Looking for pattern for FN holster?
JLSleather replied to unioncreek's topic in Patterns and Templates
In the interest of not necessarily about what Jeff likes, if you have a favorite video you actually learned something about holster making, let us know over here in this nuther thread . -
Seen a video on making holsters, or making holster patterns, you found helpful? One which showed something you haven't already heard (and heard, and heard)? Add a link here. Let's keep it to links - not embedded videos (that's an option when you add the link). Post a link, and maybe a line or two about what you gained from the video. If you see something in the list which already covers that topic, let's not double the same content. I don't care who did the video, or when -- only that it adds relevant information that isn't covered in a bunch of other places. Something unique. Could be yours or someone else's. By seeing what is covered, we should then know what is not covered, yes? Personally, I thought this one was worth seeing. There is nothing about making a pattern, but a guy who never made a holster could see how JUST from this one video. Excellent "how-to". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFsXw3gabqk

Looking for pattern for FN holster?
JLSleather replied to unioncreek's topic in Patterns and Templates
Well, I'm gonna go on agree that maybe we won't comment on quality Bottom line, though.. one guy says 3/4" offset, another guy say 5/8" offset, and otherwise just what was clearly stated in Stohlman's How to Make Holsters.- nothing to add, and yet they "added". But, it aint about what I think is good - -but rather about are people being shown. Since that one video has 17k views, I'm gonna take that as people might need some help! So, not really my responsibility, but it does seem there is something as yet to be said. -
And "additional" insurance up to $200 is $3.35

Looking for pattern for FN holster?

Actually, that do sound like me Still, I can only find one video on holster making that's actually of any real use (and I certainly have looked), and that was from Sam Andrews. To date, I hadn't made one BECAUSE I have no objection to referring people to his. But, Sam does a good job of showing HOW to make a holster (and it's instructional in that when the video is done, a guy actually could make a holster from what he watched). Sam started with his own pattern - meaning a guy would need either a pattern, or the ability to make one, to use that information. Fair enough. So, Sam has covered (very well) how to make a holster from scratch from a pattern. So the only ways left to add to that video ( and not simply copy for attention, thus NOT riding on Sam's coat tails) would be: supplying a pattern, or instructing on how to make their own pattern, or instruction on how to make a holster without a pattern. And that is the video I have not seen. -
Yet another blue gun supplier "bites the dust". $42 per gun, which aint bad - only $3 above "wholesale" at Rings. Then $10 shipping, meaning they're charging me $2.50 ot put it in a priority box. Then almost another $10 for "insurance". Wait.. what?@!#!??! Seriously people, you DO know that priority mail is ALREADY insured, right? They could just raise the price of the gun, and charge reasonable shipping charges, but I guess maybe they rank lower in a search by price? So, again... this is for YOUR benefit... you DO know that priority mail is ALREADY insured, right?

YIKES! Talk about re-inventing the wheel .. I'd count how many holsters over there (Facebook group Holster for Handguns) with my design (and not one shout out to Jeff) but I got stuff to gitter dun today Thought for the day... how many leather crafters use the same design / pattern before it's no longer "custom"? Credit to Aaron S for the elephant accent shoulder rig --- nice lookin' stutf there Aaron. -

Yeah, re-inventing is a nice word for piggy-backing on the efforts of others - and I try to leave that to the soft fellas But that video shows nothing. Matt was talking about making a holster from a pattern, and I was mentioning making a holster without a pattern and - correct me if I'm wrong - that video doesn't show either of those. That's the exact type of thing I like to avoid... lots of hype, lots of hashtags, but no actual info. I will go check the Fakebook thing - always like to give a guy benefit of doubt No matter, though -- this was a duplicate post, and somebody already offered the OP a fix... don't know if he took it or not. -

My [obvious] question is; Why are they made short (requiring adjustment of position from other feet)? -
Okay what the what .... got someone wants this design, and I know I've seen it before. Anybody know where? Book? Doodle page? Craftaid template?

Hydraulic shop press as a clicker press for cutting dies
JLSleather replied to Anubis78's topic in Leather Machinery
Well, there's the thing.. a shop press travels slowly enough you'd have to be trying pretty hard to "bottom out" with it. Still, it's a decent compromise even though slow. Still much faster than cutting everything with a knife, and far cheaper than a swing arm, so ... I don't have any "stops" on mine, nor do I have any issue with warping or burying dies .. I do replace a cutting surface occasionally, but you'll have that regardless. Harbor Freight has these currently for $150 (20 ton) - in my email this morning. Also a $54 drill press ...- 36 replies

No idea what you just said Anyway, I had AutoCad (at home) due to the old "job" -- allowed me to purchase the full version at an insane discount. When that finally expired .. well - you've seen teh sticker price there. I did try draftsight, but found it a bit quirky. Maybe the paid version is better? Currently using a combination of this 'n' that, but always looking for new options. Actually what I miss is -- dimensions in inches. I mean, you certainly can offset that curve by 'this many' pixels, but it tends to take some of the fun out of drawing! One guy on the forum once commented that he just scans the gun, and there you have it. When I asked how to do that, the answer was quite short Graph paper works great -- in the end, that's doing much of the work. Got real used to 1/4" grids. Wife really messed me up a bit .. she picked up more - only she got some with .200" squares... surprising how that can throw you off Hence the reason for the scale in my pictures! Far as free, though.. PrimoPDF seems to work pretty well. I used Acrobat Pro for way too long, but haven't been able to get myself to go 'subscription'. Only thing I can't do with the free one is combine pdf's or annotate, which these days I don't need anyway. But then, the whole point of this "show off" thread was displaying my graphic skills -
Hydraulic shop press as a clicker press for cutting dies
JLSleather replied to Anubis78's topic in Leather Machinery
tad less, yeah? just enough to set the die barely a smidge into the cutting board. If you use a bolt, say like a 16 thread pitch, then maybe make a mark on the bolt head with some nail polish, then you know that each full turn of the bolt will run it 1/16" deeper .. easy math ...- 36 replies

Correct all around. If you've seen my chicken-scratch video on airbrush poo, this is a Glock 43 holster with no lining and no "panel".. so you can tell about how high the front "pooches" with a slimline 9mm Impatient folks fast forward to about th 20 second mark ... And 80/20 is about what I 'figger', if you can call it 'figgerin'. See, now this is interesting. Programs? I'm not spending the money they want for AutoCad... but I do know some CAD.. if you know something that works, maybe we can swap notes? -

I haven't paid any attention at all to 'kits' in forever - maybe should check that out quick. Really is simple idea. Carry for self- or home-defense is harder if the gun don't come out -

Well, I can certainly say I've created more rejects than you. Wait... I mean....uhhhh... As a rule, leather should be done - start to finish - without wetting and re-wetting. But in the case you have here, I would think you're fine, since you don't need to "go back over" where you've been. Still, I would recommend doing your stamping with the moisture you need for proper stamping, and then go on form it -- without allowing it to dry out again and then wetting again. For this type of rig, the moisture in the leather for stamping is enough to do the forming also. Maybe take 3-4 short bits of thread, and tie it shut (through a few of the holes) overnight and let it dry that way. Then just put on a finish (if you are going to) tomorrow. Lookin good so far!- 12 replies

Yeah, the time saving goes up the more detailed the piece. For small dies, say less that 12" across, I don't think die life would be affected (mine works fine). Congratulations - maybe Soon as you open a "shop", you'll be assailed by people wanting to sell you everything from sharpening stones to lawn care- 36 replies
