  1. wow - "deadly looking" I can think of a few people with a bad habit of wiping there nose on there sleeve that I would like to give this for them to wear. Break that habit in a heartbeat. looks good
  2. my best guess Ray would be if you are using the machine to sew thin stuff - sany canvas or thin leather it is to keep the thread from draging the material up with the needle. as I noticed the Toro that Johanna has - the presser foot is pretty "open" not like a "regular sewing machine" Oh and I had a thought on how to keep your machine from going "light speed" when you don't want it too put a block of wood under the pedal so that it can only depress so far and no more. Built in speed control.
  3. While I am not disagreaing with the issue of you signing this case or any other. They are your product you can do what you want. I wonder if your Troll would have been as "upset" if you had signed it something like -- John Barton Studios or somesuch something that indicated that you didn't do all the work with your own two hands. just another thought for the discussion
  4. or -- when they look at your work are only willing to pay for the Material COST that you have in it. NOTHING for your time or talant. Sure the dollhouse stuff I used to make and sell were next to nothing in the material cost departmant (my big thing was macrame and I used sewing thread -- two dollars a spool - basicly next to nothing cost wise) But the TIME I put into things -- I had one owl wallhanging that I put 12 HOURS in to knot it up and it was maybe 3 inches long. I had someone offer me 50 CENTS for it. after all it was the size of a keyfob and that's what they paid for them at the flea market. at the dollhouse shows I felt I was pushing it at 25 dollars (In 1980 this was a LOT) But it was a pattern for one you could hang on YOUR wall - knot for knot the worst though was when I saw a "real one" at a craft show for 5 dollars - far less then the cost of the cords in the thing. Of course your TIME and TALANT mean nothing because after all they can buy it at X-Mart for less. I also see this at SCA events - people are not willing to pay more than "flea-market price" for anything. Oh and then there is the other mindset of the person who thinks that every piece of crap they own in the house is worth a lot of money cause it is "antique" -- this is called the Antique Roadshow Syndrome And is a real pain to deal with as well. (take my sister - PLEASE - she still thinks that every piece of stuff that mom or dad touched is worth gold)

    camp stools

that's ok - I want to do one of them too. I am also thinking about just taking a piece of board and making them little tables put a cleat on the bottom of the board to catch the frame of the seat. Mnnnnn.... could do both - replace the seat with canvas and make a board for the top -- twofers
  6. It's about time you show up....I was ready to sic the dogs on you. the folder you NEED to post the folder Mariassa (my SCA name, for the rest of you)
  7. opps sorry I guess most of those old machines look alike. thanks for correcting me
  8. man that looks like the OLLLLD one that Johanna has in her basement - try PMing her
  9. that pretty blue painters tape works quite well on my REGULAR sewing machine so did clear tape and a marking pen - -put clear tape down, mark it - cover with another piece of tape to keep marks off of your material but the important part is watching the needle for me too. and keeping foot off of the "accelorator" when you don't need it there.
  10. what -- you don't have a fancy dancy gaget for that too

    camp stools

Thanks Ray -- I never thought about rivets. I was thinking of punching holes and wraping ip around the frame and lacing it on. and that would be a "campy" stool in my book if you make it with pink crushed velvet. giggle

  16. Hi all Was out garage saleing today and found two "reallllllly" old camp stools the canvas tops are rotted off - mostly but the frame is solid (I hope) - and they were 25 cents each I know I could replace them with some canvas that I have around here ---- but has anyboudy replaced this with leather and what 'thickness' did you use? (and yes Ray, I am still going to make a tri-stool, but you can never have too many places for people to sit, you know?or use as a foot stool)
  17. Well Ray you could always leave instructions that your piece of stone be used for you marker. after all you have been together for a lot of years - why not make it permanant? >ducking and running now<
  18. I know that you only get one chance Jo, that is why I am going to do the design on graph paper and do a pricking through the leather (theh "doner coat" is really quite thin and I can go through it with a sewing pin) and hopefully just have to "follow the dots" kind of sewing. and Man is that machine sweet. I think in a little time I could figure out how to get it to do the curvy stuff without marking up the leather. Just before the thread went all wonky I was doing better. Part of it is that it is soooo much heavier to run than any home machine -- turning the fly wheel is not easy. But an INCH of leather WOW (If you find it missing some day - don't look here - >shifty eyes< nope not here --- Like I could move the thing up the steps and out of the house)
  19. To Infinity and Beyond? God - What a ride. Can I go again? I really haven't thought too much about this one What makes you bring this all up Ray - feeling some age?
  20. don't know if this book would help or not but there is a section on horse barding in it -- good book for reenactment if you can find one. http://www.amazon.com/Tailors-Pattern-Book...a/dp/0896762343
  21. Yes John - I mean needle, thread and hands --- no machine Well at least I know it can be done and some of you have done so. that helps....If you know a thing CAN be done, you know that YOU can do it. at least that seems to work for me...... sometimes not for the best, but I try
  22. While I love the silk ribbon embroidery - it is too late for the time frame I "play" in (600 to 1600 AD) But boy was that vest pretty (and it might be a projet for another day - ribbon - I gots ribbon) thanks for the link
