Thanks Camano, your answers were very good. What length is the wide part. I am going to make it a two piece so knowing the length gives me the strap lengths as well. Seeing as it is aa gift I'll just go all out, suede backed with padding and the thumb loop. Oh does a 4" loop sound about right? Thanks

I want to make a leather rifle sling, as a surprise for a buddy. I've searched the Forum and have a pattern pretty much in my head, but have some questions. Think about these as if you were a gun owner, what do your customers prefer. 1.) If you take your sling off the weapon and open it up what does it measure tip to tip? Most of what I'm reading is 44" with the bottom strap adjustable for different rifles. Sound about right? 2.) The top wide section is about what in width and how long is it? 3.) Do you prefer a padded sling? 4.) How about backing.....suede to prevent slipping? 5.) The ends from what I see are 1" wide to accommodate the owners standard sling mounts.....right? 6.) I see some with the thumb or hand holder on the bottom of the wide portion. Is this preferred when carrying and how big is the loop? Looks to be a bout 4". Thanks in advance. Oh I don't know what rifle he has as there are many and his wife knows as much about his weapons as I do............Nothing.

I make a similar strap to the one in Brookwood videos. Basically I start with the hole to hole pin measurements and then work backwards. My min strap is 44"-47" depending on the customer. I add the other straps to give me the pin to pin with a 4" adjustment up or down 2" in either direction. Hope this helps.

I really like that. The stitching compliments the entire project. if I may ask what thread size are you using and how close is the stitch line to the edge? -
Did this for a customer. He wanted all black with a Sting Ray inlay for his girlfriend It's not really wide but that what she wanted. All and all, I'm really happy with it. Wow, I need a machine, that hand stitching is killing me.Thanks for looking. Oh, 6 oz drum dyed Herman Oak with a drum dyed 2/3 oz pigskin liner. used the same pigskin fro the gussets.

From the manual it does both stitches. You have been most helpful.

Th Thanks. 69 thread top and bottom, right? What size needle? This could become a nice wallet machine, or thin purses. Thanks for the direction.

Thank you for the reply. I have mounted them to a single strip of leather and sewed that to the body of the purse, something I wanted to avoid, but it came out very nice.

Boy I love this place. So much information and ideas being shared that it's min boggling.................... Oh well, I'll get some needles, thread and a few attachments and give it a go.

Just got this from my MIL. She did beautiful work in her day. Well I know it's not a leather machine, but it does sew leather, from the manual. The manual states 12 (80) and 18 (110) leather needles with no mention of thread size and or type. I'm assuming I need the walking foot attachment which I do not have. So, how do we get this to sew some stuff and how thick can I go? I'm sure it's not much maybe 3-5 oz or smaller. Got a line on an Industrial but need to raise the cash for that one. This one the price was great...FREE Just looking for some guidance on were to go sew I can start to sew. Maybe I can get this to work and with the Industrial have two machines. Thanks, Jon

Question Comparing Barry King Grooved Edger To Tandy's Edgers...
Bluesman replied to padparasha's topic in Leather Tools
Rons tools come with a sharpening rod. On a scale of 1-10 Tandy is 1, BK is an 7.5 and Ron is a 9.5. I have them all and use Rons. -
Handcuff Case
Bluesman replied to glockanator's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I would attack it as a molded case with a flap closure and a snap. Add a belt loop in the back. Take a look at the Zippo lighter cases on here. It would follow the same idea. Look here: http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=31729&hl= -
Great job. What are you going to use for the stuffing?

I am making a purse for a customer and have a bit of a dilemma In the picture you will see the parts. the purse body which has a stingray inlay, the two side gussets, shoulder straps and strap connectors. The purse is one piece and will fold over itself with the gussets stitched into each side. Here is my issue. i want to install two 3/4" diameter magnetic closures. But I am not sure how to do it without adding more sewing. The problem is that if I attach a leather strip inside with the magnets attached to each side I need to add an additional stitch line both front and back. The lining is already glues in place. i will be stitching the top portion of the purse, but a wider piece to incorporate the magnets will require a bottom stitch line. I feel it will be rather busy and detract from the subtle look of the purse. There are a bunch of creative folks here, let me know what your thoughts are. Thanks, Jon

Try hooking it backwards. When the strap button is on the neck, like an acoustic, reverse the strap. Or move the strap button to the neck heel. The white area below the neck.

Great job, l really like your finish. Is the pattern your design? You are going to have one excited customer.
