  1. Yeah, it's all part of the "get somebody else to do it for me" attitude that envelops the entire country. Closely related to the "give me your money today and I'll get you something in 8 to 10 weeks" routine. Still haven't found what I want, though. I can get something that looks like it would work, but it would have to be cut down to even fit in the press, and I jsut want a slice - not the whole loaf Oh, note that we get that from "leather people" too.... hour long video "production" to answer a simple question..
  2. Note that sometimes just downsizing teh needle one size can help here ...
  3. I ended up re-routing the top thread a bit to use the poly thread. Not sure I entirely "get" what's going on in there, but it worked, so I'm good (ish). I could see that could become a pain switching back and forth one to the other. But I don't care for that little bobbin case thingie on these anyway... that little screw wouldn't take much to strip out, and it appears that assembly is about &80 (sold as a subassembly?), so not crazy about moving it back and forth regularly.
  4. Where are we getting a quality cutting surface for clicker dies? I've been getting by with cheap stuff... replacing pretty frequently. Today, I do a search, and it takes me to Tippman. So I guess I'll try that, and "add to cart", but - much like many sites - it won't let me see the shipping or expected time frame until after I "register" on the site. They talked themselves out of my business with that - I left. Here's the thing.. I"m just done 'signing up'. Signed up for something at tandy years ago, and still getting crap in the mail and email. Ordered once from cabela's.. got emails until I changed the email address. Went through all that at Weaver, just so they could send me some leather that .. well, let's just say that signing up at Weaver was a waste of time. Like so many others. Seriously.. I just want a cutting board to put under clicker dies that will last a bit without being an investment ...
  5. How are you routing teh top thread?
  6. Well, tha's one way. Other hand, if'n a fella already got the gun in question.. LOTS o holsters made without any pattern at all One day I simply MUST do a video about howta go bout that there..
  7. Anybody else notice a distinct change in tension between nylon and polyester thread? There seem to be some things that LW people like to leave unsaid. Without going into why that is, safe to say that I'm not one of 'em I have tried thread from several suppliers, in both nylon and polyester. And sewing with a piece of cobra, the tension settings need to be changed considerably, even for the same size thread. Now, if you're one of those who hopes to set the tension on a machine and leave it there until you or the machine dies, carry on and pay no attention here. If, on the other hand, you actually want to know how things work, and have found this issue yourself, what did you do about it?/ Worth noting, when I say "same size", I mean the same stated size designation - I haven't put a micrometer to it. I am talking about similar results regardless of the thread supplier, seems consistent between brands
  8. I like a rawhide mallet. But there is something to be said for a tool you are comfortable with. The 'answer' is the same as for that other question - "what is the best lure for walleyes?" It's the one you will use.
  9. Nearly 8 years later, I like a rawhide mallet. 11 oz is nice for tooling ...
  10. Well, nothing I can do about that .. That must be like international express mail or something like that. I've sent small packages to the EU for $10, and I've sent 16" boxes to NZ for $35, so .... something doesn't sound right.
  11. Isn't this drawing? http://www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/item-detail/40162/001/280
  12. That's the HO direct price ... We'd all like to know about that one
  13. Is it this one? http://www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/item-detail/40161/001/280 or this one? http://www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/item-detail/40162/001/280
  14. And I'll say it again -- MUCH money can be saved by getting together with a couple other leather folk and purchasing larger quantities for the price breaks. Lower pricing and far less shipping charges. But, I suppose helping the next guy has gone the way of customer service...
  15. I like W/C leather, and I like HO leather. I have never returned leather to either place. But, as with most places, W/C has "grades" - - I always ask for the best ("A" at HO, and "standard" at W/C). I did get a couple of sides once from W/C that caused me to make a phone call to comment - couple years ago. Did not return it, since the markings allowed me to cut smaller projects in clean leather (would not have been good for belts). And I have a couple of sides (W/C) I dug out the other day, where the shoulder / neck area is pretty rough. Don't know what I'll do with it. But the rest of the leather looks great, so not panicking about any of it. The leather in the picture is not something I would care to use. If you asked for "bargain" leather, then maybe that's okay. But if you paid for "premium", then I'd call W/C and see how they want to handle it. Personally, in addition to stating that I really like W/C leather, I will also say that their service has always been good. Can't say how they handle returns, cuz like I said I've never asked them to take any back. And I'm with NV ..
  16. The Fiebings "brown" has always had a 'reddish' tint. In the old days, we used to add a few drops of green (neutralize the red), but gotta sneak up on it - that green is strong stuff. So you ended up with brown.. and 3.899 oz of green you didn't know where to put Nowadays.. go wth the chocolate or walnut ...
  17. Not sure we're using the same terms. Maybe find something you can use here ..
  18. Now that is service. Keep raisin' that bar, Bob
  19. Nice job, Jason. Specially like teh wood grain look Wait.. is that walnut stain? Do you cut multiples, or is this a O.A.K. (oak).... Okay, think I'm done now. Seriously, this looks good!
  20. There are some pics on my site.. no point going on posting here. Before recommending books / sources, I would need to know what you want to make. Tooling? Embossing? Applique? Harness? ...
  21. Perhaps you are right. By that reasoning, I would be "out in left field"
  22. Looks pretty good.. cept that sucka's backards Don't know what you did, but I rather like that texture.
  23. Just one more "attaboy" for Bob Kovar. Talked to Bob by phone on Friday. Thread in my hand on Monday. And it was THE thread I asked for -- not "something" plus a speech about how he'll "make it right". For those old enough to have forgotten, or those young enough they've never seen it, THIS HERE is customer service -- send the customer what they asked for, at the advertised price, in a reasonable amount of time. Sending the wrong goods, or billing problems, or slow response.. an offer to "fix" the problem the supplier caused is not 'customer service' -- it's 'damage control'. I ordered thread, not a fancy pile of bull poo. And thread is what I received, so thanks again, Bob ...
  24. If you're unfamiliar with machines for leather, it's always good if you have a dealer near you -- where you can see it work, and get help with maintenance, 'n' such. Next best option, call Bob (in OH). I don't speak for him but he likely can get you fixed up. 866-362-7397 Next issue, do not concern yourself with making laughable posts. Nobody likely saying anything more dumber 'n' me, and even if you do -- given time i will remedy that
  25. I don't know nuthin' bout no chisels -- not my thing. But wait.. 4mm is the SPACING? That would equate to about .16", making that about 6 stitches per inch (for you American boys). 6/inch is about as fine as I would want to go on a holster or a belt (though it matters the size of thread). Most of what I do is about 5 - 5.5 per inch, I think. There used to be a british gal around here.. (english, UK, whatever they're calling that now) who stitched very nicely at like 11/inch.. by hand. No idea if she's still around, and in fact I'd have to ask somebody else teh name she used here. The finest I ever sewed was a mistake. I changed the stitch length on my Consew flatbed machine, without looking up. And that sucker ran across that material (2 layers of 1.5 oz) at 22 spi I had to put the glasses on to count 'em, but it did a nice job!
