I may need assistance in setting a line 24 snap for someone.......a simple job for someone who has the right tools. Anyone from Mechanicsville MD??

I use 8-10oz leather for keepers, and shove that lever up to 8 SPI and the results are "keepers".

My wife's aunt found this in a house she just moved out of in Fla.....she can't share any info about where it came from except it"s been "stored up for a loooooong time, at least 40 years". It looks like crock to me....maybe lizzard?? I don't know. I've seen embossed crock at Tandy and it of course lays flat....this is pretty curly/wavy...about 34" long and 9" at it's widest point. I plan to do something with it, haven't figured out what yet.....just wondered what I have here...... Watcha think?

A Really Big Belt
Rayban replied to steelhawk's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I can get two rows of stitching around a size 45" belt with one bobbin, so one around a size 75 should should be no problem. -
Thanks again....had a nice talk with them on the phone and it looks like they will be a good source for some hard to find hardware.

Thanks! I'll be giving them a call later today.

What Sewing Machine Do You Use?
Rayban replied to Sixer's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I love my CB3500.....for the stuff you mentioned, I doubt you'll ever need more than the 9" arm. -
I made mine like this: I started out with a handful of rusty nails. Bought a gallon of white vinegar....the cheap Kroger brand. I poured the nails into the jug and left it out in the back patio where it got plenty of sun, and just forgot about it for a couple weeks. when the vinegar is dirty looking, soups done.

Very good review on your initial experience with HH....glad you are one to just dive in and see for yourself what all the talk is about. Some of those marks you show, I'm not so sure they are actual range, character, or "spur" marks.....looks like they may have been scuffed up after the tanning process. You have to remember that after these "strips' are cut away from the shell, they are thrown into a heap to be hauled off and sold by the pound...probably not handled with much love. I get quite the thrill when I get one full of the figuring that you show......try dying it tan or lt. brown, finish in Resoline and watch it really pop out. Have fun with it.....kinda tough to form/mold to make it look like Kydex.....but on some holster it really does well.

Stitches Per Inch On Gun Belts
Rayban replied to Kcinnick's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I do 6 spi on the belts, same as I did when I hand-stitched everything. For the keepers I do 8 spi. -

Most Common Gun Belt Size Question
Rayban replied to steelhawk's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Based on a quick look at the list of orders I've had since April, I would make it 40"....there is BY FAR more 39, 40, 41 on the list than any other size. -

Horsehide, Took The Plunge
Rayban replied to mrfixit's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Heads up on gluing flesh to flesh...best to rough up the surface a bit with coarse sandpaper....and even then it's been a challenge to me. I don't believe it's my glue or technique.....when I glue horse flesh to cow flesh I get a really good bond.....then go back to horse to horse....not so good. I've seen the edges of belts start separating after only a few days.....then go to a cow liner, and problem solved. It's been a real head scratcher for me. -

Is A Groove Line Necessary?
Rayban replied to Kcinnick's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I've found that when your groove is in perfect sync with your edge guide, the result can be a thing of beauty, but it's risky, especially when stitching two rows on a belt as I do a lot. -
When I brought my 441 clone home, we broke it down in three pieces......I got it home in my little Buick Century.....the head fit nicely on the front passenger side floor (although mines a 9" arm), the table in the trunk, and the pedestal on the back seat.

Have you tried Zack White? I just got one in from them that I can get 60" straps out of...they are not always that long but I've been having good luck with them. I can always make up to a size 42 belt with the strips they send me. Their strips are usually pretty clean too. Other suppliers I've gotten them from have nicks and scratches in them, not totaly a bad thing, we call them spur marks, right? But most customers prefer them to be free of them.
