Hey There, We are in need of a piece of Horween's Natural CXL in roughly 5/6oz. I will not need a full side of this as we do not typically add this to our collection. This is a hired job and we just need about 4 sqft. Let me know if anyone has some we can buy off you! Cheers, Christian howlandhidesupply.com

Hello, I run a well known automotive aftermarket parts company that has been in business for 6 years. I am looking to hire someone to create wrist bands, shift knob covers, and other misc leather car accessories. On average, we need about 20 misc small accessories made per week. I want to use high end leather this time around like horween and exotic skins for a new line we are creating. We also want to eventually venture out and make men's bags and accessories. We are based in the US. Location doesn't matter as we can arrange shipping but being in the north east definitely will help. Please email agimjones@gmail.com

Hello Everyone, I am very new both here and to leatherworking. I was tasked with making a leather tote bag for my sister for christmas. It was the only thing she requested so I felt obligated to take a crack at my first bag. I used: 5oz Dublin Horween Chromexcel 8oz Buffalo for the straps Copper rivets 1mm Cigar Tiger thread all stitches hand punched and saddle stitched There was quite the learning curve with the designing and assembly of this bag, I already know of a few things (mostly surrounding order of operatioins) that I will do different. Any advise is welcome since I hope to improve to the level of the things I see here! Edit: These are the only pictures I have from the build process, I have asked my sister for some pictures of it after a few weeks of use but nothing yet.

So I have a friend visiting and I need to figure out something I can make quickly that is still nice that she'll like. I come up with the idea of a small clutch or coin purse in the shape of a cat's face. I look around on the internet a bit for ideas and am not really seeing anything, so I do a few sketches and land on this one. Actually the sketch wound up being a frankenstein-like cat purse, but it seemed that everything was fighting me so I went simpler. For one thing, I couldn't find any rivets that were short enough for only one layer of leather. I'm not thrilled about the giant snap in the middle of the forehead, especially without the small rivets along the top to distract from it, but at least it's dark so it's not too noticeable from a distance. The lacing was another thing that gave me fits. I had gotten some of it completed when the lacing snapped, it was simply too old and had become brittle. I had already poked slits all around the edge though, so what can I do but lace? So I grab one of my longer pieces of Horween, a straight edge ruler, and a rotary cutter and try to make a consistent piece of lace and am moderately successful. It's much too thick to pull through the lacing slots though, and I'm not confident of my ability to skive the entire thing down. So I punch holes where the slits are and get lacing. You know something about thicker lace? It takes up more material. I was THREE HOLES SHORT. In retrospect, I probably could have pounded the lace to flatten it out more and add length before I started lacing, but hindsight and all that. So I cut a little more lace and splice it in. I think it turned out alright despite myself. Oh, and I probably should have used contrasting thread for the mouth, but I was really crunched for time at that point so shallow taps with the lacing nail and I called it acceptable.

Hello All, This is a Christmas present for a friend of the family. Horween essex exterior lined and padded with Veg Tan. Saddle stitched with 632 fil au chinois, at 8 Spi (9 tpi iron) One of the punched holes got away from me and is a bit off center, it really upset me as there is nothing than can be done once it's punched. Oh well, I don't think his wrist is that big anyway .

Finally got brave enough to try making something besides bracelets with the Horween I have. Based off of figure 66 illustration on page 44 in the book Purses in Pieces, I made the sides suede since it's strong and flexible, plus I had just gotten a nice dark brown hide that matches the Horween pretty nicely. I cut the lacing with a straight edge and a rotary cutter, I'm definitely going to have to get a lace cutter if I keep doing this because my consistency was crap. Still, I think I did pretty well considering I couldn't find my calipers (where DOES this stuff go?!) and I was making each hole one by one with a nail that had been flattened out and filed to make the lacing holes. I think it will flatten out a bit as it's used, right now it's keeping the shape of being rolled up plus the tension from the lacing.

Thanks to Cseeger I have some awesome coin snaps. This is the first one I've used since I got them so even though it's just a bracelet I'm showing it off. I also did something a bit different with the mystery braid, instead of cutting the strips the entire length of of the strap, I stopped in the middle so it's two braids in one bracelet. I really like how it lays flat against the flat of the wrist when braided this way. I think I'm finally getting the hang of setting snaps, they're firmly attached without denting the hell out of the caps. This is my first time setting rivets and once I figured out the trick of it (and used the proper setter) they were pretty easy to do. I rather like how the "filigree" one looks, I'll probably be pushing that further on the next bracelet I make.

Thanks to Nstarleather, I got my hands one some luscious Horween leather. Because I'm a newbie, I'm petrified of screwing up the nice big slabs I have and figured I'd start with something nice and small that would trim up the edges which would be waste material anyway. My guy has been making noise about a bracelet he can wear to work and I had been looking at mystery braids, so off I went. I think I'm on my fifth bracelet now, I might have a problem. First pic is of the latest one I made, nicely snug without cutting off circulation. I decided to play with punches a bit, I think I need to sharpen them because the edges are a bit fuzzy. This wasn't an ideal scrap so it looks a bit rough, but I like the idea of a pattern like that. I was on such a roll with mystery braiding that I decided to use up a scrap of thin veg tanned leather I had laying around and then spray it with two new colors of eco flow dye I had recently gotten. My guy is now clamoring for me to make a version of this for him. -_- I call it the joker bracelet for the colors used. My biggest annoyance is the snaps, I have some line 24 snaps in different colors but the shafts on them are so long that I had to take a jewelry saw to them to shorten them up and it still ended up deforming the cap a bit (just enough so I noticed). The other snaps I'm using are from Joann fabrics and while they're just the right length, the hardware that is used for the top/bottom bits come in this weird plastic clamshell thing that you hit with a mallet, and of course being plastic it snapped at the hinge so now I have to wince while having my fingers way too close to the mallet to hold everything together.

This is my latest briefcase, designed for a client out east. I custom make all of the handles and large buckles for the bags and belts in my shop. This one is egyptian olive wood and solid brass. The flap is lined with italian wool. Gives it a nice flash when you open it up.

So I just got my hands on a side of Horween Chromexcel. While it is very nice to work with, the first challenge I have run into is that it doesn't seem to glue very well. I have always used Weldwood and never had any issues, but it just didn't want to stick to this CXL. The surface is kind of slick, but I have glued other chrome tanned leathers before. I tried roughing up the grain side. It didn't help much, but I probably didn't rough it up enough, I just went over it lightly with sandpaper. Anyone had this problem? What kind of glue are you using on CXL?
-
I've been experimenting with some briefcase ideas, incorporating some of my hand-made brass and exotic wood handles and hardware. This one is also lined with an Italian wool men's suit material. Simple single gusset brief, but I've adopted/adapted the rod look from the music breifcases. Great littel bag, and with the brass and Purpleheart handle, it really is nice to carry. Overall I'm quite happy with it, though I think that the leather would be more suited to a turned bag...that'll be next on my list.

ok - before you start telling me about where to go to get horween, I know about tannery row, springfield leather, mavericks etc... I'm not looking for horween, not even because of the price, but because of how ANNOYING it is to get and shop around for. I'm looking for similar high end brands. I can't seem to find any but there HAS to something surely?

I woke up at 3 am the other night and decided to work on something I have never tried before. I created the design and pattern in Illustrator and then got to work. When I finished at 6:30 am, this was the product. I'm very happy with how it turned out for it being my first time trying an inlay. There are a few spots where the stitching is too close for the inlay vs. the outside. The leather is 2 - 3 oz Horween Natural Horsehide Chromexcel and the denim is a USA Chambray Swift 12 oz indigo raw denim. Thread is natural 4 ply from Royalwood. All of it his handmade except for the burnishing in which I used a cocobolo burnishing bit. Any critiques or recommendations for when I do more inlays in the future? I have some more denim, duck canvas and wool to try doing inlays with.
-
I'm very happy with my progress for starting leatherworking on May 1st. I'm still waiting for the arrival of the dremel cocobolo burnishers to clean up the edges a bit more.
