Im gonna start a belt for a coworkers daughter and its gonna be a show belt. Question I have is with the larger trophy buckles do you still incorporate a keeper. I got measurements and didnt get a chance to see the buckle but was told its one of the larger oval ones. Probably include one anyways but make sure it is removable. What do you belt makers usually do?

MADMAX22 replied to JoelR's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Hey thats my carry gun lol. Looks good, nice compact design. I dont have much holster experience so Ill leave the critiques up to the holster guys. By the way this is a good little gun, Ive carried and shot mine for several years and never a hiccup. -
Thats way cool man, excellent job. I think that as it wears it will look even cooler.

Wherever you feel it needs it. Im no where qualified to answer this but what I do is usually in spots that curve inward. Kind of hard to explain, say you are doing a leaf and you have all the little coldasacks do it in those little half circle areas. I try and do it anywhere that has these. It gives it a nice rounded kind of domed look to it. Im still learning as well and am still trying to get the hang of lifting stuff. I tend to try it when the leather isnt at the correct moistness for doing it I guess. One thing you can look at is the tutorials in I think its figure carving section on doing like oak leaves and such, it should give you an idea of where to start. Even if your project isnt an oakleaf you can get the idea.

Petroleum oils will or should I say can brake down leather. I know of some people that use motor oil to oil there leather but in my experience working as a mechanic petroleum oils and deisel or other fuels will brake down leather big time. Yes you can put to much oil on leather. If your using neats foot oil there is a somewhat fine line on too much and just right. Generally speaking pure neatsfoot will help condition the leather and restore lost oils if used sparingly. I usually use one nice coat with my new products. The leather is able to absorb it easily and that is all that is needed. Anything else I put on will be conditioners and more of a wax based weather sealer. I am not a pro but from what I understand is that too much oil cant be absorbed into the leather and you end up with what you have. ALso too much oil will loosen the fibers in the leather from what I understand and make it allmost spongy in extreme cases. Thats why its hard to work with older leathers when oiling. Ive heard of people restoring saddles that using allmost nothing but dr jacksons hide rejuvenator. Take a look thru the saddle section and you will see thats one of the first things that most warn about with restoring saddles is not use put too much oil on. Disclaimer, Im not a pro so there are others that know alot more then myself, Im going off personal experience and what Ive read here and other places.

Prepping a tool bag for a Life Outsidfe
MADMAX22 replied to badLoveLeather's topic in Motorcycles and Biker Gear
Looks really good man. Customer should be happy. -
Thats a bummer, looks like a nice saddle minus the oil. What did they use a barrel to dunk it in. I would atleast talk to them about it, be polite but explain the situation. Family member or not if they are doing this to saddles they are gonna lose business. If it was a 1 time thing or maybe a more inexperienced person got the chance to play with your saddle then they should know about it.

Do you guys have walmart over there? If not a camping store may work. The pads that people use for under the sleeping bags or work out matts from health and finess places use neoprene lots of times and come in about half inch thick which would be thicker then a wetsuit. They arent the best alternative but worth looking into if you cant get anything shipped over there. Did a search for neoprene and australia and came up with a few websites. May be worth checking into. I have not ordered from these guys so check them out. http://www.professionalplastics.com/cgi-bin/pp.pl?pgm=co_disp&func=displ&strfnbr=3&prrfnbr=100963&sesent=0,0&search_id=329824 http://www.linkron.com.au/products-neoprene.html

I like the lay out and looks like it is all working pretty good. A couple of pointers that are just IMHO observations. Try and if you can get some better pictures of your work, you do really good stuff but the pictures quality takes away from that. Other then that I for some reason really dont know what it is but that background picture messes with me. It may just be me and its not a bad idea but I just kind of dont like it for some reason. Not that big a deal as everyone has different taste and what not. ALl in all looks really good. Biggest thing is it seems to work really well so thats the foundation. Good luck with it.

I think that will last about 10x as long as your cell phone. Excellent job, looks very good. Nice wet forming. -
Possible pouch, at last
MADMAX22 replied to MagiKelly's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
That looks really good man. You definatly have that wet forming down for these guys. -
personally I would try some saddlesoap which is what they should have done first then they should have used a light coat of oil. Hopefully it comes back to normal after some time.
-
That looks really nice, you did a good job with putting it all together and I think the color looks really good. It would probably darken a bit with some sunlight.

wallet leather weight
MADMAX22 replied to dscott's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Give it a shot, worst that could happen is it doesnt work out. Heck I made three wallets before I came up with this one that I am happy with. I wish I had money for all that extra leather as well lol. I didnt get any pictures of the one I made with the tooling but heres mine, its just a simple one.
