I'm getting into leather work and need several pieces of equipment as well as hand tools and punches. I'm interested in a hand-crank skiver, kick-press snapsetter (preferably double-head), bell-knife strap splitter, round knife, hole punch sets and end punch sets. Depending on price, might be interested in a large splitter, edge painter or other equipment. I'm located in SW Virginia and can pick up items in NC, SC, TN, WV, KY, OH, or PA if needed. Let me know if you have anything you would like to sell. Thanks!

Hello all, I just moved to the UK a few months ago and I want to know if you can recommend some leather suppliers where I can buy leather from. I ordered some leather from www.aacrack.co.uk, but maybe there are other places you order from. Maybe some tanneries around UK? Would be great if you can also recommend some places in London where I can actually go and see (and feel) the types of leather. Cheers, Stefan

Hello everyone, I am a beginner to leather working. I have done some hand sewing, but I am now considering buying a sewing machine, and I am looking for help knowing what to buy. I am hoping to keep the budget under $500, but I really don't know how much one needs to spend. I would prefer to spend less if that is possible. I was looking at walking foot sewing machines and thinking that would be a good idea, but you tell me if you think it's worth the upgrade. I am thinking of buying something used off of ebay or somewhere, but I wanted to ask the experts first. Thank you for your help! -Cole

Hi all! I have a customer from another part of the country that wants a holster for his Desert Eagle (.50 cal.) After looking in all the usual online sales stores for a dummy, cannot find one. They don't seem to carry them (not a popular pistol for holsters!) lol!!! Is there a member here that may have one for sale or I could rent it from for a couple days?? I would pay the shipping both directions & however much you want for rent (or trade time borrowed if you need one I have, I have 70 dummy guns). Let me know, this is a good customer I have done other work for and need to see this through for him. Looking on Amazon, there was a 3D printer toy "Rubber band gun" of a Desert Eagle that would be perfect but, its about 5 weeks away in Europe. ;-( Thanks for looking!! Hi, I'm hoping somebody here could answer some of my questions. I'm interested in learning how to work leather and making belts but I'm not sure what leather to buy. I know it should be in the neighbourhood of 8-10 oz (for belts) but I'm not sure what cut I should buy (double shoulder?). If somebody could recommend a cut that would be great. I'm probably going to buy from tandy this time and I would prefer un-dyed. I'm also wondering how belts (1.5") I can expect to cut from the piece I buy. Thanks!

So I'm new to this forum and I've done some searching and one post I've wish I've found but still seems to elude me is a post on leather sources. I'm relatively new to leatherworking and I'm making watch straps right now from various Horween hides purchased from Maverick Leather Company out of California. The quality of the leather is very good, while the price is relatively cheap (~$5 sqft) I'm in the mood to start trying leather from different sources and other tanneries other than Horween but am not able to approach most tanneries directly because of the small amounts I buy. Is there any other good leather dealers you guys would recommend?

I have purchased some Hermann Oak tooling leather recently from Springfield Leather Company, and I was very satisfied with it. Although, I found out that Hermann Oak (or at least the stuff that springfield supplies) is "grade c" quality. I was surprised, because the leather seemed to be higher quality (I am in no way knocking Hermann Oak or Springfield, both are great companies that I will probably continue to do business with). I have noticed that it is no easy task to find a leather supplier that supplies "grade A" leather in small quantities. I want the top grade stuff. Mainly for advertising purposes (that may sound stupid, but I have done research, and it does wonders for marketing). Does anyone know where I can purchase some Natural Grade A tooling sides/shoulders/etc.?? Thank you for your input Zayne

I have bought a couple of brass belt buckles from tandy, but 5 dollars a piece seems a little pricey. Also, I am curious about what type(s) of metal is best for use with leather? I dont want anything that will leave any residue or anything on the leather, or anything that will bend/break. Is there a good website that gives measurements and is of reasonable price? Thanks! Zayne

I am new to leatherworking. I bought a 6 oz side of discount Veg Tan from Tandy and a 4 oz Veg Tan shoulder. I have been working with them both, and while the shoulder quality doesnt seem too bad. The side could be better. The flesh side seems really uneven and full of long fibers. I don't know if thats a normal thing or not. I hear tandys leather isnt that great overall. I hear amazing things about horweens chromexcel, among others, but I'm assuming it is really expensive. I also have heard that springfeild has some decent leather. All in all, I want to buy some good quality leather without spending a ton of money for making belts, collars, wallets, key fobs, etc... What are some good suggestions? Thanks Zayne

You can just call me a gluten for punishment… I’m still trying to figure out the 441 machine I purchased a couple of week ago and I already looking at grabbing anther machine. The 441 was purchased with the intent of doing satchels, belts and thicker cases. For smaller items - wallets, passport covers, journal and note pad covers - given what I read here I think a different machine would be best. I have some ideas for a few canvas and leather items I’d like to try out. Would the 31-15 machine be ideal? I’m thinking thread weight would be 138 or smaller? Leather thickness probably not over 4-5 oz. I’ve come across a Singer 31-15 recently services, with table and new digital servo motor for $750. Is this a reasonable price? Do I need a speed reducer, or will the servo motor be sufficient? What do you think - money well spent? or keep looking? - Odin

Greetings yall! First of all I want to say that I'm sorry if I duplicate posts but I simply don't have time to read through all the forums. I'm wondering where is a good place to find quality leather for belts at a good price. I bought some scraps from Tandy (5 lbs of leather strips). Are these any good? I have been waiting for over 2 weeks and it's still not here. Is this typical of Tandy? I appreciate any advice.

Want to buy heavy duty Singer leather sewing machines. Cosmetics not important...I want a workhouse where I can tinker and learn. Intent is to make leather straps, no intricate designs or tooling, just stiching. Thanks!
