One is a diamond shaped tip and the other is triangular shaped.

I would definitely check the copyright status of any image you find this way. But there are a lot of places on the internet that you can get artwork that is actually free and usage requirements are listed to. Try Wikimedia Commons. Most art there is free for simply giving credit to the author. This will allow people to use your method and not leave them culpable for any legal issues.

The first thing I thought of when I read the title was "Into the Wild" which actually has a leathercrafter as a character in it and they talk about a leathercrafting a little in the movie.

Maybe you picked up some cheap knock offs on Ebay? I'd check the seller on Ebay either way. Most of them offer 30 day returns if they're resellers. With the line being so new I can't see them being purchased and already being sold unless there was a problem with it already. Maybe you get had? I purchased the Pro Line diamond stitching chisels with 3mm spacing in both the 2 and 4 prong last weekend to try the new line out myself and I'm not having any problem with them going through 2 layers of 8/10oz Herman Oak leather and I'm pretty rough with the mallet. I can't see the 6 prong really being that much different. I'm planning on buying the others in the set along with the 2mm and 4mm spacing sets.

Glockinator, tandy has a free video on how to make and use beveler strops here http://www.tandyleat...e-Bevelers.aspx

That's a scratch awl you're using. While you can use it it's not the best. A diamond pointed stitching awl will give you better looking holes and be easier to puncture the leather. And as already stated use a smaller thread.

I use a 1/2" dowel with a hole drilled into it. But I generally only use it for tight places where my fingers can't support the leather. Never occurred to me to use it on normal sewing to protect my fingers. Though I must admit I like the wax idea and will probably start using that. I would assume it takes care of waxing the awl at the same time.

Looks like a Tandy bag. You might want to email them directly. They have older kit patterns on www.leathercraftlibrary.com. Maybe you might find it there.

Using Google Books And Amazon Look Inside
HellfireJack replied to Sylvia's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Sylvia, If you're putting this out as a way to save people money then you're not being honest with us here. You can't just go into the preview and see those pages. The search feature is not intended to give you access to the most or all of the book. You're using what a hacker would call a simple exploit to access information you shouldn't normally be able to access. If you're using it to gain information rather than just seeing if the book is good to buy then you are doing something wrong. Sorry but I call a spade a spade. If people use this to read a book for free they would normally have to purchase then they're taking money from the author. This is pretty simple to understand. You can do it all you want but don't sit and tell me that pointing out what this is is makes me wrong and then call me names because I'm not afraid to say it. -
Beeswax-Oil Mix

As far as I know paraffin adds rigidity and hardness to the all otherwise easily malleable mix. -

LOL! Silvia, do be serious. Are you saying anyone who uses this method to read a book for free instead of buying it wouldn't be a thief? I'm not sure what you're saying here? And your name calling is useless in this discussion. Luckily I'm a fairly decent guy so you won't get the same treatment in return. I've already explained my opinion and what I mean precisely. if you have issues with it then those issues are yours and not mine. As I said you may not have intended for it to be such but this is what it is. It's extremely insulting to me that you would call me names while teaching people to use exploits to read books for free. Be serious here. Do you honestly think everyone who reads this will use this method you've put out to simply preview books before they buy them? What if some of these authors were orphans? Would stealing from orphans be OK?!? OMG!! CALL ME ANOTHER NAME!!! I hope everyone supports these authors and craftspeople in their endeavors and purchases these books rather than just using this method to read them for free. Fair is fair right? -

This trick isn't about previewing before you buy. It's showing others how not to have to pay for a book. You can inject whatever you have to in order to justify using this method. You don't need my approval to live your life and I'm not going to give it. Do what you have to do. As I've stated several times. I'm not going to use it and I hope others support these authors/craftspeople and actually purchase these books instead of just using this to read them for free. -

A side picture might nice too. -
Keep it straight. The diamond shape holes keeps your stitches looking neat. If you twist it you lose that.

HellfireJack replied to Sylvia's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
If you keep said book and never return it then yes it's stealing. I don't think anyone would disagree. If, however, you abide by the policies of the lending library and return the book of course it's not stealing. Libraries pay money for their books and they encourage reading. They do it with taxpayers money. Just because your library card is free it doesn't mean the authors aren't getting paid for their work. Your example doesn't quite match the given situation. I'm not going to abuse the glitch in their system. That's all I've said. in my opinion it's unfair to the author and cheats them out of money. I've not told anyone they have to stop. You can abuse it all you want. This is a discussion board. People give their opinions here and discuss things. -

How dare I what? Give my opinion? Lord have mercy what have I done?!? GASP ::SHOCK:: QUICK SOMEONE CALL HIM A NAME!!! LOL. Grow up a little and try to be civil. You're teaching people how to abuse a glitch in Amazon's book preview in order to not have to buy a book. This may not have been your intent but it is what it is. You're taking money away from the authors of those books by doing this. You can call it whatever you want, I call it stealing. All I said was that I'm not going to abuse the bug and I think I'm free to give my opinion. If you're fine with doing it by all means please continue. I'll just pay the 13 bucks and buy the book. Feel free to have your opinion as well. No name calling needed on my part . Have a good day. As far as I know Leather Guru there is no price prominently displayed on LW.net's message boards. Even if there were, I'm not circumventing their system in order to read these messages and I'm not doing anything wrong at all here. Why don't you give LW.net 50 bucks for me since you're so concerned about them getting some payment from everyone. In the mean time I'll continue supporting LW.net as I already have by clicking on their ads and banners and puchasing from those clients who advertise with them. I probably will eventually also give money directly to LW.net but it won't be because of you and your ineffective guilt trips attempts. Thanks for you input though. -

I'm not sure if it's the picture or the stamping but your basket weave looks a bit shallow. Other than that I like the design and overall look of it. -

No thanks. I'd rather support the artists and people who advance our craft than steal from them. -
That mywot website has nothing to do with rating the products or services the companies sell. It's a safe browsing tracker. It looks like someone went and listed Tipmann as a phishing site somewhere. It also looks like anyone can list them as a phishing site. Which means the mywot site is useless for tracking browsing safety issues. So either it's someone trying to blacklist them or Tippmann perhaps fell victim to a phishing hack.

Granite is more durable. You can mar the surface of marble with steel tools. Marble is also more susceptible to damage from heat. The darker the granite, the more dense it will be, the stronger it will be. I would go with the largest block you can get. I wouldn't get anything smaller than 1'x1'

About Importing Endangered Species
HellfireJack replied to xtine's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
As far as leather goes (I'm going to assume you mean a hide with the hair removed) I would also assume that custom agents the world over rely on the paperwork rather than visual identification. A hide with hair on it (fur) might be different but I would also assume that custom agents still rely on documentation rather than visual inspection of the actual hides for species. As pointed out one can be made to look like another as well but, that aside, most violators of CITES will not be using customs to move their black market products into CITES member states. First read this: http://www.cites.org/eng/disc/how.php It's the mechanics of how CITES works. Here are the appendixes: http://www.cites.org...011/E-Dec22.pdf You also should check all of the reservation that are made to CITES by it's member states. http://www.cites.org...app/reserve.php These are animals that some countries do not believe should be controlled by CITES. Any reservation made exempts that country from issues when dealing with that animal. It is a free pass. Also remember that CITES is not a global legal device. There are still 20+ countries that are not members. These countries can freely trade in anything their country allows. Then read this: http://library.fws.g...rmits-certs.pdf It lists the different types of certificates and what they allow to be imported/exported (As far as the US Fish and Wildlife agency is concerned) Yes, a CITES cert allows products from certain endangered animals to be traded. There are a few reason that some trade is still allowed. That's the purpose of certifications. Pre-CITES certs would be the most prevalent I assume since people still deal in ivory products and skins that were taken before CITES existed. Yes, All shipments that pass fully through customs would be checked. There are still probably a few ways to get illegal contraband through customs. Whatever you choose. Your best bet would be to choose something on Appendix I of CITES. Then you have 175 countries to play around with. Skins and furs would be most likely be tanned in their country of origin. The lure involved in trading in illegal animal products is in their rarity more so than how they feel or even look. -
What are you stamping on top of? You'll get better impressions working in a piece of granite than you can when working on a wood surface.
