Hi, I have a disability with my left hand. I have for the last 2 years or so tried to just keep working and hope that I would beat it. It has actually gotten worse and is now, trying to hold tools in that hand has just gotten to hard. I know that those things aren't being made anymore. I am putting some feelers out there to see if there are any used ones available. Thanks for the help. Randy

I've just had a look at this supplier https://www.gandmtools.co.uk They have various new old stock knives and other items, mostly by George Barnsley, a traditional Sheffield tool maker who ceased trading several years ago They include 'half moon knife' for £25 plus VAT - well worth buying

Morning leatherworkers, I bet you have all been asked this question before. I'm about to start adventure in leather craft, I'm needing good quality leather tools to start making leather wallet, wallet lanyards, belts and bags. Not really 100% sure on the tools required! I know I will need things like pricking iron but I'm so confused about sizes etc, and other tools required. My grandfather done a lot of leather work but is unfortunately not around anymore to share his knowledge and all his tools are unsalvageable. It would be great if you could help, I don't have a bottomless pit of money. But I do understand it's worth buying good quality tools. I'm based in the UK, so any suggestions on suppliers would be great also. Thanks Paul

We aren't there yet, but my wife and I are considering doing hand tooling, possibly expanding what we offer. Naturally when I think of leather tools, first though is Tandy. But over the years, needing a thing here and there, I have found that some of Tandy's stuff is good, exactly what I needed. But then I'll some other thing and it's near worthless. Totally hit or miss. No telling what I'll get. Who is a supplier and/or manufacturer of quality leather tools, no screwing around? I would especially be interested in names of tool manufacturers so I know who I'm actually looking for regardless of who supplies it.

Hey Everyone. Please have a look at my photos my cross stitch. I am using 0.6 ritza tiger thread and a KSblade punch round dent to make the holes. I tried to use "lin cable au chinois" in size 832 , but it kept unravelling and breaking between all the back and forth. The ritza is waxy and hard to use, but works better. I got about 3/4 through my project and the whole thing got too loose on the front and tight on the back and then a thread snapped. I have come to the realization this method won't work for me. If anyone has any advice i would be so grateful. i feel i need another kind of thread/ and bigger holes spaced a bit wider apart. KS blade punch don't make any bigger punches. so i have ordered a 1mm punch drive from tandy and am gonna punch the holes by hand i think. Please tell me what you think, Thanks , s

I had great results from my KS Blade irons, but feel I’m ready to push forward to pricking irons, and awls to produce a higher quality stitch(eventually LoL!). Palosanto awls came today, and I was imeadiatly impressed with the quality and finish. Service was personal, and shipping was fast. Now I just need to start punching and stitching some scrap before a mess up any good bridle leather.

I am asking $45 shipped (in the US) I can't submit a picture because the files are too large but I would be more than happy to send it in an email. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

George Barnsley was a maker of good quality tools for various trades, including leather work http://www.gandmtools.co.uk Have a decent selection of their old stock, including hammers, awls, and various knives. The prices are reasonable, for example, I have just ordered a single point head knife at £20, but there will be VAT and p&p on top of that

I did a blog post review of Texas Leather Dies. I won't recreate it here, but the condensed version is --they are amazing. Ten outta ten! If you'd like the details, check it out on my website at https://www.BruceGibsonDesign.com If you're in the market for clicker dies, mallet dies, etc., I highly recommend these folks. They are also Leatherworker.net supporters. Awesome all-around!

Hi everyone, This is my first post and I apologize if this is a question that has been asked before. I did do a search but did not find the answer. My question, is there any significant difference between using a creaser with an alcohol burner or an electrical setup? Does one work better than the other? Do you see better results or get a better finished product by using one method over the other? Thanks in advance for your opinions. -Frank

Hello everyone I'm brand spanking new to leatherwork, having only ever made stuff (bags & tool rolls) out of canvas up until now. I'd like to progress into leather; making tool rolls and ditty bags to compliment my canvas ones. I'd also like to start making belts too. As with every other newbie I'm totally confused about the tools out there and what I need / don't need. I've read forum posts here, checked out websites and watched YouTube and have a rough idea of the basics. However, I also have a lot of questions and hope to find answer here. I understand the opinion of 'Buy The Best Tools You Can Afford', but I'm not 100% committed to the cause yet, so feel that shopping at Tandy here in the UK could be a good place to start. I read both good and bad things regarding Tandy, but to me the prices are affordable and the convenience of using one shop instead of sourcing tools from all over the world is preferable at this time. Am I making an error with this idea? I'm favouring the use of Tandy's Craftool Pro Stitching Chisels. I like the idea of punching neat, clean holes straight through the leather ready for stitching (and using a stitching awl for single holes in the corners). They had a favourable review from Armitage Leather so think they'll suit me just fine. My questions here are: If I use wing dividers to score a line in the leather do I really need a dedicated adjustable groover as well? Is it a handy enough tool to use elsewhere in projects? If I use a smooth-faced hammer / cobbler's hammer on the stitches afterwards do I need an overstitch wheel? Should I get a diamond awl as well? Just in case? I can't quite justify spending money of strap end punches, even though I can really see the benefit of them; quick, clean cuts every time! I'm thinking of using templates, just for now, instead. Would a head knife be the best choice in cutting the leather, or could I get away with a Stanley knife / box cutter? I think that's the main questions I have for now. Thanks for taking your time to read this far. All the best. Pic attached in the kind of thing I make now and would like to try in leather.

Hello, folks. I'm looking for the attached tools, or something equivalent - both brogue punches, and fixed dividers. Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

I’m wondering if anybody has tried out the edge bevelers made by Johnleather in China. The price is ridiculously low at about $10 per edger. They look good but I’m concerned about the steel they use. They make them in 316L stainless, which is a low carbon steel. If you’ve tried them out, how good of an edge can you get , and how long does it hold? I love the narrow profile but my wallet doesn’t want to let go of $60+ for a brand that I know will be high quality. Should I pass these up and save for a better brand? Here’s a link to their eBay: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F283039884275

Hi there, I've signed up for my first leather class and need to bring tools. I know some of you clever people have some great ways to travel with your stuff! Im also not sure what tools to bring? It's a figure carving class. I was looking at an ammo case and my husband said he''d make me a small wood block for a tool holder. I'd love your ideas and pics if you have them. Thank you!

My grandfather recently moved into an assisted care facility, and my uncle was cleaning out his things when he found some tools in a WW2-Era bag (the pouch is stamped 1945, and a stamp inside the bag itself says 1943) that he thought I might like, so he shipped them over to me. According to my uncle, he believes my grandfather had taken up leatherworking in between his service in WW2 and the Korean War. I've taken some pictures of the tooling tools that have markings on them. I'm hoping we can try and figure out when they actually date from! They're in remarkably good condition, considering their supposed age. My uncle said the tools were rolled up in the tool bag untouched for a few decades. There is also a crumbling yellow envelope (empty, unfortunately) for an invoice from the "Henry Frank Leather Co., Inc." located at 220 East Washington St, Syracuse 2, N.Y. .. A preliminary Googling shows that a Henry Frank Leather Co existed at an address on Walton St in Syracuse from 1960 to 1991, supported by a photograph from 1983 I found on Flickr. This means that the envelope is from either before 1960 or after 1991 (which is unlikely). The tooling tools are marked with a Craftool Co. marking, and they're numbered 104, 198, 352, 433, 704, and 708. In the bag there was also a weird brown block of some kind. Doesn't appear to be metal (or at least doesn't react to a magnet), and has FP13 stamped on the end of it. A little bit rough to the touch, like a fine-grain sandpaper. Anyone know what it could be?

I don't always have the $$$ to give away for something I can fabricate from crap laying around the workshop. From left to right, rear row--> large bag punches and wide oblong specialty punch, variable size billet tip 'V' shape, several size 1/2 round billet tips, 90 degree rounders and full cirlcle punches. The very far back is a gear tip cutter for steampunk projects. Front row, left to right--> wood handle is stitching groover/border tool. I have a long cutter that goes out to 6", wire shaped tool is freehand groover. the square root looking tool is another billet tip cutter. The fork is obviously a thonging chisel and the handle from fork is a french skiver. I still use these tools everyday... My cost is just time spent digging around garage looking for pipe scraps and the time to make the tool itself...
