  1. Excellent first post. The original pattern you found is wonderful! I would really like the high resolution file. I'll send you a pm.
  2. It does not have to be a free hand affair. I made this jig and it works really well. http://andersenleather.blogspot.dk/2015/05/round-knife-sharpening-jig.html?q=jig This is version 1. I am currently working on a much smaller and better version. It is hard to sharpen a knife free hand.. especially a round knife. Don't let anybody fool you. Simply reading some instructions will not even get you halfway there. It takes hours an hours of practice and if you are lucky you will end up with a knife that is relatively sharp. With a proper jig you will get the ideal edge so much faster.
  3. You're welcome No problem Thanks No problem. Glad you liked it. Regarding the closing of my sisters bag it is always nice to find new ways of doing things especially when it is original idea.
  4. You are missing something to scribe a line along the edge and a way to mark your stitching holes. Normally you would use a pricking iron or an overstitch wheel. An overstitch wheel does not cost much and normally 3 wheels is included with 3 different spi (stitches per inch). I bought this when I was a beginner and used it until I got a pricking iron. I have never used it since. Pricking irons are a bit more expensive and you need to know what spi you will be using. If I were to do it again I would buy a wing divider. I use a wing divider all the time. Mainly for scribing a line along the edge for the pricking iron but also to mark holes and such. It is a very useful tool. It can also be used as a pricking iron. You start by making two marks. You then lift one leg up and turn the divider 180º while the other leg is still on the leather and make a new mark. It will take some time but it will work. This way you can get a feel of what type of pricking iron you need. You could also find a fork and use this as a pricking iron. You don't need a mallet unless you have tools that needs to be punched. Also you don't need a cutting mat for dying. Just cover your normal cutting mat with waxpaper or a plastic bag .
  5. You did a great job. The briefcase looks awesome. Did you use the 3,5mm leather for the gusset as well?
  6. Yes the gusset is pretty forgiving but you learn something every time you make something. You are welcome.
  7. Unless you can find a tutorial with more pictures I claim the title of having made the most comprehensive briefcase tutorial ever. 530 pictures in total. All information about the briefcase can be found on my blog: http://andersenleather.blogspot.com/ Because of the number of pictures the tutorial is divided into several individual posts. Enjoy
  8. I also really look forward seeing the end result as well as the progress. I also looked at your blog but did not have time to go through everything. Very fun to see the old bags. Do you restore them for others and just for fun? What is the thickness of the leather? It seems that you use the same thickness for both the main parts as well as the gusset. If have never tried this because I was afraid the the gusset would be too stiff. From the last picture it looks good.
  9. It does both. When turning the bag inside out the stitching will be exposed if you don't have the welt. That being said depending on how thick your leather is and how close your stitching is it it can be left out. Thinner leather with high spi is better than thick leather with low spi.
  10. I think you miss the point. I made the signature 1 hour ago to make a point of how stupid they are.. And concerning the advertising.. what am I selling? Nothing.. And now we are at it. Do we really need all the information thats under peoples profile picture?. In the post right above mine the poster wrote 2 lines but the post itself could contain around 20 line due to all the information about interests, specialty and so on. My interest is to make this forum better and more easy to read. Many threads have multiple pages and all of that "dead space" just make it harder to go through fast. Sure you get use to it but that does not mean that things should stay the same forever.
  11. I think your pattern looks much better than the other one. Do you have a picture of the finished product?
  12. If your are able to sell it for 250-300$ you should do it. If people are willing to pay that amount then that's what is worth.
  13. Well that solves it then! Thank you!.. Now people just have to live with my very nice signature but that shouldn't be a problem.. they don't care anyway
  14. So you don't think this is just pure noise that serves no purpose? I would be somewhat okay with it if there were a limit in how high it could be..
  15. Would you consider removing the option of having an image in your signature? I find it very distracting when members have a huge image of their generic looking logo / company name in the signature. It is a thing of the past.. We don't live in the 90's or 00's anymore
  16. That is really nice. Be sure to tell us if it works out with the mando tip.
  17. Good looking edges, nice sewing, great overall finish. You did a very good job! You can buy some here ( not pricking irons though) : http://www.laederiet.dk/products/tools-for-leatherwork/blanchard/c-24/c-422
  18. I would stay that that way of dyeing the edge is very old fashioned. Try this instead http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=64853&view=&hl=&fromsearch=1
