  1. Hi all This Post is to advertise a Facebook group for German leatherworkers, so if you dont mind i Continue in German.

  3. You could use a piece of thick veg tan as a filler that you shape with your skiving knife. He described ths in one of his case making books,I think vol 2.
  4. Very interesting. Do they sell for same price as normal vintage tools or are they cheaper. I'm asking because I'm looking for some extra tools at the moment. I want to let the kids on craft shows play with them and leatherscraps
  5. Hi tree Reaper, could you explain the details of this? Not sure what foam rubber is.... Thanks Jonathan
  6. Nice work. Think you did a great job on your first project.
  7. Ok, here is a challenge for everyone. What will I be able to do when my wrist is injured. I currently can only use my left untrained hand.

    1. LNLeather

Rest, read, and organize your computer files or those things you have wanted to do but didn't have the time.

and - as Cyber said take the time to heal... What did you do to hurt your wrist? Ligaments and tendons take longer to heal than muscles. don't push it too far too fast.

      Take it easy...

I have been in that predicament a couple of times. Usually a good head to head talk with the left hand gets it motivated to do whatever needs done. At least it has done so for my 68 years.

Nothing wrong with rest and healing, . . . but I am just too high strung to sit and wait, . . . gotta get "something" going.

      May God bless,

      Dwight

  10. Hi and welcome Have a Look at this thread on making your own stamps. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=10252 I started like you with very restricted budget. Only had small scraps to work with and only few tools. Practice with them and build up your tool collection slowly. You won't need a lot of stamping tools at the beginning. And most you can make yourself out of nails or bolts. Most important are one or two bevelers in different widths and a back grounding or matting tool. A swivel knife is hard to make yourself, so you should maybe buy one. There are used ones at eBay sometimes. If you wanna buy a new one, this is a point where I would advise you to not buy from Tandy. There is a seller on eBay who sells Japanese swivel knifes which are a little more expensive but very good (google for "goods, Japan, eBay, swivel knife"). Don't miss my Tandy knife. Maybe there's someone one the forum who has upgraded to a better swivel knife and you can get one cheap or for free. I would send you mine for free but shipping cost to the USA are high Check eBay for cheap tools. Old cobblers knifes are great for cutting leather and you'll find a bunch of stamping tools there (lucky you, I live in Germany, there you have no chance to find used stamps) I hope this helps. Have a great time with your leatherwork. Oh and one last thing: start making small stuff for yourself. Key fobs, cell phone case, stuff like that. You can ruin pieces since they are not big. It doesn't matter if they turn out ugly. And if they are good you can show them to all your friends and pose with them Best wishes Jonathan
  11. Dont know anything about sadlles but this Look very nice
  12. Very cool. Did you do the patching with machine too? Love the buckle. Jonathan
  13. I have to Show this to my gf. She like pink so much, lol. Did you color the leather yourself or bought it colored?
  14. Hey, It looks good to me. As long as you didn't expect a super clean product it's fine to use imperfect leather. Often you get that used and rugged look, which I like. Lether has got. Character and I like to pronounce it sometimes for example by positioning my cutting patterns in a way that a prominent scar is on the flap and not hidden at the back. Your leather looks very dry on the pictures. Maybe add a coat of neatfood or Leather conditioner. Bye Jonathan
  15. Thank you both. The dyeing process Is simple. The first layer is yellow which is applied with a rag. Apply generously. Than you ake a rag and roll or fold it very tight. Apply dark brown on it and tap the rag on newspaper so that not too much dye is on the rag. Then you just apply the dark brown by rubbing your still tightly folded rag in circular motions about the leather. By reducing the amount of dye you apply to the leather you have the yellow shimmering through the dark brown. You can get several different effects by applying more or other colors. Red with dark brown looks good too. Or yellow, saddle an, dark brown. Just experiment. After dyeing let dry and apply a 50/50 resolene water mix (two layers) or your finish of choice. Happy dyeing Jonathan
  16. Thanks domellison, I'm doing this as a hobby for 6 or 7 years now, but I'm usually only working on weekends and holidays because my day job is exhausting and I can only sit in front of the tv at the evenings, lol.
  17. I will keep you updated. I have sent some mails out tis morning and waiting for replies.
  18. No experience flying in the USA but n Germany. I had some stamping tools with me. Didn't take anything sharp or pointy with me because I wanted to avoid problems. Had to explain the security guys what the use of the tools is and everything was fine. Everything but the little screwdriver that is delivered with the interchangeable stitching wheels. They thought I could start to unscrew the plane ... ... ... Would have taken along time with that tiny thing, lol
