Acrylic Paint
dirtclod replied to rickeyfro's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
When i need to paint something i use the regular paint. I get mine from Wal Mart and they work fine. You need to add a couple of drops of water in because it's to thick to use right out of the bottle. -
Soft Water
dirtclod replied to yldbill's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
They put salt in a soft water don't they ? It might be salt from the water. I've doing leather work for over 20 years and i have never soaked a belt or anything else i was going to stamp. When ever i stamp a belt and most other thing i make i just spray them with water let dry a few minutes and go to work. Never have had a problem doing it that way. -
As somebody that has moved their shop 3 times. I would suggest keeping all of your tools togeather all of your thread togeather and so on. Oh use some big Sharpies to write on the boxes as far as whats in there. I would also load my tools towards the end of the move and be prepared to not be able to find everthing you need when you start back to work. Plus i will bet something disappers likely to never be found again. Have fun !!

Sheath Thread for my Machine
dirtclod replied to JTknives's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I had a American straight needle machine similar to yours. On it used the #6 Barbors linen and wax for a long time not sure on the twist of the thread. Then for a little while i used barbors #6 nylon thread and no wax. If you use the wax get some desil fuel and a brush it will clean the wax pretty good and you should have a wax stripper in the pot for the thread to run through. 7 or 8 cord is big thread bigger than you will want to use i belive. -
Thanks for all of the pictures. It's nice seeing what a person can expect to see at a show. Hopefully one of these days one will close enough for me to go to. Is their some way to show the rest of the pictures i don't have microsoft word.

Johanna i sell and send several things to Canada, Europe and the UK. Paypal is easiest way to get paid. If the customer wants to do a wire transfur be sure and check with your bank before you do it. The banks here charge $20.00 to do it. I have one customer in Canada that sends a International money order in USD . Like one of the other posters said the post office is the best way to send something out of the country. One customer in Canada told me that UPS charged a pretty high brokeage fee to deliver a package from the US. If you send a package with the post office by Express mail you get tracking and insurance. If you send it by Priority Mail you get insurance included in the shipping and you can buy more if you need it. I give my customers a choice on how they want it shipped but i make it clear that if they don't want insrance it's their baby if it gets lost. Of all of the packages i have sent out of the country one person said they didn't get it. It does cost more to send a envelope out of the US. Phone calls i have no ideal what the cost is. I hardly ever call anybody in the states 2 or 3 times a month is alot for me...LOL.

TK here's a link explaining it a lot better than i ever could. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raw_image_format

[ I use a Olympus E330 8mp. for most of my work but isn't made anymore. Myself i don't use raw but i hear some folks swear thats the only way to shoot. To me just like one brand is better than another. It boils down to personal choice and what your comfortable with. A good place to go look around is http://www.dpreview.com . They have every camera made listed i think. You can look discussion forms and find out quite a bit about what folks like and don't like plus ask questions. Right now i was going to buy a new camera i would look last years model. You take the camera off of your taxes because you use it for your business. They may not have all of the bells and whistle's as new latest and greatest but their generally alot cheaper. In 6 to 9 months you latest and greatest one is going be left in the dust anyway. Their just like computers in that way. If you buy a DSLR i would get a new faster lens after you learn to use it. The lens that come with the cameras are all right but their not very fast most of the time. I use a 14 to 54 mm 28 to 108 in a regular lens. The lens that i use opens up to F2.8 rather than F 3.5 or 4 like most of the kit lens. Being able to change the lens is PLUS in my book. Shooting with tripod you can use the timer if you don't want to push the button. I don't think these new cameras have a place to screw in remote cable but i may be wrong. But they do have a remote thing like for your TV that you can use to take a picture with. I'm not sure if you have a camera store close to where you live or not. Here where i live you have to go at least a 100 miles to a real store. So i buy online. The places i buy from are http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ http://www.adorama.com/ http://stores.shop.ebay.com/17th-Street-Photo__W0QQ_armrsZ1 and http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Cameta-Camera__W0QQ_armrsZ1 . I have never had any problem with any of these stores their quick to ship and just plain ole nice folks. Lighting i use a couple daylight CF bulbs in gooseneck lights i bought at a yard sale. My light box is a homemade one sort of like the ones that have been shown here. The one i have now is the third one i have built i think and they get bigger ever time. The one i have now is 36 in wide 22 in tall and 22 in deep and i'm going to make a bigger one.

The Uncyclopedia site is pretty neat. Today was the first time i ever been there.

He is pretty special. I bailed him out of jail ( the pound ) last December and we have been a team ever sense.

Don light blue is pretty dark as you have found out. The Tuqoures " really screwed the spelling up " the color of the rock they make rings and jewelry out of drys to a pretty nice light blue color. It's close to the color in the picture. After looking i can't find a picture of the piece i used it on.

My dog / helper Happy Man goes to the shop with me ever chance he gets. I couldn't find him the other day and he had climbed up in the racks where i keep my leather. He was setting there like he owned the world. Most of the time he goes under the table and sleeps.

Curbstrap2 that is one funny story. I can see that guy flying into the bank...LOL. When i had a shop in town. Two guys came in to look at some headstalls. I asked them what kind of horse they had. They huddled togeather and said they had a girl horse. I kept a straight face and went on explaing about the different types of headstalls. Thats the best story i have.
-
Breast collars and headstalls both are pain to get a good picture of. When i build my new box i think i will make it about 5 foot long and 4 to 5 foot tall. The two or three other boxes i have built always get to be to small 4 foot long by 20 inches tall and i want to take a picture of something that is bigger and bigger. On the new one i think i'll fix it to where i can lay a piece of pipe or pipes of something across it then i'll be able to hang a breast collar like it goes on a horse and hang a headstall instead of laying them flat. I think a person could use fishing line to hang them with and not have to clone out the line. The last one i made i used 1/2 inch plastic pipe and covered the side with some 1.00 a yard white lineing materal. On the new one i think i'll try a shower curtain like some one else did on theirs. For lights i am using 2 yard sale goose neck lamps with daylight florsent bulb's. I find that have to adjust the white balance on my camera when i use them. But the good thing now is you can take as many pictures as ya want and it doesn't cost anything but some time. Waddy you can go over to http://www.dpreview.com/ and click on disussion forms find the type of camera you have and find out quite a quite a few things. Most of the folks there are pretty helpfull.
-
Hi Waddy personally i think you will be money ahead to build a big light box for your saddles. I belive it will pay for it's self in a hurry plus you can use it for smaller things to. Take a look at this web site they have all kinds of tips for do it yourself things from making your own background to stuidos from mild to wild. http://www.diyphotography.net/node?page=1 . It's just like here folks sharing ideals and helping one another. Background colors i would just look at others web sites and see what looks the best to you and use what you like. Good luck and show us some pictures when you get it done if decide to build one.

Taurus Millenium PT145 PRO Holster
dirtclod replied to JoelR's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
JoleR your holster looks real nice you did a fine job on your sewing. But i would be carefull about cutting to far down in the belly espically in the flankie part like on the back side of the holster because it will streach real bad. Outside of that it looks like you have a fine deign on your holster. -
You can try using hair dryer like the other person said. I have used a hair dryer to dry things using a box. Cut a hole in the box the same size as the dryer snout and stick through. Put what ever you want to dry in the box close it up but not to tight and keep a eye on it so it doesn't over do it. It will get pretty hot in the box in a hurry. Oh yea everbody has screwed something up some time or the other. My worst was not wearing some gloves when i was dyeing a couple of handles and then picking up a piece that didn't need to be dyed. Yep it was start all over time. If you don't mess up once in awhile you aint doing nothing.

Pencil Case ~ Full Carve
dirtclod replied to Storm's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Storm you did a really nice job on the case. I bet you get some orders from other people wanting one to. -
I think i would try to make a pattern out of paper or poster board before i cut any leather. Hope you will post some pictures of your journey showing your progress and the finished saddle.
