So I thought it might be fun to make myself a wallet with a kit from leathercrafttools.com. Here is a link so you can see what the finished wallet looks like... http://www.leathercrafttools.com/kits/wallet/m-long-wallet/list.jsp I received the kit and after contacting them, received some revised instructions that I think I can actually use now... This is the kit I got...I also got the optional pockets and gusset... http://www.leathercrafttools.com/shouhin.jsp?id=9141 Now I have to decide if I want to leave it plain, ala http://global.rakute...g/item/2170579/ ...or do I want to try tooling it? I'll probably hand sew it, though it looks like they used a machine on the pics on leathercrafttools website...I'd prefer to hand sew for the reasons I've (and others) stated in other threads. Stain it or leave it to darken naturally over time? Thoughts? Ideas?

Didn't you post in here the other day about that "pattern goldmine" you found on etsy and how you were getting to be "good friends" with the seller (LZpattern) on there? Could've SWORN I read that on here a couple of days ago...

What Is Your Favorite Way To Use Barge?
TXAG replied to LNLeather's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Seems like a small syringe would work well for fine lines and small amounts too. I have a wallet kit I will be assembling and will probably apply the barge's to it that way once I get started on it... -
Searched in the Play Store for fts timesheet and cannot find it...

I'm using gaffer's tape. I will try to use the putty tonight... I read not to use anything under Spanish ring knots, so didn't...but even tightened, they are also "squishy"... Rawhide would be good, but I wanted to get better at my knots first before I try to start doing more with rawhide...

So it turns out the herringbone interweave is a bit easier to understand for me now...after the first couple, a definite pattern emerged. I made another keychain...this time with a "long pineapple knot" w/ herringbone interweave (from Gail Hought's books). It came out nice, but -- one thing that has been bothering me is the finished weight of these. They are very, very light. I don't like that...I feel like they should have at least a bit of weight to them or something to make them feel more solid/well made. Right now, my knots are "squishy" (for lack of a better word) because I've been using tape for the groundwork. I bought some of the 2-part epoxy putty to try out...hoping that will give a little more weight to the finished item, but I haven't tried it yet. I've used the stuff before for other things...boy, that stuff smells bad! Any other ideas on how to make them a bit heavier? My knots are tight and do not have gaps or anything, but...really no weight to them at all.

Did you try searching for tobacco pouch in the search bar at the top of the screen? Because when I did, it pulled up a lot of threads... Can't help you, personally...that's one item I will never make.

Seasoned Leather Artisan Needed
TXAG replied to eobasiolu's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
For what it's worth, I had a legitimate request for this several years ago...I had an order for some ballistic nylon notebook covers, so I drew up the design, sewed the prototype to ensure proper fit for the notebooks, then I contacted a manufacturer for a quote to have them make them. If I made them myself (even though I did know how to do it), it would've taken way too long for me to make 100 of them by myself and I got a great price from the manufacturer. So...I understand why people would caution others about things like this...but there are sometimes legitimate, honest requests like this. I'd probably be very skeptical too if I hadn't been in the above situation and sought out quotes for my own project.- 10 replies

I did receive revised instructions from the folks at leathercrafttools.com...they are a little better. What really helped was the actual pics of the finished wallet. Can you send me your email address via PM please?

Do you have any of Gail Hought's books?
-
Thanks! I'm working on another one now that will be a little shorter...I just figured out how to do the interweave over the weekend. Made myself read one of Gail Hought's books until I got it. haha

Looks nice... I thought it was "Red Sox" though...

I think they call them rein knots because they're used to make fixed, non-movable knots on reins. I used to ride horses (a LONG time ago...seems like forever, to me)...and I had a set of reins with the same knots through them...

Has Anyone Found A European Stitching Clamp Under $150?
TXAG replied to DavidL's topic in Sewing Leather
I found it on Sheridan's site by searching for 'colt'...it's $80 and it doesn't say anything about them not having them anymore... -
I already did...right after I posted my reply above on the 29th. Waiting for their response.

PM sent to OP re: springfield leather...
-
Brian, I tried soaping this roo lace thoroughly, but all it did was make it slippery and still felt like cardboard. Also, as slowly as Springfield ships, I can order from my guy in Australia and have the lace here...sometimes faster than Springfield can even bother to get it into the mail. I won't be ordering from them anymore. Cuts out a big supplier, I know...but it's not worth the aggravation to me...

My local farmers' CoOp sells bundles of scrap leather for repairs of tack...might try somewhere like that. Hobby Lobby carries a very small selection of small pieces of leather, but it is very overpriced in my opinion.

I received my kit today. Instructions are completely unusable. They are in some kind of broken English and don't make any sense. (i.e. sew these two pieces together, but don't sew them to the wallet. Makes no sense at all.) I'm going to write to them, but have little hope of making this thing without usable instructions. Also, their "free gift" is a tiny, little valet tray, about 3" x 3"...nice, but pretty much unusable for anything.

You could always put the bench on top of some cinder blocks...

Yep...same way you split lace you cut yourself... I have some really crappy roo lace I bought from Springfield and one color is about twice as thick as the other I got from them, so I have to split it before I can braid it with the other stuff I got from them. There are several splitters to choose from, depending on your budget and all. I use an Osborne #86 lately and it works great. Some other tools combine a splitter with a cutter and beveler...those are pretty expensive, but are nice because you can do all three tasks with one tool.
