Two Lady Bags I Made Last Month
Jazznow replied to olivier79's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Great bags! You have a developed a neat and slim design. Love both bags. Burnishing the edges of the straps was mentioned before. You could have made the edges of the main piece and the side piece come together better by wetting and folding the edge of the side piece before sewing. Jonathan -

Update: found an email by checking out at the store and wrote her. She replied very fast. Fr anyone who is interested too here are her answers: Canceling membership is possibl at anytime. Until you cancel there will be an monthly payment of 30€ (about 40-45$ I think). You have immediate access to all videos that are already updated. If you have questions on the lessons you can ask via an comment system or in a google+ group. I'm still interested in opinions of people who are members there anyway. -
Hi all At the top of the page is an advertisement for http://www.shoemakingcoursesonline.com Did anyone already register there? Would be nice to have some opinions about them and I would need some additional Informations before registering. I want to know if there is a possibility to ask if there is anything not explained well. An information about how to cancel subscription would be great too. The website doesn't even have a contact email so I'm wondering if this is just a way to pull money out of my pocket or not Happy new year everyone Jonathan

Time for another Pay It Forward?
Jazznow replied to TwinOaks's topic in Special Events, Contests and Classes
I would be in, if it's ok for everybody to pay international shipping (for me it would be ok). If not, we could start a new pif for European members or something like that. -
Hi arbalet, i saw your Show on Facebook in the shoemaking Group. I was the One asking what leather u used. It's so cool and Im impressed that it's your first shoe.

The description on the rectangular box means "leather on wood and carton, stamped, carved and modeled". I think there is a carved wood form underneath the leather to wich the wet leather is molded. For detail like that I would try thin belly leather veg tanned.

Stepping away from the Project is what Works for me too. Spend some time with other hobbies, family and friends or do whatever you want. I for example can clear my mind by playing at the pc, reading a good book or go shoe shopping (my gf hates that, lol) Jonathan

How Heavy is it, compared to the tandy Maul?

Hi all, I have this customer who ordered a belt a year ago. She wrote me a letter ordering three additional belts. She wants one that is creme colored. That was a bit vague for me so I called her and asked for more information what she imagined. What I got now is it should be creme, light cognac, milk coffee brown. What dye would you use to get a color like this. Saddle tan which I use normally for a light brown is to yellowish I think. Would a good amount of neatfood darken it enough or should I go with a dye? I can get fiebings dye quiet easily here in Germany, Eco flo takes a little longer to deliver. Angelus dyes are hard to get in Europe I think. Any suggestions welcome. Jonathan

Jazznow replied to Chavez's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
You can use Sprays like that, which are made for shoe Protection on all leather gear. Just make sure its an High Quality product, so you don't get spots or staining. -

Wow, very nice detail work -
Hi I'm from Germany and I'm afraid I have bad news for you. In Germany leathercraft isn't as popular as in the us so there are not as much stores. In addition, tools and stuff is quite expensive because much of the tools is imported. In Munich there is bear gallery by Rene berends he's got all the Tandy stuff plus some better tools, look at bear-gallery.de. Prices are a bit on the high side, when you have bigger orders, it's cheaper to order from Tandy in Britain or Spain. You can order by email. Best leather source I found so far is kobel leder. Small tannery in northern Germany, you can order by email too. Website is kobel-leder.de. There are a few others. Lederhaus.de and lederkram.de I forgot the website of another company. It's called bähr sattlerbedarf. Google for that and you'll get the right website. From all the above I don't know if they speak English, except for Rene berends from bear gallery who spent some year in the united states. You can try to contact the other in English as its common to learn it in school here. If you have any difficulties or need help in translating something, you can write me a pm, I will try to help ya. Hope you enjoy your stay in Germany. Some very nice folks around here and the beer is good too Jonathan

You can use spirit dyes on veg tanned leather but it's difficult because it tends to bleed, so you may want to stamp a paper towel first nd then the leather to get some of the dye off. Experiment on some scraps first.

Thanks for those tipps Does the edge remain flexible with the hardener?

Pretty much on the correct path you could try the dies of course, but if the leather you have is predyed and probably finished you should give acrylic paints a try.

Lol, I grew up in sh too, little village next to hamburg. Back to topic: any chance you write up a tutorial?

Very nice sona. Like it so much. Where are you from in Germany? I'm living next to Dortmund.

Hi Andy Looks like 2mm to me. Softness of the leather is a question of how much oil has been added in the tannery. The owner of the tannery where I buy my leather told me that they put more oil on half sides and whole sides, than on necks or backs. That makes the sides softer but less suitable for carving. Maybe you can just ask at the place where you buy your leather if they have some soft leather. Best Jonathan
