Searching for a natural, stiff material
Klara replied to SeaCitadel's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Perfectly possible, as I said I don't remember where and when in antiquity it was. But Ancient Greece is always a good possibility. -
Don't worry, German grammar school art teachers 45 years ago also recommended hair spray, but the brand was probably Schwarzkopf or Gard. Sadly I always forget to look in the aisle with house cleaning and grooming products and so I still don't know whether something similar to Mop 'nd Glo exists in France I have managed to get Loctite - is it okay for Sam Brown studs or should I buy a special product for them?

Very nice work! And a good way to carry these big Swiss Army knives...

I am very sure that you will be able to make something from this leather. Just keep it for now and find a local supplier where you can see and touch the leather before buying it. For me that's the best way (and my local supplier is 90 km away).

Amazing work, thanks for sharing!

I actually might use it - IF it is NOT called anything leather! (Incidentally, in parts of the world it would be illegal to call the stuff leather.) There's a good use for most materials, natural or man-made, but I hate attempted fraud. Nothing against deep-fried veggies in batter - everything against vegan chicken nuggets (if that exists). I've seen bags made out of cork sheets. No idea about their characteristics, but I might be willing to buy one if I needed one and liked the design. As long as the material is not called oak leather... Another thing: Which biogas waste? Where I live, farmers build biogas plants to catch the volatile parts of muck and sell or use it. Which sounds perfect - up to the point where they decide to skip the cow and throw the "fodder" directly into the fermenter because it's a lot less work. So what exactly are you planning to work on? Pure curiosity... -
What is Mycelium Leather? Does it exist?

Given that Agenda 21 was written in 1992 and population has increased from 5.5 billion to 8 billion, whatever is written there was not very useful. Also, in Germany and France people are still encouraged and helped to breed and as far as I know, the Catholic Church still is against contraception. -

The alternative would be to get numbers back to cavemen. For overpopulation is the biggest problem. Which, funnily enough, has been known for 40 years at least (that's when I saw the documentary on German TV), but nobody's been doing anything about. As for climate change and scientists, I strongly recommend the afterword to Michael Crichton's State of Fear. The book is one of his worse ones (though it does explain why governments have a vested interest in making people afraid), but the afterword should be required reading for everybody. -
Question from a kid who grew up in Europe, sampling everything the parents drank (and mostly not liking it): Is the bottle sleeve for law enforcement purposes the same as a paper bag? You can't see the label, therefore it's not alkohol inside?

Shopping cart security tokens
Klara replied to Klara's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Took me a minute to get the first part, and still haven't understood the second possibility. But it gave me another (?) idea: Using the snap on the keyring for holding a pouch closed (without flap, just the two long sides). I believe that should work to stop the coin from falling out. Though the closure-less version survived its first trip just fine. And strictly speaking I don't need more than one keychain (all my other keys are already equipped with useful accessories: Mini-Victorinox, mini-Leatherman, mini-compass, -thermometer and light....) -

What does KAM stand for (Amazon has a lot of different results) and where do I find good ones? -
This is my new keychain with a 50-cent piece inside (for shopping caddies). I know it's not beautiful, but it might do the job. Or not, if the flap, which I have made without any fastener, doesn't stay closed in long-term use. What could I use for a very flat fastener? My snaps are all pretty high (and don't close securely, cheap stuff), so are Sam Brown studs. Velcro would have to be sewn on and thus look ugly on the outside of the flap, besides I don't think that Velcro and pocket lint are a good combination. Any sort of buckle is right out. Is there anything left short of making the flap longer and narrower and pushing it through a loop sewn to the pocket?

The marks are the "disadvantage" of full-grain leather, which is not treated to remove them. So I'd say, enjoy them, they prove you have the real thing. (The plastic-coated split leather I bought by mistake and have been using for doggy things has no marks at all.)

Now that's what I call a bag! Very nice, and very practical! Do I see a D-Ring on the inside? For keys? I'd just be worried about the handles. The stitches holding them seem too few for the carrying capacity of the bag (i. e. the bag looks suitable for gold bullion, the handles not so). But as the new owner is unlikely to reenact Three Kings, it probably won't matter.

Your English seems better than my French, because I am actually German. But I got the idea in both languages and I'll have to try it.
-
That's brilliant! For I have lost nearly all my belt loops. Is the narrow strip fastened to the belt in any way? I believe I need another belt...
-
They are beautiful and I want one (or several) but I am worried about service life. Will friction fit really be enough? Guess I'll have to make one and try it out. Would make a great gift for the lady in the funeral parlour who gave me the slab of polished granite for stamping...
-
Nice! What does the narrow strip of leather at the inside of the belt do? The blue marbling on the pouches is beautiful as well - how did you apply the dye?
-
Given that they make welding gloves from leather and blacksmiths and farriers were leather aprons I would have thought naked leather to be very fire resistant. Another question is whether that's still the case after dyeing and surface treatment.
-
Are you sure the cloth strap matches the bag's cloth parts, coulour-wise? Because on my screen it looks very different, horribly so (the bag seems to be a warm, orangy red and the strap a cold, blueish red.) If that is only a problem of the photo, I'd go with the wider strap - more comfortable. However, if the colours in reality are as I see them here, use the leather strap, absolutely!
-
Beautiful! It's almost a pity to actually use it and cover up the design with the stuff from your pockets

I second the sharpies. I've used them on a checkbook sleeve (natural leather) and on a results book sleeve from leather dyed red (or possibly coated red), both are over a year old, in frequent use and looking good.
