Hi I have some deer leather that was chrome tanned. But it is very soft not very stiff like veg tan. I want to make wallets out of the deer. Is there a way to stiffen the deer leather? Thanks Greg

It's a design from one of those Al Stohlman stencils, I'm not designing my own yet. It's 9oz leather. It just doesn't look right. I feel like I'm doing something wrong. I used to have an issue where I was tooling with the leather way too wet, so I stopped doing that and all my work looks improved, but I still feel like something is not "clicking"? Like I'm missing something about this. I have most of the Al Stohlman books including Figure Carving Finesse. Sometimes it's a bit overwhelming and confusing though, and most of all I wish I could see his work in real life, because I stare at the flat photos in the books and I wonder how deep the cuts are and such...and sometimes it's hard to make out what effect he's trying to teach? I feel like I need to see and touch to really understand, but that's not possible...I don't know any leatherworkers in my area either. I feel like maybe I'm striking too hard or cutting too deep? Beveling too deep? Using the wrong bevelers? Stohlman recommends certain specific bevelers for figure carving, but I don't have those exact ones (yet). I have these straight bevelers, B935 and the bigger/wider version of that one. Will it really look THAT much better if I use the triangle-shaped "figure bevelers" Stohlman says to use? Also I don't know what Stohlman means when he talks about using the modeling tool to "smooth and round off edges" of the beveling. Like, I see this ledge that occurs when you bevel, but I don't really understand how to make it round, when I try to use the modeling tool on it it just feels like I'm making the image less dynamic and pressing the edges down so they don't stand out as much. idk if that makes sense. Obviously the lines inside the animal (supposed to be muscle definition) is a hot mess. Also I suppose I should add some fur texture? So idk. Any and all advice and critique is welcomed. I kinda like how this turned out because I really like working with thick leather, it allows a lot of depth which is fun, but I still feel like I'm not understanding something about it.

Merry christmas! For Christmas I got this deer hide that my great grandpa shot and killed while hunting years ago. He never made anything out of it but my grandma (his daughter) wants me to do something with it if i can. Any ideas of something really cool i can make from it? All Ideas welcome!

All, I'm rather new to this hobby, so I apologize if this question is rather naive. I've been working with some basic kits and belt blanks that were all the standard veg-tanned leather. I'm working on my first custom design where I'm going to make a partial dash cover for my truck. Our family spends a lot of time hunting/fishing/etc and I thought about trying to use deer hide rather than the standard veg-tanned leather. Does deer hide stamp well in a similar manner as veg-tanned? How tough is it to work with? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

After a few prototypes and studies I finally finished a complete, full-sized mask. Not completely satisfied with how poorly eco-flo super sheene performed blocking the brown hi-lite color stain in the white areas despite having applied 5 coats. Next time I'll try resolene.

Does anybody have a favorite supplier for Deer and American Bison? The only place I've ever seen it is tandy, and I've only seen it in one color, there.

I had a coworker give me a buckskin side and all he wants in return is a pair of gloves or something made from the leather. I've found some instruction on a pattern and making gloves but most of them are using machines to stitch which I don't have. I am going to hand stitch a pair of them for him, but I have one glove cut out for practice. Yowza, what is the best way to mark the spacing for my stitching? It seems tougher than veg tanned leather to penetrate with my diamond awl, or maybe just because it is softer.

Here are a few shots of a recently completed guitar strap for a friend of mine. You probably can't guess what band he likes. It's about 4 oz veg tan with a deer lining, and a pick holder on back. I bought the deer hide on sale, and it was just crap when it arrived. The grain side was terribly wrinkly and looked like it had been dragged through a coal mine. I kept it anyway and ended up using the flesh side for this and other projects! Props for the deer idea to Colt Knight. This feels like buttah against skin!

Hi Everyone, I wanted to share some bark tan deer hides I have been working on. Tell me what you think! If you're interested in picking them up I have them for sale on my Etsy store (and more pictures too). And I hope it's OK I'm just showing a hide and not a made item. It took me a long time to figure out how to tan hides and now I am on to the task of learning how to make stuff out of them. Get them before I figure it out! Thanks, Dennis
