I'm in the market for a skiving machine and came across this old Fortuna. I've never used a bell skiver and realize that they are finicky and have a learning curve. That said, would this machine be a worthwhile purchase if it works properly or would I be better off buying a new Cowboy or other clone? I usually buy old machines but am just not sure if skivers are easily repaired or costly to do so. I appreciate any input.

Looking to thin out the heard a little bit (the shops getting a bit crowded and got some new toys to replace these). I've got the following machines: Landis 20, 3 in 1 with a 12" throat. The cutting wheel needs to be replaced, but otherwise looks in good condition. $250 American, 3 in 1 again with a 12" thoat, the cutting wheel looks like it could use a sharpen but other wise looks good. $250 Landis model 14, Handcrank Skiver. In great condition and up to this point have been using it regularly in the shop. $250

I've decided to sell my Dixon since I already have a larger Keystone splitter along with a Landis crank. This is a rare machine that is also great for doing lap skives. It was made in England and has the original blade in great condition (no nicks or warping). This is a pull through splitter and the depth is set by the knob on the bottom. I'm asking $500 firm and would prefer local pickup in here Chicago.

Got a good deal from an antique dealer on the much maligned Spittler Skiver. I stripped the old paint off and clear coated the castings. I ground out the old scrapes off the round ring with the index numbers, smoothd the inside handle surfaces and added a small coil spring over the original spring blade. After getting the blade back in shape I find it works remarkably better than I expected. The coil spring may not be the most elegant solution but for less than $3.00 the handles hold well and are adjustable within a skive.

Hi everyone. As practice, I was trying to hand skive 1.2-1.4mm leather in preparation for my project which calls for skiving about 1.0mm. I was using a Tandy Super Skiver and well, it sucked. No matter how delicate of a touch that I tried, my cuts were vastly uneven and it pretty much ripped and tore up the edges. Absolutely no uniformity in the cuts. I’m sure some operator fault is there. Skiving is a skill until itself especially with thinner leather. I have to ask; is there a better knife/tool to learn on like a very sharp, straight or slanted skiving knife or even a round knife? I don’t mind putting the time in to practice but if it’s a better knife choice thing, I would rather practice with that Any insights, tips or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks! William

First post asking for help. I am considering buying this machine mainly for it's ability to cut sole bend material. The seller who I trust, says the cutter seems to work as it's supposed to. On the chance that I decide to fully restore it. Are parts available? Pictures show the missing parts section. Mainly the skive knife and the hold down, I think? May be more missing, I do not know. Does anyone have a manual and or parts list? And or know if and where the parts may be available? Or should I just keep using my band saw? Thank you guys in advance for any help.

I'm preparing for a move to a city and my workshop is in need of downsizing - and the first piece to go is my beloved Fortuna Skiver! She was a pain in the beginning, until I realized it was operator error o_O, and then she worked like a charm. I've recently replaced the bell knife and have got two feeder barrels (one emory and one grooved metal for thicker leather. Comes with two sharpening rods for getting the burs off the inside of the knife after you sharpen it. I'm not sure how old it is, but it works really well and exactly as you'd expect from a well-made machine like this. I'm asking $1990. I'm located in East Texas and not unwilling to drive a few hours to deliver or meet someone for a handoff if that's convenient for you. If you have any questions, let me know! Do you think it's possible to use a hand-crank splitter as a skiver on edges? I imagine you could back up the piece after splitting a little... but then would be left with having to cut off the partially split part?... Though, not sure feeding it only a little is even possible since the skiving area is so minimal. I don't own one of these machines so I can't test it out... Leatherworkers with hand-crank splitters, what are your thoughts?

For sale in Continental USA only. This is a used Ellegi model SKS 8” wide Stationary/Straight Knife Splitter. Please take note that this is a 3 Phase Power machine. Can be converted over to be powered by a 110v motor by replacing motor. This machine I believe was imported by American Shoe Machinery Company. This machine is in excellent condition as well as the blade and feed roller. Splitter has forward and reverse switch. I have upgraded to a wider machine and selling this one. Manual/instructions included. Machine stands about 45” tall and is 18” x 18” on the base. I want to buy a skiver. I am using a safety beveller from Tandy and want something that is not disposable and holds its sharpness longer. Hobby Tools in Australia have this wood knife https://www.hobbytools.com.au/kirschen-carving-knive-with-long-wide-blade-skewed-edge/. Does anyone think it would be good for skiving? Has anyone used a ceramic blade? Sounds like they stay sharp longer but take a lot of effort to sharpen. Any thoughts welcome.

Couldn't resist buying this 'boat anchor' for the price of a piece of leather. Made probably in the 50's in former East Germany - Textima was an old brand of machinery, related to CLAES brand, part of VEB Textima Co. LW users helping with this project directly or indirectly: - @Constabulary - who did most of the work: all the mechanical restoration. @RockyAussie and @Trox - very helpful tips along the way. Also @CampbellRandall (Dan) - very helpful videos regarding skiving. Thanks a lot!! The machine was badly rusted as you can see in the pictures (in the left is an original photo from the ad, before restoration). Couldn't find any documentation, didn't know if it's complete, if we can find parts for it, or if this thing will work again. But definitely looked very robust and seemed it was worth restoring. It is a bit different from other modern skivers: all the active parts (bell knife, feed wheel, sharpening wheel) are moving together with a ratio established by the gears (feed wheel moves slower). They all start/stop moving when the clutch is engaged/disengaged by the pedal. Machine is ALL gear driven (no belts inside) and the original clutch was on the outside. Found out: the old, heavy, wide-belt external clutch needed to be replaced with an external clutch motor. Only one part was missing: the feed wheel drive-rod (and a cover). We ordered the missing rod but realized it was too short, so Constabulary adjusted this by cutting, gluing and pinning on a tube (photo). Machine needed to be stripped to the last screw, every single bit was taking care of. That included: electrolysis bath to break some parts loose, de-rusting, hammering some parts out, heating them with a torch etc. Many components were all gummed up. Original paint was very thick, pretty difficult to remove. Following was the painting and partial assembly, greasing, shipping. -
I’m a Newbie to This Arena And Want to Buy Some Tools That Will Last For Quite a While. I want to get a skiver/splitter. Have Heard Much About Osborne 84 And 86. I Also Recognize There Are Many Others Out There That Are Similar. I Don’t Mind Spending The Money to Get a New Osborne 84 But I’m Wondering if it Would be a Better Idea For me to Get an Vintage One And Get it Cleaned up or Even Another Brand /model. Any suggestions would be very grateful.

Hello, I need a skiving machine (bell skiver) for splitting wallets back, thinning pockets etc,. I need it so I can line a wallet, so I have to get it down to below 1mm. Here in Europe it seems common to do that. I would be using it for 2-3oz (1mm) goat, calf and veg-tan. Maximum 2mm thick. My question is do I need a dual speed set-up? In other words, a constant knife speed and a variable feed wheel speed. The price difference can be almost twice. I have heard some say that you need the blade running at high speeds, but I also need control. Any thoughts on this? Thanks! Adam

I am about to lose my mind. I recently purchased a cowboy bench splitter. The 800 model. It has been great as I've only been through the testing it out phase. I noticed it was slightly off one side to the other. (I've come to realize that my need for perfection should have lead me to obtaining a higher end model like the Osborne 84, but I digress) So for all intents and purposes.... this is what I have to work with. I attempted to even out the roller bar adjusting the nut on the opposite side of the handle. I seemed to have gotten it almost perfectly level with the blade. Here's my problem... it won't skive now!!!! It worked perfectly fine before I apparently jacked it up. So now my pieces are a bit closer to perfectly even, but the handle doesn't seem to have that little extra give at the end that allows for the skive. I have searched and searched and searched for info on this and have come up with nothing. I really hope someone out there can help me!☺️

Hi there. Thanks to the folks who helped me with when I posted a couple of years ago about getting my machine up and running. Alas, I never put the time and resources in to it so I am selling. I am parting with my old Fortuna Skiving Machine. It runs, but would probably need someone who knew what they were doing to get it up and working properly. I had a sewing machine repair person come by and service it. At the time, he said it needed new belting. I bought leather belting for it but never bothered to get him to come back, because I wanted to find someone who serviced skiving machines in particular. Anyway, it does not have an aspirator, but it is in good condition from what I can tell and includes a couple of extra presser feet. I am not an expert on this machine as I only really used one when I was in school and there was a tech on hand in the labs in case anything went awry. I had aspirations of having it up and running and making all sorts of things, but alas they have remained aspirations. My loss is your gain! I got a few PM's on top of replies to my old post in regards to suggestions on pricing. Hey guys, I've got a question regarding skiving machine sharpening. Usually this part didn't cause trouble until now. I simply can't get it sharp and the blade leaves these ridges which then also show on the surface if you bend the leather. How I'm sharpening: - First I move the blade into the required position (almost next to the foot) - After that I paint the bevel with a marker - Then I move the grinding wheel into position and grind until the bevel is nice and to the edge (the grinding wheel is almost new, so is the knife which I replaced not so long ago) Am I missing a step? This usually worked but for some reason it doesn't today. I did notice however that when i painted the bevel, if I sharpened it ''gently'' there were 3 depressions in the blade remained painted. Due to this I sharpened a bit harder and I think they flattened out. Here's a picture of leather I skived:

Hello! I just acquired an old skiver and noticed that the feed roller has a slight wobble as its rotating. I took it apart to find that the roller driving shaft seems to be a bit worn down (it's no longer circular). Could the reason be for the wobble? I've attached some pictures. Any advice would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks, Michelle
