I prefer linen. However from experience I think Ronso thread (from the us) stitches very similar to tiger thread.
  23. I'll look in my mess and see if I can find some samples of goatskin and calf leather from France. Very nice, supple, thin, delicate and totally useless for what I'm doing right now - which is mostly belts and bags. But if I were doing finer leathergoods I would order from some of these tanneries
  24. The other day I finally decided to buy a press. I don't use rivets or snaps all that much, but when I do, it's often a hassle. Furthermore I recently moved into a workshop in a building that houses some offices as well, and I've promised them that I'll try to reduce the noise as much as I can. So a press is needed. Of course I turn to leatherworker for advice and of course I come across something useful. I'll pick up a setter and a lot of dies, so I'm completely set for the future! Thanks, Sylvia and everyone else.
  25. Les, did you ever find the time to drop by and see what the new George Barnsleys/Woodware Rep were up to?
