  1. but it is not hard to learn -- you can get going in an afternoon..... Oh and RAY --- I'm bad --- really really bad.......Grins and Giggles
  2. BUT RAY..... You didn't make a pair of turnshoes with two left feet You made TWO turnshoes for those one legged Pirates out there....... Be careful with the Kumi stand -- It can get addictive. a good book to get is Jacqui Carey's beginning Kumihimo -- It has a new name now but if you Google her website you can get the latest and greatest (and she is in the UK as well) It's not too expensive and takes you through all the steps "with pictures" (waiting to see that leather jewlrey)
  3. Well Ray if you want a "heavier stand" look up some of the Kumihimo sites and look for a Maurdai (and hold your breath at the price a good one will be between 1 and 2 hundred dollars -- http://www.braidershand.com/marudai.html) However you can also make them out of an old round stool..... just drill a hole in the center of the seat (about 2 inches is good) The deal is that the bobbins are weighted and that bag in the center of the stand is about half of the weight of all the bobbins put together (less weight a stiff braid - more weight a loose braid) Kumihimo can be very relaxing if you have a pattern you don't have to think too much about. (I've got this darn "right/left" confusion going on a lot of times) have fun.....
  4. The papers in the pic are pattens for different braids. This was a craft that the Samuri's armor was laced together with Lanyard braiding is a decendent of it. so many of the patterns that you use for leather braiding "look" like what comes off the stand. The stand itself is my design, the only drawback I have is the post fittings. (tops of soda bottles) and the lack of the little containers for the bobbins. (One Touch Ultra Test strips) they hold "just the right amount" of pennies for weight.

    Pizza

Johanna still has it -- I gave her all of the "extra" kitchen stock in the house..... I really didn't need plates for 30 people for just me.
  6. Well I think I got it round about way but here it is
  7. well DRAT (and a few other words that a Lady shouldn't repeat) can't get the silly pic little enough for the machine to up load..... I'll see what I can do about that sorry
  8. Hi all UKRay was after me the other day about me not being on the forums so much... well I am busy getting ready for a Newcomer's Seminar (www.SCA.org) for our Medieval group. one of the things I will be doing is teaching Kumihimo (Japanese Braiding) and to do that I had to make stands for the students. Well not having the time or the skills (*cough*money*cough) to make real wood stands. Here is what I came up with. Foam core and soda bottles and for the bobbins - a friend gave me a slew of One Touch Ultra test strip containers.
  9. That is rich.... Poor man will be stuck in medocrity for the rest of his life.

  11. Hi Ray Sounds like you have a good start to a show....(how big is that bald spot by now???? >grin<) about the judging -- can you just block an hour or so off of the demo times for the judges to all get together and judge all at once? Maybe early in the morning? Judging over coffee and doughnuts? (feeding judges is a Very Wonderfull Thing) Is this more than a one day event? You could have the entries in place the first day - judge sometime during that day and then put ribbons on them the next morning. If you have a "public day" you could charge a pound or two to get in the door. (for a first show I don't think a would charge more than that) Of course that would mean that you would have to put a >gasp< time limit on WHEN the silly things show up. But, if you are giving -- cash -- away it might get them in the door in the morning.... Right now I am begging classes for an SCA Newcomer's Seminar. 36 spots - 25 teachers - 32 classes, plus a bunch of dance classes (the site has a third floor "real ballroom") -- I'm proud of me..... (My hair is getting a little thin getting the various "tracks" lined up and not all at the same time.) good luck
  12. look for "hair sticks" of course you can always do the dowel stick thing or use chop sticks.....
  13. Yes -- A girdle pouch was the "pocket" of the day
  14. Try making a thick "pad" (and solid, not just one or two layers of towel) out of some old towels - put the concho "pretty side down" on the towels bang away. Works for rinestones on fabric - don't know about leather stuff

  16. ok here is one ? ? ? duh moment When I asked for the "latest posts for the last week" it gave me 200 + posts (more or less) When I clicked for the 2nd page it went back to the last 24 hours...
  17. Tashabear - I guess the guys think that they are being "different" and soooo right by putting on a kilt- who are we to rain on their parade? mmmmmm - manly men in kilts are almost as good as manly men in tights......(I don't know WHY guys refuse to wear tights when they go to the pool in a speddo) although the 400 pound guy at Pennsic wearing a loincloth was a bit much. (No tan either - I hope he got the sunburn of his life. some people SHOULD wear more clothes) Ray - ;-P~~~~~
  18. Bruce - everytime I tried to go anywhere - the durn thing went into "everthink" and then just stopped responding altogether. and if I did get it to go past the first page I had to sign in again and then it went into "everthink" and stopped responding altogether..... as I said it could just be settings in MY machine.
  19. As of this afternoon it still didn't like my Internet Explorer Opera is working though..... Of course the IE problems could be at my end, too. I have had issues with it before. till a friend came over and "slapped it around some"
  20. Fianally got back on - with a different OS - something is going on in Internet Explorer on my machine.....grrrrr Anyway - Ray a kilt NEEDS to have the nice kilt hose and the low shoes How else is a girl supposed to "appreciate" a well turned leg if they cover it up with a boot? besides if you are going to go in a costume you might as well go all the way and do it right. Otherwise you sort of look like that guy in the Star Wars Stormtrouper outfit wearing sneakers. The rest of the kit may be dead on right - but there are those sneakers with the "swoosh" on the side......
  21. kilts look silly with boots - my opinion I am in the Society for Creative Anacronism (www.sca.org) and see a LOT of kilts the guys wearing them with boots just look like they forgot half their kit.j but if you are just going to make spats you could get (burn me now gang) naugahide from the sewing store and fuss with a pattern till you get it the way you want and then go get leather and make them up.
  22. And our little corner of the "Known World" (SCA) is going in for plastic scales right now Cool color combos are possiable.....
  23. so they are using the hides of the Naga now - right? *ducking and running*
  24. A HOOBAH from the Midrealm..... I want. So what are your duties - New Baronial Arts and Science Champion (ours has to make a project for the Barony)
  25. for your business how about "On the Edge" skates are on "edge" a lot of bikers live on the "edge" of life and if you do purses and the odd whatnot you are on the "edge" of your normal business. just a thought and worth what you paid for it......
