I'm not getting how Bernie guaged his width by cutting the INSIDE of the lace, but.... whatever

Yup. I've ordered good stuff there before, but larger sizes are limited colors - just like everywhere else! As long as I'm complaining, I'm still wondering why it's so tough to get 794 series needles in #23 too.

You're welcome for the pattern. Knowledge? That's a judgment call that will vary depending who you ask Still, you boys 'n' girls let me know if there's other "patterns" you would like to see. Sometimes I have one and my "knowledge" haven't realized people are wanting it, and sometimes I'm meaning to get something designed and might be able to move it up on the list.

Would this be good to use for a stamp
JLSleather replied to PalmieriLeather's topic in Leather Machinery
Oh, maybe should clarify.... that SAME die, with two belt slots added (for example) would be the SAME size, but perhaps 30% more pressure needed due to the increased CUTTING LENGTH. Two slots 1 1/2" long x 5/16" wide would add about 6" more cutting surface to a die the same "size",... so.. this is why I mention this in a question of "how big of a die...." -

JLSleather replied to PalmieriLeather's topic in Leather Machinery
Well, I know YOU know, and I know, but for others who DON"T know...... Different types of "cutting". (blanking, piercing, shearing, etc) but as a simplified rule.... the force required depends on the perimeter of the cut and the thickness of the material and of course how sharp or dull the knife (because it affects the area of the cut...). SO then, I've used this for these palm sized dies in 8 oz leather... got a length of cut of about 16-17". Think single mag pouch. I would think that spreading the force out across the die is more a consideration than the force involved. If you have a plate to cover it, I wouldn't worry about being able to blank out holsters for many autos. Now, a skirted western "bucket" could be an issue,... but that wouldn't' fit in there anyway. Wallets 'n' such, maybe you hit one end, move it over, hit the other end. -

Told ya Don't take up much room in the place neither. I got the bigger press out the shed, but this is nice for the smaller stuff. Quiet operation too. Now it WOULD be nice, think I might pick up the little 1-ton thingie... just to have one that you got the "feel" of the press.. more for snaps n such. -

That listing actually DOES say "burgundy", but maybe they post the wrong pic? That spool looks awful BROWN to me. Maybe I drop em a line and ask if that really the wrong pic?
-
SHOOT! I DID check on it.. and they DO have a "burgundy" and it IS purdy close to the shade I want... then realized it's only in #69! ###$@#%$! I give up.. I got some sort of some shade of brown that isn't drastically noticeable. Yeah, kinda glad they didn't have it... cuz Weaver really did irritate me purdy good... don't care to go back- ever.
-
Nope, no burgundy. 'Preciate the good try though

Who got it? In like a 207, or a 277?

Copying and copyright(ing) 'n' stuff
JLSleather replied to JLSleather's topic in Marketing and Advertising
All that said, my position on copying / appropriating others' content? IF you do something that ANYBODY can do, then don't be surprised when ANYBODY does. Man, tha's good stuff. I really should copyright that ... By the way, same issue but different subject... in the last week or maybe 2, I saw TWO videos (well, parts of em... I couldnt' stomach the whole thing) by TWO DIFFERENT people, each telling me that you can determine where your stitch lines go for your holster pattern by wrapping a piece of leather around the gun. Which is TRUE, you CAN. BUT, Jim Simmons let us all in on that simple point YEARS AGO (in this thread, dated 2009), and I have no doubt that's exactly where these two MUNKYS got the idea. Fair enough, it was clear Mr. Simmons INTENDED you to use that information he provided for free. Woulda been nice, then, if these jackals would have said... "Jim showed me that"... but... nope.- not a word... Incidentally, this is the same way I verify the correct size before I put HOURS in a custom belt for someone. 5.. 4.... 3... (tha's me, counting down to somebody copying that ). -
Copying and copyright(ing) 'n' stuff

Got an email yesterday from a guy wanting a project with quite a bit of time involvement, but wanting to know how to "keep costs down". Well, best way to have me charge you less is to ask me to do less (if I don't make something for you, its ABSOLUTELY FREE!) But, I don't even make those these days, and apparently some didn't get the memo (it's in the blog). So, what has that to do with "copying"? In the blog, I put a link to a google search for that project, so since I wasn't making them, a guy could just click the link and it would show you a google search for others of a similar type (maybe). Now, today I sent him that link. And since it was right there and I was curious, I clicked it myself. YIKES! Folks are LINING UP over at custommade.com to snatch any idea I ever had Now, here's the blog post ... https://www.jlsleather.com/coast-guard-charge-books/ And here's the link taken from that blog post for simplicity.... "...you can find many just by Google-ing “leather coast guard charge book”. ...' Click that and see about a JILLION people taking what I GUESS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE "copies" of what I did. Now, all fairness, I'm certainly not screaming COPYRIGHT or INFRINGEMENT since I certainly didn't design that Coast Guard Emblem, OR the ratings, or the rank. Or brown leather, or zipper construction or binders in general. But REALLY... that layout with the insignia, backed by the Coast Guard rating badge, ribboned with a scroll stating name and rating, and bordered by a nautical rope knot..... that was me. Now, ya maybe shouldn't have copied all that, even if I didn't register it (which wouldn't be enforceable anyway). But REALLY REALLY.... if you "have to" copy the idea.. was it REALLY REALLY REALLY necessary to do it POORLY?@! Some of this looks like it was done by a child ... Good thing I have a sense of humor, eh? By this afternoon, there will be 3 more people making exactly that (mostly badly), AND there will be 5 more signing up at custommade, where apparently you can sell things no matter how pathetic they are, AND there will be 7 copying the way I used that google search link in the blog post -
Inlay on this knife sheath
JLSleather replied to Rossr's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Yeah, that's what I thought to. But these days, they got machines that almost instantaneously "paint" cobra skin to look exactly like python skin, so.... With the shape of that blade, I mighta ran the safety strap THROUGH or BETWEEN the belt loop, make it tougher to contact the strap with the blade. Keepin' in mind, I'm not the sheath guy... -
BUT WAIT>. .. if you order in teh next 10 minutes, you ALSO git dis one (just pay added shipping/handling)... for those who are more single stack 9mm folk ... Mag_P938_P1.pdf It's labor day.. no point workin' harder than a guy needs to today. ETA: noting that this was "patterned" with a sig 938 mag, but will also fit micro9, lc9, and xr9 (and a lot of others) but NOT the Glock 43 or the S/W shield 9.

How to get your products to sell well
JLSleather replied to RockyAussie's topic in Marketing and Advertising
That 'genius" in S. Carolina trying to sell holsters with my designs and a fancy story about his design skills offers like a jillion year "warranty". Problem is, if he look ya in the face and lie about the design, then WHAT IS his "warranty" really worth?@! -
And you can see from these pics, that the shoulder does have some "shoulder wrinkles", but they don't span the entire width, and they aren't the type that make the leather unusable. Zooming in looks like that red line is about 26" mark, so I'm gonna say this piece is ... 7 feet? IF your leather isn't looking anything like the close-up, ask your retailer WHY NOT?@!

Was looking at some older attachments - my own - trying to find an old pic not found on the computer. Ran across this, posting just in case anybody forgot what great leather actually looks like. These days, there are 100's of retailers telling you and selling you stories about how great their stuff is. I guess we're supposed to take their word for it. Been going on long enough that many people think the stuff they've been getting REALLY IS great leather. And that's the reason for the post this morning -- just to point out that THIS is what great carving leather looks like. This is a "single bend"... started off as a "side" at the tannery, then the side has the belly removed (left side cut off) and the shoulder removed (bottom of bottom pic, by tape measure) leaving the butt. Pretty much ALL usable except where the clips were attached to stretch it (and somebody probably could use that too, I just dont). This is marked 20.3 feet, but that was with the shoulder on it. After cutting the "single shoulder" off, this measures 60" x 28", which math people will tell you is 11 1/2 sq ft. At $9.50/foot from Hermann Oak. So, this would be a $110 piece of great carving/forming leather. The holster pattern laying there give a fella pretty good idea how much we're talking about. No conclusions drawn here -- just pointing out that you may not be getting what you have been TOLD you are getting ... I just want people to see how it SUPPOSED TO LOOK. I dont believe I've ever seen a side of cow without some shoulder wrinkles.. right where the "bend" meets the shoudlers. But that shoulder has been cut off, so there SHOULDN"T BE ANY here....

Yeah, that's not a "direct drive" system... there's play in that shuttle/bobbin case area, which pretty sure is the "slap" you're hearing. Looks like the timing is fine... no issues there.
