  1. I don't know if adding a scent would wreck it or not...probably could spray it with a scent? I'm not sure if it'd be legal to upload the pattern page here, but am willing to email it to anyone who wants it, along with how I made mine.
  2. Well....my 3 yr old tried to take a good sniff of it not long after it was dyed...and his comment was "YUCK!"
  3. I teach a leathercraft class to youth and adults at our church. Here is my first real attempt at wet forming. The rest of the ones we did in class also came out really well, and the students loved learning this. I particularly enjoyed the look on a mom's face when she realized how simple it was...she now told me she wants to make a whole bouquet! I found this class went much better than the same project in 4H - the key was to not let the leather get too wet. Also, we stained the pieces before assembly. It did mean we had to re-form them a little, but overall it went well. The one other thing I learned was to trace the pattern pieces on the rough side of the leather, so ink doesn't show on the tips of the pieces... One boy made his for a girl in his school, who'd been unable to come this week - she loved it, and the rest of the class was jealous! They all wanted roses of their own. The pattern came from a Tandy sheet. My thanks to Art S for letting me print pics of his roses to show the class - it really helped!
  4. There was a woman in the PittPounders guild, I think her name was Sharon, who did a class on it at a show I was at years ago. Maybe Johanna or another person here remembers her? She was really terrific!
  5. Guess I'm the only one who read the title It holds dice for gaming (i.e. Dungeons and Dragons). It's great looking work too!!!

What really helped me was Stohlman's book on Figure Carving.

    carving cats

I did my first cat not too long ago myself...I found the eyes to be the hardest part.
  8. Ann McGrath, who isn't on this forum yet, is in Bethlehem, PA...not too far out of your way. They should have her contact info at the Allentown Tandy if you go sometime. She mostly does small items in leather, like jewelry. Also here in Hamburg is Dennis Yoder, who does amazing gunleather items.
  9. I know where you are! I'm in Berks County - Hamburg to be exact, right down the hill from Cabelas. I also shop at the Allentown Tandy. I'd love to get together, but will unfortunately be moving OUT of the area next month...
  10. For creating your own designs, I highly recommend going to clanbadge.com and ordering the Celtic Knot Font...it's easy and awesome.
  11. I can see you and I have the same book with the dragon in it...the one on the left that is...You did a great job with it!
  12. I too only have the hand setter, and am not fond of setting spots OR snaps. When someone gives me a piece that requires repair of that nature, I tell them 5-10.00 depending on the size/difficulty of reaching where the hardware needs to go. I think, personally, it'd be within reason to charge her about 5.00 a spot for what she's given you and your circumstance. That's just me. Holly
  13. It is, I think. I'm in PA now, but just across in Jersey, you're not ALLOWED to pump your own - it says so right on the pumps, actually it says it's illegal! I think that's a bit pathetic myself...
  14. I wanted to vote, but kept getting an error....I have never worked for Tandy but would in a heartbeat if it was close enough and they had an opening. Because mine is the second income, pay wouldn't matter as much. I think they would like me for my customer service, retail experience, teaching experience, and knowledge of their stock.
  15. Thanks Regg for finding me again...sorry I'd missed your message.
  16. I love the work on that! Beautiful! How did you do the lettering along the bottom? Is it just carved and tooled?
  17. "A portfolio of original designs and how to design your own" First printing 1955 First Revised Edition 1977 This is NOT in an envelope. The book is a hardcover, with removeable pages that fold over. It is in excellent condtion, being mostly shelf kept and unused. Yours to anywhere in the US for 75.00, which includes shipping. I take PayPal, checks and money orders.
  18. I will always consider myself a Jersey girl: I was born in North Brunswick, NJ, and raised in Hunterdon County, just outside of the Clinton/Flemington area. My parents had a small horse farm there (Arabians) We even had ostriches at one point (mean, but tasty!) I went to college at Grove City, in western PA, where I met my husband (he's from Girard, OH, near Youngstown). Since there was no way I was moving to OH (no offense to the Ohioans, but it just wasn't for me!), I dragged him back to NJ. For several years, we lived there and "just over the river" in PA (the local phrase for those crossing the Delaware River which divides the region). Then we moved to the state of Delaware for 3 years before we happily moved back to PA. (Again, no offense to DE residents...but anyone who thinks Jersey is small hasn't been to DE!!!) All moves courtesy of my husband's job dissatisfaction...hopefully he's happy at his new one though: we are moving to Virginia next month as he recently started at VA Tech. I will be sad to leave this area where I've spent the majority of my life, but my parents retired down there and it will be very nice to live near family. Our 3 yr old son adores my father, and my husband gets along with my folks really well. In fact, he's staying with them now 'til we move. I hate moving! If I had the money, I'd be back in rural NJ. I know it's not as rural as where many of you live, but I miss it dearly.
  19. Great work! I liked the other pics of it on your site too.
  20. LOL on the Cabela's part of that: I worked there for a few months at the store here in Hamburg - they are WRETCHED to their employees (the management is, I mean) I have worked alot of different jobs over the years, from 10 years at a college, to an auto parts store, to a greenhouse, etc etc, and I never had a worse boss than I did at Cabelas. And I heard the same from other dept employees.
  21. I have to say that the store in Allentown, PA (where you'll find Jeff and Talina) is excellent too. They are "transplants" from TX, and definitely got the PA winter welcome last year when the store first opened (lots of ice with snow on top). They are helpful and friendly and I've never had a problem there that they didn't resolve quickly. They run classes every Sat. morning on a variety of topics.
  22. I see a pool out back and a nice neighborhood out front. We live in a small development just outside of town. It's about 15-20 years old. We have terrific neighbors all around. I can only hope we do so well when we move to Virginia next month...though I do miss the horse farm I grew up on!
  23. My only suggestion would've been to put the "codpiece" on the inside. I know, I have a friend who was into doing codpieces, and his were "showy" but sometimes being blatant isn't really attractive to the opposite sex....That's my .02. Overall though it's amazing work!
  24. I don't have the link, but it's that Mom song done to the William Tell overture. I about died when she says "were you born in a barn, do you need some hay?" Here are the complete lyrics: "Here are the lyrics to the crazy new video Total Momsense: Get up now Get up now Get up out of bed Wash your face Brush your teeth Comb your sleepy head Here's your clothes And your shoes Hear the words I said Get up now Get up and make your bed Are you hot? Are you cold? Are you wearing that? Where's your books and your lunch and your homework at? Grab your coat and your gloves and your scarf and hat Don't forget you got to feed the cat Eat your breakfast The experts tell us it's the most important meal of all Take your vitamins so you will grow up one day to be big and tall Please remember the orthodontist will be seeing you at three today? Don't forget your piano lesson is this afternoon So you must play Don't shovel Chew slowly But hurry The bus is here Be careful Come back here Did you wash behind your ears? Play outside Don't play rough Would you just play fair? Be polite Make a friend Don't forget to share Work it out Wait your turn Never take a dare Get along Don't make me come down there Clean your room Fold your clothes Put your stuff away Make your bed Do it now Do we have all day? Were you born in a barn? Would you like some hay Can you even hear a word I say? Answer the phone Get Off the phone Don't sit so close Turn it down No texting at the table No more computer time tonight Your iPod's my iPod if you don't listen up Where you going and with whom and what time do you think you're coming home? Saying thank you, please, excuse me Makes you welcome everywhere you roam You'll appreciate my wisdom Someday when you're older and you're grown Can't wait 'til you have a couple little children of your own You'll thank me for the counsel I gave you so willingly But right now I thank you NOT to roll your eyes at me Close your mouth when you chew Would appreciate Take a bite Maybe two Of the stuff you hate Use your fork Do not you burp Or I'll set you straight Eat the food I put upon your plate Get an A, Get the door Don't get smart with me Get a Grip Get in here I'll count to 3 Get a job Get a life Get a PhD Get a dose of... I don't care who started it You're grounded until your 36 Get your story straight And tell the truth for once for heaven's sake And if all your friends jumped off a cliff Would you jump too? If I've said it once, I've said at least a thousand times before that You're too old to act this way It must be your father's DNA Look at me when I am talking Stand up straight when you walk A place for everything And everything must be in place Stop crying or I'll give you something real to cry about Oh! Brush your teeth Wash your face Get your PJs on Get in bed Get a hug Say a prayer with Mom Don't forget I love you **KISS** And tomorrow we will do this all again because a mom's work never ends You don't need the reason why Because Because Because Because I said so I said so I said so I said so I'm the Mom The mom The mom The mom The mom Ta-da"
