New Stuff to show
MADMAX22 replied to King's X's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Very cool all of them, I think those spur straps are gonna come out nicely when done. -
You should enjoy it. Some of the higher end tandy stuff is pretty nice if you can find it in the stores but the price is pretty high for the royal meadow stuff. I just wasnt a big fan of tooling the tandy line. The feel of the HO is far different so make sure you practice on a few smaller pieces first to get the feel of it. I can see why the holster guys like to use it.

Looks pretty good. I like the carving, the branches that is a nice touch and a good idea with the swivel cuts. Im sure they will like it alot.

THat looks great dude. Looks like you got all your kinks worked out.

Well got a side from Kevin at springfeild and must say this is some fun stuff to tool. Just took a piece off of it for now and was playing around. This leather is pretty different from the wicket and craig I tried (which was also very nice). Herman oak seems to be a really ferm temper which at first kind of made me wonder but just from doing a quick case and started carving and the knife glides thru it smoothly and easily. Stamps with a ease and bevels very nicely. Definatly a must try to anyone thinking of ordering some that havnt tried herman oak yet. Just had to post my comments as now Im really looking forward to getting some projects underway with this stuff.

Advice on a new idea with the Cue cases I am making
MADMAX22 replied to filluptieu's topic in How Do I Do That?
Not sure if this will help but for doing the rivets I would take and make two V notched stands say out of 2x6's or something similer. Then take a longer round post that will be about 4" longer on each side then the case your building so you can slip the cue case over the post then set it in the V notched stands so that they support it at both ends. If you wanna get really intricate get the post leveled off on one side to give you about a 2" flat on one side the entire length then attach a flat piece of aluminum or steel, you can get the 1" wide pieces at lowes or home depot for a decent price. Or even try metal shops may be cheaper. Attach this metal strip to the flat portion that you have made. Now you could put your rivets in, slide it into your jig and hammer away. Just a thought. May not work as I have thought lol. -
Airbrush

Forgot about Iwata thats another good brand as well. The one Marin has I have used alot before and its a very well rounded durable little guy that is pretty much a base for all kinds of airbrushing crafts. One thing to remember also the cheapo models have very poor orings that wont last shooting dye thru them. -

Havnt gotten to use one on leather but I can give you my input from when I use to paint with them. Double action for sure, allows far better control and after some practice is easy to use (atleast IMHO) and if you ever get into doing designs and such you can do some really nice stuff. Generally you get what you pay for, I would recommend either badger which I allways had good luck with. They have everything from middle road to real nice. The 150 is a middle of the road that will get you nice results if I remember right. The other brand I was familier with is Paasche, they make some nice stuff also. My friends allways used paasche so I dont have much in the way of help for that brand just know it got nice results. -

Contributions to Leatherworker
MADMAX22 replied to Denise's topic in Announcements and Administrivia
THanks a bunch Johanna and if it wasnt for this place and putting the silly idea that I could make my own motorcycle seat into my head I would have never started leatherworking. Ofcourse now 2yrs later and a couple grand short Ive just cut the leather for my seat. Stupid leather junkies got me hooked too . Gotta get my donation in. -
Just my experience but Im not very experienced lol. The feibings dye which is what I use also in full strength will take neer forever to get to stop rubbing off. I am not sure if you delute them or not but I delute mine about 50/50 with denatured alcohol (grab it at lowes or home depot cheap). I will do usually a couple of coats then let it completely dry. Then I buff it for a while. Then I oil it and then let it sit overnight to absorb the oil and dry. Most recommend 24hrs for the oil to set in so I try to hold to that but not allways. Once that is done I buff it some more. Then depending on where I am at with my project Ill go ahead and seal it with what ever you plan on sealing with. I personally for my projects generally use either leather balm with atom wax or tan coat. I usually do a couple of layers and LET IT DRY between layers. And not to thick either on the sealer or it doesnt work right. Once that is done I usually do a thin layer of aussie wax or snoseal. Thats depends on the project though and is just my own thing,

THat is pretty cool. Very nice work. Whos tools are those hidepounder, they look very nice.
-
Very nice, ecspecially for your first one. I hope my first seat turns out that well.

Thanks a bunch guys. I think Ill give that a go Hilly. I assume that barbours thread you can dye to get it different colors before you wax it, if so does the regular leather dye work or should I use like a RIT dye or something similer made for fabric?
-
Looking for some unwaxed linen thread for handsewing. I used the waxed stuff from springfeild and like it but trying to get the ends setup for for the needle is kind of a pain. I would like to play with some unwaxed stuff and use my own wax/resin mix on them if possible. I just havnt scene any suppliers of such. Thanks

Very cool design.

The only hides Ive gotten from ebay are stingray and ostrich legs. The ostrich legs are ok but that was what was described. They were from florida I think. The guy is very quick with shipping. The stingray comes from over seas but the guy I ordered several from arrived fairly quickly (about 2 weeks) and were all in great shape and looked really good. Oh and I also got some snake skins from the same guy and they were nice as well. Never tried vegtan or anything else from ebay, I stick to the regular dealers for that. Waterhouse has a deal on double shoulders right now, pretty cheap. There deals are usually decent leather ecspecially for the price. Ive got a hide on the way from Kevin as well since I wanted to try out the herman oak. Ordered one but it was in pretty bad shape, quick email and Kevin is sending a new one with return postage paid for the other. Very happy with the whole experience. Kevin is a standup guy and very good to work with.
