Hello. This is going to be a matter of opinion as there are so many options here. So I'm making a bunch of wallets for everyone for Xmas and I'm curious as to what type of finish I should use or rather what you all would use for a wallet. I'll give some background. The leather I'm using is a veg tan Korba buffalo calf from buckleguy. I'm getting the leather pre dyed (black and another color). Likely I'll burnish the edges with tokonole and beeswax. I guess I'm looking for a decent sheen, the more "luxurious" the better I guess (whatever "luxurious" means to you). What do you guys like to use? What oils do you guys like? Neatsfoot? Mink? So my plan is to use an oil like mink or neatsfoot then finish with tan kote unless someone has a better idea. I think that will be the look and feel that I'm going for. If anyone has any ideas that will help or even just some helpful info on what Im planning to use that would be great. Or even if you have a better idea all together. I'm all ears. Thank you for your time

Having some trouble picking leathers for durability. Obviously a thick cowhide leather is going to be stronger than a thin calfskin, but, unless you're dealing with a thickness that isn't available in calfskin, that doesn't really come into it. For leather clothing, shoes, most bags, etc., the thickness required is available in both calf and cow. Like-for-like (similar thickness and similar tannage), which one is going to be more durable - calfskin, or mature cowhide. For scuffing/abrasion? Splitting? Stretching? Cracking? Thanks

Greetings from SF. I have a small leather studio in SF (www.markhanks.net) where I make leather bags and accessories for both women and men. My focus is on the Euro style of leather craft. I hope to be able to share/gain knowledge and sources with other folks on the site. I also offer lessons, make prototypes for other designers/entrepreneurs, and do small production runs. Here are some of my projects, including some clutches where I have used an inlay technique that I have been developing lately. Happy making!

Hi folks, Today I got crazy and decided to make an iPhone case with sew on tag (label). This meant to be a gift for my sister and she is a huge fan of Star Wars theme. Most icon character is Darth and I decided to make it with my new Amy Roke pricking irons in size 8 spi and Barbour thread 18/3 in natural colour. To be honest I should to choose 18/4 as it's looks much better with those irons. To find a picture, print it out, transfer it on the leather, punch through, saddle stitch, crease all the lines around and finish edges in aluminium colour took me almost 3 hours which is not bad at all. There is a pad on the inside cut from soft nappa skin. This will give more 3d look on the final item. So tomorrow need to prepare a case-pouch for the phone and to stitch this on top. P.S.: It's raining. Again. Aleks from London
