Well that a clever idea. Would it work better to slip it in from the top rather than the bottom?

Hi all, Just got my rein rounder down and want to do a rolled bridle. Anyone got approximate measurments on the width of the strap and sewing line for finished diameter size. I know they are approximate as it depends on oz of leather used and how much you thin it where you roll it, but just wanted a ball park on where to start. If not, I guess it is time to play with scraps and experiment...

Best Leather For Lining Saddle Accesories?
BevJones replied to 15mules's topic in Saddle and Tack Accessory Items
Frankly, I like oil tan, its easy to clean and holds up well. I don't know much about tanned horse hide. -
I have bought their best Hermann Oak sides and shoulders, I always ask for very clean, and that has been what I have received. I am very happy with Springfield leather.

Dale Chavez Saddle
BevJones replied to justken's topic in Saddle Identification, Restoration & Repair
I have had the very lovely experience of repairing them with those nails as well. What fun. Hope you know I am being a tad sarcastic. I also made saddlebags to match one and had to make one side quite a bit different as the back of the cantle was off. Customers think they have a high end saddle and after working on a few, I am not impressed. -
Saddle maker John M Paul Rockford
BevJones replied to BevJones's topic in Saddle Identification, Restoration & Repair
I am posting as I had a few people email me asking about this as they too had saddles made by John Paul. Well, I had a pleasant surprise today. A gentleman had seen this post and called me. He had the pleasure of working with John Paul in the late 1960' early 1970's. He was 18 at the time and he thought John Paul was in his mid to late 80's at that time. He said he was a custom saddlemaker in Rockford, IL and his shop was attached to his house, located somewhere north of Auburn Street and about 40 blocks from a factory (I didn't catch the name). Said he was a wonderful kind and helpful man that built beautiful saddles. I guess John Paul would have been around 40 when he built my friends saddle in 1924. He built them well as it is now about 88 years old. I now have a little more to go by...Thank you for the info Mr Russell...you made my day. -

Beautiful job! I really like the design. -
Small Purse
BevJones replied to volpert's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Why not make both and make the strap detachable, then she has the option of shoulder strap, short strap or no strap. Straps are cheap to make but the added versatility makes it more marketable. -
Tooled Panel For The Lc & Sj Sep/oct Issue Cover.
BevJones replied to hidepounder's topic in Floral and Sheridan Carving
Got my copy of the journal last week. Loved the cover. I will have to send for your book. Are you teaching any classes at the 2013 Sheridan show? Would love to take one from you. -
Holy Cow! I just fell off my chair. Hope I am as talented as you some day. Beautiful work and you are not a leather worker....you are an artist that works with leather!

My First Knife Sheaths
BevJones replied to siegeandspike's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
You are off to a great start. Real nice work. Only suggestion I have that a saddlemaker gave me at the Sheridan show last May was to wet both sides of your stitching. Then take the edge of a glass slicker and run it over the stitching. It closes the holes and flattens the stitching and gives it a beautiful finished look. It works really well and has improved the look of my work. Keep up the good work and looking forward to seeing more. -
Holster For Raging Bull
BevJones replied to BevJones's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thanks everyone. My next one will be for a 1911. Going to do two textures of leather. Picked up some beaver tails from Sheridan Leather Outfitters so it should be fun. -
Hi all. Had a customer ask me to make a holster for his Taurus Raging Bull 454 Casull with an 8.5 inch barrell. Tried to talk him into a crossdraw shoulder guide type holster as this thing is a small cannon. Still insisted on a holster for his belt. I made it like a buscadaro with the back (is this called an apron?) so when he gets tired of his britches falling around his ankles and consents to a shoulder holster... I have some leather to attach to. I think its just a show piece anyway.....

Airbrush is best for large pieces, otherwise I like Fiebings oil dyes and use a trimmed pad of sheeps wool. I alsways get streaks and blotches when I use daubers.
-
Do not line with a dyed split suede, they can sometimes bleed as well. You may want to line with a 1.5 - 2 oz veg tan or pigskin.
