  1. Now I have read all 66 pages of sewing machine, all pages on sewing leather, and 25 pages under this forum page. I must be dense, alright I am dense, but. How do you lay out..say a belt blank, or rear girth strap for that matter, to get the "oval, or oval/diamond pattern" ?. It must be simple, it hasn't shown up in say... 100 postings? Thanks for the help, in advance Kevin PS. i have seen this called a boot stitch, or a "fancy belt" stitch and "gunfighter stitch".
  2. I received my CB 4500 early this month and could not be happier. I don't know anything about the cobras, but it looks like they are the same class and capability. Mine was set up and run before being shipped to me and still had a needle, wound bobbin and top thread, from test runs, then taken apart and shipped to me. The sample stitches were impressive and I overstitched them all to verify they sew on this machine. Much thicker than I intend to sew. After getting the machine I also talked with Bob, and he knows his singers and is helping me with my older 111w155 and 31-15, to reach their optimum operation. Ask him about your singer, but don't spend time learning that piece of Iron, just get the right machine and learn it. I have a singer 231 that also runs away and hides on me. A servo motor and/ gear reducer WILL help, but again why bother, just get the right machine, Now! Kevin
  3. I also like this thread. My last, current, shop apron I made from a Leather topcoat from Good Will... $5. Cut it up and resewed. It's ok, and i'll use that as a leather source again. But these patterns add to what I want here in my shop.! who else has an idea, like pockets and holders, they have and like or dislike?
  4. So Ed, did you go home with one?? I don't know about ED, but my 4500 came about a week ago. The video does not even touch how nice this machine is. That probably applies to all the 400, 450 4000 4500 etc.etc. Oh yea 441! But the service and info here on the right side of the rockies makes this a Great Buy. Fact is, I spent hundreds of hours researching and sewing on other machines to "save money". AND how many dollars for other needle systems, bobbins, feet?...you get the idea. How much money was all THAT time worth at a $$$??? per hour. The 4500 came ready to go with a needle and thread started. Put together by myself in about two hours. Plugged and started stitching. It does MORE than the video shows. I will never need another machine for my business, and in ten years (hopefully more) will sell for most of the price. Call Bob or Ryan!
  5. Why buy a machine? If you are "TOO BUSY" could it be your quality exceeds your price! Why not raise your price to match the demand and keep making the same quality product.???
  6. Thanks for the remarks. I will get rid of my 31-15, 251-3 and union special bg. Will keep 111w155, I just like it! BUT there is no comparing to a real, lets see 411, 4000, 4500, 4xxxxxxxx! OH 400. 450, ???????? A 16" arm and a 7/8" lift, like the real leather machines, cannot be beat. Save your soup can lids and get one! I called ryan at Neals saddlery and will not regret it
  7. Just arrived and assembled and sewing like crazy. (which is what my wife thinks of this). Went to goodwill and bought about ten pairs of defective jeans for $10. I've been cutting and sewing like a kid.(i am). Different needles and thread and stitch length and forward and,, OK you get the idea.!!! What a great machine AND super service from Ryan at Neals Saddlery. Set-up was a breeze with the pictures and instructions and a little common sense. Thats what I have, A LITTLE. It came with big thick sew-outs and I went over all of them again. It does sew really thick, and down to an old cotton shirt that was in the laundry. Why,... it's old? Now to sell a couple of old singers. Any takers????
  8. My shop apron came from Goodwill. Cannot beat the price. FREE! Ask you store to keep the old leather overcoats not good enough for the "front" of the store. In about two weeks I had five old leather coats. Cut off the sleeves and linings and such and keep cutting till it fits, then sew back together the way you want, with the former back now the front. Use the excess material for all the pockets you want.
  9. HEY newbie. Welcome to the forum. You will get great advice hear, just listen. Please read my post, one up from yours, about question like what about "xyz and a 1100-xxx by sazukijauketango" Take the advice and run to get the right machine, or save your pennies, boxtops and beer cans until you can. By the way I think my singer 31-15 and 2xx-xx and a union special and ?????? that I can sell you would be perfect for you to learn on. I get your money...and you get my experience. I think thats a fair trade, don't YOU?????
  10. If your talking about regular chunk of granite, i went two blocks away to a counter top shop, asked for some reject pieces of granite and around back was a great clean smooth edged piece 16x, wait I gota turn around and measure, yea its 16x22x 2 1/4". Maybe the difference is the thickness. Any way I asked how much and he said i'll give it to you and I..being of sound mind, took it and waddled to the car, fast. Try local monument makers too.
  11. You think it's... nice looking, you aught to use it. If you want to try it you have to come to my house. I couldn't be prouder, to own the very first BEARy maule. It came yesterday and I have been pounding leather for hours. Great touch and feel, it seems to know how deep I want to go! Before this I was a mallet guy, now no more. By the way Beary it actually weighs 18.06 on my scale. shame on you! Anybody want to buy say...4 or 5 mallets? Only used by a little old lady on Sunday?
  12. What are good sources for stainless steel ribbon for rope edges on belts, halters reigns, saddles etc? Want 1/8, 3/16 and 1/4".
  13. http://leatherworker...=1 Looks like just wrapping steel lace if you can find a supplier for the right size. Yes it is. Deb already gave me a pm and is helping with my project. what a great forum! Thanks for the help jack.
  14. ok! So I didn't listen to the good advice on this forum. I had to learn the hard way and spend way to much time ($) on machine, machine, and oh yea, another machine. Today I broke down and called Ryan, as I read I should do, say two years ago, and a mile of that little rope stuff ago. I AM GOOD at changing needles. Think I'll make a round knife, got enough metal . Started with a nice looking 31-15. Next came a 251-3. Whats one number off in sewing??? Then came a 111w or whatever. Still have. Works good for what it was made for, I guess. Now I have ordered this new thing with the round part on the right that goes around and around. It has a sharp thing that goes up and down, and a rope holder to feed through the little round hole the up and down thing makes in leather. Now maybe.....I can get down to making something useful, instead of 3/4" and 1" out of what started as 1 1/2" good leather. Well maybe? I'll let you know how the new thingamajig works in about 10 days. My fingers are crossed. I, uh, managed to sew them that way!
  15. I know i've seen the most fantastic rope edge belt in the world, on this forum sometime in the last two years. I cibitzed a lot before joining! Cannot find it now. Please send me in the right direction. I have a customer for something i do not know how to make. Nice problem. Get to do something new! I'll keep the first one, usually do. LOL
  16. ON E-BAY NOW "CHAMPION HARNESS STITCHER, HOOK AND AWL. pICK UP IN oREGON cITY OREGON, IF ANYBODY IS INTERESTED. sALE CLOSES 2/8/2011
  17. JUST A SUGGESTION (i'm bad about them) I've been all over this WONDERFUL site and it looks like a lot of newbies, like me, need a complete list of tools. I have seen cutters lists, machine lists, sewing pins, sewing machine pins, sharpening pins and more. Now. Where do I get my first swivel knife? What are the options? Bearings? Plain? Usable, satisfactory, good, great and absolute best? Blade choices and needs? Dollar ranges? Other basic tools from tandy to gomph to osbourne etc? Tandy wants me to pay $35 to $150 to "join the club". Worth it? Weaver wants an initial order of $250? I certainly have learned sooooo much on this site and look forward to actually knowing something someday! In the meantime what about that knife thing? .

  21. How do I get in touch with bliss barnes to get one of those "gomph" knives in a prior post?
  22. SIXTH AND MOST IMPORTANT. I'm not doing it. Also seems (LOL) tthe culprit is more the broken back caving in and that can easily be reinforced with more leather. Seventh: Thanks a lot for the input.(s)
  23. i HAVE AN OLD SINGER, ACTUALLY MY DAUGHTER HAS IT IN TX. OVER PHONE THE ONLY NUMBERS SHE CAN FIND ARE G911-5120. IS THIS ANYTHING?
  24. Thanks for the ideas. I think the saw blad cut down will give enough. Already anticipated the glue problem and IF I attempt, will be on "best efforts" basis. The customer understands the problem involved with the patient and it could die.LOL
  25. I've gotten in a bianchi model 120 Covert IWB that collapses. I intend to cut it open and insert a metal strap to reinforce and resew. What kind and weight of metal should I use and how to shape?
