Harley Wallet + Name
25b replied to pzarkov's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Interesting article about copyright infringement. I did not know DHS was enforcing that now. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/10/23/kansas-city-lingerie-shopowners-in-twist-after-homeland-security-panty-raid/ -
Harley Wallet + Name
25b replied to pzarkov's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
HD has been known to pretty much immediately shutdown any and all craftsmen using their name and or logo on items they sell, so...I wouldn't do it if I were you. Apparently, their attorneys can be pretty nasty. -
Yeah, I'm using a Barry King BW tool so I don't think it's the tool...and I tool on a marble slab, so not that either. I'm not sure what was unclear about what I was saying...the impressions on the finished belt have a deep, 3-D looking impression whereas the ones in the video looked very flat. I guess it is just the dampness of the leather, like you said. On the finished belt, it almost looks as if you beveled the tooling to get it to stand out more. I'll try again later and see if I can get it to look right. Thanks for making the video.

Thanks very much for making that video. I will go check it out! Ok, it makes a lot more sense now. I think my angle wasn't right when I tried it earlier. Can you please explain how you got the really high relief on the finished belt vs. the relatively low relief on the one you did in the video? I cannot understand how you got the finished belt impressions to really stand out and be embossed that deeply in the leather...mine come out rather flat unless I really pound with the maul...

Do you have a pic of the underside of the handle?
-
It's in lots of books and I think at least a few youtube videos. If you don't have the Grant book (encyclopedia of rawhide and leather braiding), you should buy it if you're interested in knots like this.
-
I'm getting a metal one so I can also use it to heat emboss it into chrome tan leather. Can't really do that with delrin.
-
There might be places that'll do it...if you're willing to buy a few thousand at a time. Places that make custom hardware like that usually have large minimum orders.
-
Oh, ok. You'd just said before that someone said it was in one of Tandy's books and that you were going to look around for it. I was just hoping you were able to locate what book it was in. I tried it the way you described with my basketweave tool and the pattern doesn't really come out looking quite the same...not as deeply embossed I guess. Oh well. Thanks anyway.

Any idea which book has this technique in it? I've looked through the ones I have and cannot find it...

No. I've never seen one anyway. There are no shortcuts to good saddle-stitching.

Concerns About Hardware Quality For Handbags
25b replied to lranger's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
OTB stuff is almost all imported asian stuff. Try http://abbeyengland.com/ if you're looking for good quality hardware. They may not carry every single tiny little thing you need, but what they do have is well made and I think most is made in their own foundry in England. -
Oh, I understand now. Thank you.

I am not sure if you're talking to me (I am the one that linked to the article, so it appears that way to me), but I already knew it was false. That's why I posted the link to it.

Don't buy that tandy rawhide. It's junk. Tons of breaks in it, very inconsistent thickness, pretty much unusable.
-
You'd never know that by the amount people are trying to get for rawhide lately...

I'm don't think there's any such thing as Horween "scraps". Especially not large ones. If they're "large", then they get used in projects. If they're small, they're really too small to be used much at all. Maybe 1-2" X 0.5". Anyway good luck. I've never had any luck trying to buy scraps of Horween. People that have it have a death grip on it.

Question About Bison Leather And Re Veg Leather
25b replied to Padenlopez's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
...I would hope so. lol I was saying this leather I'm using to make these bags is far too stiff for any kind of garment... -
Anyone ever used this stuff under knots? http://sugru.com/ It seems expensive for what it is, but I wonder how well it would work...I have a couple of small packets of it I think I'm going to try using this weekend. Last time I made a knot with rawhide, it ended up sort of misshapen (bowed out a bit at each end). Is that from not having a good foundation under the knot?

I don't think you're going to make a dress out of 5oz case leather, but ok... -
Question About Bison Leather And Re Veg Leather
25b replied to Padenlopez's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I've bought "veg tan re-tan" leather from Waterhouse Leather and there's nothing "patchy" about it...just beautiful leather. I'm making an iPad case for a friend with it right now because she really admired my own made of the same leather. -
Question About Bison Leather And Re Veg Leather
25b replied to Padenlopez's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Is there any kind of tutorial that discusses wet-molding veg tanned leather and then adhering something like bison leather on the outside of a case or anything similar? There are a few cases I'd like to make that would look very nice with exotic on the outside, but on molded cases. -
How To Keep Track Of Bobbins Loaded With Thread
25b replied to msdeluca's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I use this for small errands bobbins... http://www.amazon.com/Dritz-Bobbin-Box-for-Sewing/dp/B007P56B6K/ The insert is rubber so it keeps the bobbins tightly wound. Wonder if anyone makes something similar for the larger bobbins...
