  6. Well, I let two pieces soak for about 30 mins and they darkened a little...... I put one back in for about 3 hours and it darkened a little more..... I let them dry for several hours and their wasnt a big change.... So I just dropped them in (midnight) and let them soak til noon and see what that does. At this point, I ain't expecting a big change...... Will let yall know what I come up with. William
  7. Hey LWers! Had a idea this morning (yeah it hurts to think in the morning...)!! I got a big plastic tub out in the back yard with a buncha pieces of broken up cedar fence planks. All untreated natural cedar. I cut the planks up and use as firewood when camping with the Scouts just in case we can find any dry stuff around the campsite. I noticed that the tarp over it had shifted and filled with water. The last good rain we had was Hurricane Ike back in Sept, so that water has been in there for about 7 weeks. It was so dark it looked like a nice glass of ice tea when I started pouring it out.... I stopped as soon as I saw the color of the water and thought....vinageroon from cedar??? Got a few pieces soaking in it right now....gonna let em set in it for about 30 mins to try for a nice rich brown or dark tan. Any predictions on how it will turn out????? William
  8. Welcome aboard! I like the contrast of the black and white....depending on the rest of the outfit it is worn with. As for the leatherwork itself....DAMN GOOD JOB! Keep posting pix! William
  9. The doc said it was just the repetative motion that weakened a spot in the muscle and then tore it.. He asked if I felt it hurting and if I kept going. I told him I had three Scouts (one of them my son) that needed moc boots for their first ceremony and I wasnt gonna let them down. I had to get them done and when my shoulder was hurting so I would do a few stitches, put my arm down for a few minutes and then do a few more stitches.... The doc said "you know...I never beleived in playing thru the pain....and this is why! Pain means STOP!" Hehehe, he wasnt happy with me.... William
  10. better grip huh....gonna have to try that. I use them for when i'm dyeing the leather too... If I aint too lazy to put them on. Needless to say, I walk around with half dyed fingers quite often..... William
  11. Ok, i'm missing something. What do the gloves do if you cut the fingers off??? Is the purpose to keep your skin oils off the leather or what?????? I do lotsa hand stitching and would love to know! William
  12. Well, I just started leather work last year...November actually...so I am still a beginner. But I have had 5 or 6 paying orders over the last few months. Made a few hundred dollars profit. Spent it all at Tandy..hehehe But as the economy goes south...and Conoco-Philips cuts contract employees and piles the work on their normal employees....I find myself with lotsa time and little to do (other than look for more real work contracts which are getting harder to find). With one son at the Univ of Texas and another following in about 9 months, gotta do something.... I've basically employed the shotgun effect. I've found a few websites that let you post stuff and also go thru their custom request sections and bid. I've bid on lotsa requests and got the 5 or 6 jobs mentioned above. At my skill level, it won't replace my regular salary, but those little jobs are bringing a little in at least....... Hopefully, this will bring me a variety of jobs and help me develop different techniques I may not think of doing while working on stuff for myself or Scouts. Thats my 2 cents. William

Kaltenberg was my first Ren Fest! I love the picture you have in your post. It shows some very nice effects. I am going to make a few of those items for the Boy Scout Leather Merit Badge I am teaching later this month. 19. I'm in Houston and we ain't even got a guild!! However, I was able to find a 'teacher'. I was at my local Tandy and they have several business cards on the front counter for customers who have their own custom leather shops. I am good friends with the manager and asked her who among her regular customers did she think would be willing to meet one-on-one and critique my work and possibly answer some questions for me. She plucked up a card right away for a gentleman who has been doing leatherwork for over 50 years and said "here ya go!" I have met with Mr. Aubrey twice now and he is willing to show me anything I want to learn. If there is no Tandy, maybe a local saddle shop or other type of related business. My mother lived up near Lake Livingston and one of the local grocery stores had a 'card board' for local shops to tack their cards on. Maybe you can take this route and see what ya can scare up? Let us know!! William
  20. Don't see anythign to critique there William! I love the beadwork and the rustic look! They all look great! They certainly LOOK authentic 'old west' to me, but I am no expert. Good job buddy! William
