.....ok What is the swivel snap for?
-
I got the #2 one and it is beautiful...fits my hand perfectly and is a joy to use. I'll be stitching together a Horween football leather Field Notes case with it tonight. Can't wait to use it some more!
-
What is it?
-
That's what I said. None of the "popular" ones (Chromexcel, etc.) are veg tanned. In my previous post, I was responding to nrk's post.
-
Yeah, they produce veg tan horse butt in limited quantities, but none of the "popular" ones (Chromexcel, Dublin, etc....the ones sellers seem to talk up on etsy and other places) are veg tanned.

Jazzman, Sent you a PM about burnisher sources. Kind regards..

My thoughts are that I know I'm not perfect because I'm human. But I want my work to be as close to perfect as possible so I am unrelenting on myself in that quest. I never settle for "good enough" in anything I do. If it's worth doing, it is worth being the best at it as possible. One quote I've read before that I identify with is "Amateurs practice until they get it right. Professionals practice until they can't get it wrong."

I'm glad you all like the link. I have had great transactions with leathercrafttools.com One time I had to combine orders because I found some other items I wanted to order after I'd just finalized another order. They understood my request and had no trouble combining the orders to ship at the same time and they refunded the additional shipping. The tools and other items are exactly the same as goodsjapan and also those I bought when I was in Tokyo. I order from them pretty regularly. I hope you all will have great experiences with them. I am glad they are a great alternative to the much more expensive goodsjapan.
-
Ok, I'll send you a PM.
-
I already offered that to him. No reply yet. The chainmaille chains I make look tons better than the chain in his pic...
-
Before you get overcharged at goodsjapan, go check out http://www.leathercrafttools.com Lot cheaper for the exact same items and their service and communication is great.

So I have a Sailrite LSZ-1 and I went to sew on a project this morning...and I noticed the material wasn't getting moved consistently. So I increased the stitch length and that didn't help. Then I removed my work and found the feed dog was loose. I took off the needle plate and found the feed dog had broken right at the edge between the actual feed dog part and the part of it where it is screwed onto the chassis. And of course I tried to call today to find out what Sailrite intends to do to make this right and they're closed on weekends. Awesome. This is clearly a manufacturing defect. I've probably sewed less than ten hours total on this machine since I got it new. I've oiled it as I should've and have pretty much babied it. I'm pretty upset that this happened because I have customers waiting for their items and I cannot finish them until this is fixed. I have a much larger machine (NOT a Sailrite) I'm trying to rig to finish these projects, but since it's set up to use 207 thread it's not going to work well with size 69 thread...and I don't have 207 thread in the right color or I'd just use that. I may just have to sew the items with black 207 thread. Anyway, I am very disappointed right now and just wanted to let others know if you have an LSZ-1, you might want to order a few feed dogs and keep them as spares in case yours shear off due to bad metallurgy like mine did.

Pics of what you're looking for would help.

Not unless you can find some veg tanned Horween somewhere. Not gonna work with chrome tanned.

Interesting article about copyright infringement. I did not know DHS was enforcing that now. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/10/23/kansas-city-lingerie-shopowners-in-twist-after-homeland-security-panty-raid/ -

HD has been known to pretty much immediately shutdown any and all craftsmen using their name and or logo on items they sell, so...I wouldn't do it if I were you. Apparently, their attorneys can be pretty nasty. -
Yeah, I'm using a Barry King BW tool so I don't think it's the tool...and I tool on a marble slab, so not that either. I'm not sure what was unclear about what I was saying...the impressions on the finished belt have a deep, 3-D looking impression whereas the ones in the video looked very flat. I guess it is just the dampness of the leather, like you said. On the finished belt, it almost looks as if you beveled the tooling to get it to stand out more. I'll try again later and see if I can get it to look right. Thanks for making the video.
-
Thanks very much for making that video. I will go check it out! Ok, it makes a lot more sense now. I think my angle wasn't right when I tried it earlier. Can you please explain how you got the really high relief on the finished belt vs. the relatively low relief on the one you did in the video? I cannot understand how you got the finished belt impressions to really stand out and be embossed that deeply in the leather...mine come out rather flat unless I really pound with the maul...

Do you have a pic of the underside of the handle?
-
It's in lots of books and I think at least a few youtube videos. If you don't have the Grant book (encyclopedia of rawhide and leather braiding), you should buy it if you're interested in knots like this.
-
I'm getting a metal one so I can also use it to heat emboss it into chrome tan leather. Can't really do that with delrin.
-
There might be places that'll do it...if you're willing to buy a few thousand at a time. Places that make custom hardware like that usually have large minimum orders.
-
Oh, ok. You'd just said before that someone said it was in one of Tandy's books and that you were going to look around for it. I was just hoping you were able to locate what book it was in. I tried it the way you described with my basketweave tool and the pattern doesn't really come out looking quite the same...not as deeply embossed I guess. Oh well. Thanks anyway.
-
Any idea which book has this technique in it? I've looked through the ones I have and cannot find it...
-
No. I've never seen one anyway. There are no shortcuts to good saddle-stitching.
