  1. You may be familiar with the term "open grain"? Where you've cut it, the grain is more "open' (you exposed the lower layers more) - it's allowing easier penetration of the dye. All of which is nice info, but the question is what to do about it. Your dauber is one method. or, dye a wider piece, THEN cut the straps and the slots . OR, leave it in the dye longer, and it will "even out", and for this approach you may want to thin teh dye further so the end result is the lighter shade.
  2. They've been doing that for years. Your store should have been doing it also.
  3. I wasn't talking about anything nearly that fancy (though I imagine a sensor and a cuople of servo motors would do that). I just meant moving the DESIGN so that the "folds" of the flag were over the stitch lines
  4. Now the 'trick' is to adjust where the APPARENT contour in the flag is over the ACTUAL contour in the holster ...
  5. Call it Steve. Steve's a nice name. Sorry, too many pixar movies - seen "over the hedge"? I think you can call it whatever you like. If it's YOURS, you certainly have a legal right to "assume" ownership of any products and designs "Paul" used before. The only time I would think a "legal" name change would be called for is if you intend to seek any funding / investors , offering stock, etc.
  6. Oh.. I guess it would be a "B". Tough to find an "A" in shoulders.. guess they figure if you want the real nice stuff you'd order backs, or bends. This is from a place I've never ordered before - thought I'd check it out. Haven't carved it yet, but "feels" okay (though wit the usual 'fat marks' normal to shoulders).
  7. Pretty normal for dbl shdr, shown here. This is about 14 sq feet (ish). Fairly rectangular, minimal marks, pretty clean, and this is 7/8 oz leather. It's 60" wide, plenty for making belts and straps. On a 1 to 10 scale, I'd give this a '7' - since it's a pretty clean shoulder, but it's still a shoulder. I'll cut off teh top section, eliminating the hole and teh irregular edge. On teh bottom edge, not the 'wavey' shape. This is normal to dbl shdrs , and sometimes you'll see a 'V" notch taken out allowing teh leather to lay flat so you can get a straight cut on the edge -- likely you can do that and only "lose" an inch or so. This would allow you to cut straps from almost the entire piece. Smaller pieces would allow the use of the cut-offs as well. Oh, I wouldn't pay more than $100 for this piece, newbalance shoes not included.
  8. That might be a valid question for something with hours and hours of labor in it. For something simple as a holster, pitch it and replace it.
  9. I think Tandy stock dbl shld 4/5, 6/7, and 8/9, and may at times carry 9/10. 10 oz is pretty heavy, certainly makes a belt - but may find it's a bit heavy for suspenders. I think ALL the Tandy went to pricing by the piece instead of by the foot. You might get a slightly better price here 'n' there, but then you'd be paying shipping, so it all likely works out. Something to be said for seeing it before you buy. Look for a piece fairly rectangular, which will give you the least waste. Some go on (and on) about tandy not having anything worth getting, but this belt was made with a tandy dbl shdr.
  10. That does help. Used to just punch em in with my good hand, but not as young as I was.
  11. $80 for teh pair includes US shipping . Both cut cleanly. Second pic shows the MAG POUCHES they cut.
  12. Almost ready to get back to doin' these.. things went SO smooth 'back when'.. WHAT was I thinkin' when I said 'i do' ??@#! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnrO-Nj81n9aqWUuG_IKgvQ
  13. LOTS of posts about ALD, not a single pic of some of it. So, I'm a fan of both HO and W/C leathers, but also just ordered a couple different types from ALD -- tough to just go on taking someone's opinion without seeing it myself.

  15. Sheath look good. I don't groove. Needle maybe 1 size over. I like salad.
  16. Careful -- that's clearly useful information presented clearly and concisely. I use a short strip of 4 oz cowhide, but same idea
  17. LOTS of patterns available, say the last 60-70 years Certainly recommend you pick up "How to Make Holsters" -- largely revolvers, but there are some basic ideas in there you should look at. MOST of teh videos you see are somebody dragging out the SAME principles clearly laid out in that book - with some "everybody look at me" thrown in. Another source, check out Jim Simmons' GREAT article here on this site - one of the better explanations I've seen, well worth the read. 3/4 of the battle is starting with good leather - save a guy some headaches. The difference between the price of the GOOD stuff and the 'not' is very little. Some folks on this site think info is "worth more" the more you pay (or such is their claim), but there are some FREE holster patterns and info OVER HERE. If at the end, you have some desire to watch a video, I recommend either of these (and that's about all I would recommend personally). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFsXw3gabqk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWNKHi2joJE
  18. For those who want to add this to the list of links, that would be this guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LkpV1COuc8&feature=youtu.be
  19. Have at 'er - that's what they're for. Mix 'em, match 'em, use 'em as is, whatever. Share 'em with a buddy. Stew on 'em til ya git yer own idea. All the above. No extra charge for using 'em a second time, either. Ordinarily, there was a link in teh signature on this site to the patterns on that site. But with folks gittin' tax refunds, I thought it might be a good time to link y'all to Bob at Toledo (here and again below) so you can hit him up about leather stitchers 'n' such. Patterns 'n' discussions at http://www.jlsleather.com/diy/holster-patterns-diy/
  20. Been right there for just over EIGHT YEARS - still very well done and still valid (leather hasn't changed). Don't thank me, thank her.
  21. HA! '80/20' is a loose term, basically just means that they are NOT "50/50' equal pieces. There isn't an actual "calculation" involved. In fact, I got a message from one guy, said he carefully measured one of my free patterns that said "20° forward cant" but was actually EIGHTEEN degrees. Ohio -- when I'm done making mistakes, I'll let you know
  22. Well, I wasn't looking so much for ideas so much as hoping that all the people "skipping around in videos" might comment or review one they liked (and why). Idea is, instead of the standard self-promotion POOP which invades about everything we would instead end up with a list of quality information which might -- dare I say it -- save the next guy the trouble of so much "skipping around in videos"! FROM THE SITE: I would love to see a collection of useful leather working videos, and would gladly display it here. By ‘useful’, I mean there are enough ‘self promotion’ videos out there already, and requiring payment to view it does not make it “worth more”.
  23. Coming up on a year.
  24. Must have slowed down a bit - maybe need to upload something new? As of this morning, total of 127,748 free downloads. The winner? Glock 19 pancake style holster (6,024 downloads).
  25. ANother 6 months gone by, I see we're still watching Sam and those GIRLS in the Greg Allman video. Both good choices
